The Dance Hall 13: When You Dance on the Ice and Your Feet Twizzle Twice, That's Amore

All right. Just referring to my understanding of Michael's source based on this post.

I wouldn't be surprised if it ended up being true either way, just referring more to the insinuation above that Gr/Pa would be in some way penalized for Michael sharing that reaction.

Sounds like Gui/Fab are planning to stay in.

"Abbiamo deciso di non partecipare al Mondiale di fine marzo e iniziare subito il recupero per la prossima stagione agonistica, che inizierà a settembre." (We have decided not to participate in Worlds at the end of March and to begin immediately our recovery for the next competitive season, which begins in September.)

Because they relish the chance to show off their waltz chops, perhaps?

I’m shocked, they were the least likely to stay by my calculus. The judges won’t love them any more than they do now without a radical change in material. And even then, Marco is old and it’s showing. They could be passed by Z/K or LaLa as well as the Brits.

Please skategods, at least tell me the Litvaks are retiring!

Kind of a selfish decision to skip Worlds while intending to stay in for next season, given that Italy will drop to one spot but would almost certainly have two if G&F went to Worlds. They’ll be blocking the entire next generation of Italian ice dancers.

I’m not sure what they’re thinking — encouraged by their Euros result and 4th place at the Olympics? G&F were lucky that Euros was messy, and they were skating at home at the Olympics, which were also messy. I don’t think they’ll get their happy ending. How much lower do they want to be dropped? His twizzles are among the worst in the field at this point.

It’s disappointing when skaters need to be taken off the ice with a shovel. Someone please offer them a show contract.

I expect the judges will dump them even further next season if they really are serious about continuing. Some folks on X are speculating they really want that World title. Them sticking around in pursuit of a World title is about the only thing that would make me root for FBCiz to continue competing, just to deny GuigFab a World title they think they could win next season.

I hadn't even thought about how selfish it would be of them to take the 1 spot Italy will have & deprive the younger, developing teams, of that competitive opportunity.

Fabbri, Bates, and Poirier looked diminished this season, the exception being Poirier at the Olympics, down from the season before. The difference for me is that Bates and Poirier looked stiff and their body movement was impacted, but Fabbri remained physically freer, while his twizzles, a “will he/won’t he” proposition last season were a “he won’t” all season, aside from how they’ve had some lame programs. If a team is not getting the levels on twizzles and footwork, the only option is to milk the choreo elements until the cow is dry, because everyone at the top is getting L4’s on the lifts and the spin if they skate clean.

Having the potential to be the class of the field at the presentational aspects of waltzing, which they very well could be, is not much help with three/five elements being footwork and twizzles, if you’re not getting the levels.

If FB/C stay in, that snowball is going to be a puddle for everyone else. If they don’t or take next year/a few seasons off, and G/P and C/B don’t have the same idea of staying in to get that title, they’re (G/F) still vulnerable to Fear/Gibson, whether that’s for gold, bronze, or FORTH.

This is a Minister of Justice website article. Charlène and Marco are at all effects police agents and considered "State athletes", as they belong to "Le Fiamme Azzurre", the sport group of the Italian Penitentiary Police, which is a department of the Minister of Justice and which pays them a salary.

I'm quite sure they couldn't reveal there that they are going to retire, as that would make it quite official and they haven't made an official announcement yet.

I think you can all rest assured they will not deprive the younger generation of the competitive experience.

yes, it is an interview given to those who pay them a monthly salary.

"Well I will speak 'cause I am not totally agree [with partner Ambre]. I agree that both teams [Fournier Beaudry/Cizeron & Chock/Bates] are very good teams which I am inspired by. But, well, I don't know if that's diplomatic to say, but I think there are good teams and there are great teams and Guillaume [Cizeron] and his partners and [now with] Laurence are just great and greatness is not good." --Samuel Blanc Klaperman at the Junior Worlds Ice Dance press conference yesterday (timestamped link): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UdA9_LSuGqA&t=850s

I’m glad young Samuel can speak his mind, he’s certainly entitled to his opinion!

I like their skating. She reminds me a bit of Tanith. But French ice dance is quite a logjam so I guess it will be a while til we see them in major senior internationals.

I wasn’t a fan of their skating before and this isn’t helping matters lol.

Guignard and Fabbri really aren't reading the room...this is reminding me of Faiella & Scali 2011, except they had been on an upward trajectory before getting thrown off the cliff.

Faiella/Scali’s combined OD/FD score at 2010 Euros (in Tallinn!) was higher than Domnina/Shabalin’s, and after 2010, CD’s were dropped. While V/M and D/W won Worlds by huge margins, and teams would be fighting for bronze through 2013, there was no reason for F/S to not come back to try to win a Euros title. It wasn’t a slam dunk, because Pechalat/Bourzat were close, but Faiella’s back had other plans.

But won’t they be pissed off when G/F are beginning their recovery by going to the beach and getting well-needed PT and rest?

What was disturbing to me was the journalist's obvious objective (IMO) to stir the pot and try to push the junior dance medalists from U.S. and France into an adversarial position on this topic.

Before ever looking at this thread today: I had read the quick quotes transcript from the junior press conference, and b/c of the comments about the Olympics, I was waiting with extra interest for the video. (My thanks to Ice Skating International.)
To the credit of the six medalists, the overriding tone of the press conference was mutual respect and pride among all of them.

(I am not enamored of the French OGMs.
I do like eighteen-year-old Samuel [and Ambre]. My favorite juniors did not make the podium in Tallinn. My favorite medalists were the Ukrainians.)

I really like the Ukrainians too. Fingers crossed they can make a go of it in seniors. They've already been through so much.
I do as well. I surprised myself by crying after their FD. All they have been through and they are World Junior medalists. Huge congrats to them and Galina Churilova!

Also, pleas if you haven't watched Bielodonova and Kachur, I highly recommend them. They still live and train in Kyiv, and the power of them skating to 'Survivor' was very real for me They are survivors, and are fierce, and could've placed higher with different skating order. They are very young - she the youngest competitor in the dance event - and they made a new fan in me.
