2017 Fall-Spring TV New/Returning Shows

Would someone please tell me about The Orville. Is it worth taking a chance on?

I watched one episode and was surprised I made it through the whole thing. Hmm...maybe I started fast-forwarding through the second half looking for something on screen that could maybe be of interest to me? But I'm not a fan of anything Seth MacFarlane has ever done. So maybe one of his fans could post something a little less critical of the show than myself.

I didn’t like it either. To me, it looked like a bad cross between the Jetsons and Star Trek and didn’t find anything in the storyline or the acting to make me stick around. Disclaimer: I’m also not a Seth MacFarlane fan.

Thanks for the input, everyone. I don't know if I'm a Seth McFarlane fan or not. I checked him out at IMDB and I haven't seen anything he has been in. I don't know if that means I'm not a fan or if it means I'm not a fan of the types of shows he appears in. Probably not much difference there. I like science fiction so maybe I will try it some evening.

Just saw your post. I've been watching Orville. They spoof on sci fi a little. I would classify it as light entertainment when you just don't want to take anything seriously.

ETA: Seth does a lot of lowbrow comedy but there are some definite inside jokes for sci fi fans.

@A.H.Black

I just said that Orville was cheesy fun but I just caught up on the last 2 episodes. He started poking at religion and social media / public opinion. It's added a bit of social commentary that the first few episodes didn't have.

In any case this last episode "Majority Rule" was really enjoyable. Anyone who has ever been on any social media will recognize the elements in this. Their rescue of the crewman in trouble was hilarious but very telling about us as a society IMO.

I will definitely keep watching to see if this trend continues and will be interested to see what he decides to poke next.

Halfway through season two of Stranger Things and it is better than season one!!! :cheer2:

That's next on my list of Netflix binging. Looking forward to it. :)

I finally took finished series two of Top of the Lake on Hulu released this past September, four years after series one starring Elisabeth Moss as a New Zealand-born Sydney detective. My review has some spoilers.

I’m in love with Jane Campion the director and series 1 is one of the greatest things ever created for the screen. However, shame I can’t say the same for series 2. It had a lot to say about rape culture, misogny, and exploitation of poor women of color, but none of the nuance, realism, or care that it had in series 1. By the end of it, I felt that I was missing important scenes between the two lead female characters because I felt some scenes and dialogue came out of no where and felt rushed or forced. The dialogue this time is very clunky and stilted compared to Series 1. Nicole Kidman was underutilized here in a way I found really surprising and her whole packaging here was alarmingly distracting and just made me question why. The worst part was that unlike series 1 where I deeply cared about what happened and about all of the characters from protagonist to supporting players to the antagonists, I failed to care about anyone in this series. Oddly enough, I felt the story flew by in a way where nothing seemed satisfactory, and I don’t mean the more open-ended conclusion. Series 1 felt complete and the characters, even the small ones, seemed to have satisfying arcs even if some were still left open-ended.

I don’t know how the Campion went so wrong with series 2 but she did. That said there were some bright spots and the actors do their best with the material which means when there are just quieter scenes between the actors it usually works. Often times the material gets in the way and nothing landed the way it should.

I do hope there’s a series 3 just so that the series can be redeemed.

In conclusion, if people love brilliant television and brilliant directing/acting, watch series 1. I’d only watch series 2 if you feel like you have to or if series 3 comes out and it’s much better than series 2.

Looks like we have our first network casualty of the season, and it's Kyra Sedwick's Ten Days in the Valley on ABC

I hate it when they do this, which is why I am reluctant to start watching new shows. But then I don't watch something and then regret it (i.e., Breaking Bad ..... I started watching the last 4 episodes because that's all everyone was talking about!; although I have since watched the series thru at least 5 times now, so there's that. :P).

It was only 10 freaking episodes, just run the damn series so the people who are watching it can finish it! But I did read they will run out the series .... in December and January. By the time it comes back on I won't even remember what's going on and wonder if I'll even remember to finish it ..... or care by that time.

I've been watching it because there is nothing else on (and I haven't even fallen asleep before 11!), but I won't miss it like I did some of the others that got cancelled after a few episodes. If I would have just been DVRing it, I probably wouldn't have watched any yet! I still have the last 4 of The Catch sitting there. Eh.........

9 pm - Frankie Drake Mysteries - CBC (Canada)

This new series from the creators of Murdoch Mysteries follows the adventures of a young female private investigator, set in the 40's I think.
