U.S. Women [#8]: Meet Me in St. Louis

Has Lara Naki Gutmann written all over it

But excited to see if Sarah can express enough to do this justice

 Maybe the whole point of picking that character is that she’s not a normal human and has a strange affect. With an expressionless skater, it turns a liability into an asset!
Sarah replied in some SM comments that she has seen the movie and plans on portraying a different story with her program. So, basically, she just likes the music.

Thank goodness for that. The movie just made me very uncomfortable - and not in the deep social commentary way they probably intended it to. More in the "how are they handwaving pedophilia as feminism" type of way.

I haven't seen the movie and it sounds like I would also have similar issues with the content.

ETA - just read the plot synopsis on Wikipedia and whoa... Dark, twisted, and, yes, agree with your sentiments very much.

It looks like Randi Strong spent last week working on choreography with Alysa and then with Isabeau. Maybe we are going to see some very new programs from them in the next couple of weeks.

I remember there was discussion about Claire Seo be retired. She is on the start list for Philadelphia this weekend.

Claire Seo competed at collegiate Nationals and finished second overall (second in the short, third in the free skate) to Kendall Erne.

I've never been particularly drawn to Alysa's musicality or movement on ice, but I love this dancing from Alysa. I hope she was working with Randi Strong on skating choreography in addition to this dancing off the ice:

Emilia Nemirovsky skated lights out at her National Qualifying Series competition at the Dupage FSC Open Competition. She competed two clean programs and scored 195.87 which is the highest domestic score (junior or senior) thus far and it will be difficult to match or supersede. Unfortunately, she received no points for her last spin which, if it received a level four, would have put Emilia over 200 points. Emilia recently turned 15 in March and has landed clean 3As in practice. It will be interesting to see if she attempts it later on in the season in competition.

Jiaying Ellyse Johnson also skated incredibly at the same competition but in the junior division, scoring 182.38 overall with two clean programs. Jiaying is also 15 and I hope she can finally make her Junior Grand Prix debut after this stellar performance. She is coached by Bradie's former coach, Denise Myers.

@Karen-W This list doesn't include Philly results?
Yes, it does. I left off any skaters who competed this weekend but 1) have an Int'l Competition bye through the NQS to Sectionals or 2) did not earn the Sectionals CTES minimum for seniors.

The sound and sight of the drone during Isabeau's Red Bull photo shoot would have led me to splat:

Although this is cool, I'm really eager to know what her new music is. I guess we'll find out later this week. Even though it sounds like she was getting some new choreography in the last week or two, I'm assuming that she'll be doing at least one new program at Cranberry Cup.

We're still waiting on music reveals from others as well. Come on Alysa and Amber!

Amber already announced her award winning short program music

Madonna, like a prayer

And it’s rumored she’s keeping her free program

I knew that. We discussed it here. I didn't know she was keeping her long program. I would like to see something new. But at least we're rid of last year's short program music.

But, Alysa and Isabeau, we're waiting on you! I know that they were both working with a choreographer very recently, but I would think that they have their music selected.

I was thinking that Cinema Paradiso might be something that would work well for Isabeau. So, I'm happy to see this.

I was hoping she would keep her short program since she only competed with it a few times and I liked. I'll reserve judgement on "Zou Bisou Bisou," but I would not want to be a skater in her home rink having to listen to it all the time. I hope she uses the same dress designer she used for the "Breakfast at Tiffany's" costume.

I am kind of surprised that there is no mention of Randi Strong because Randi had a recent post indicating that she was working with Isabeau recently. I suppose it could be an exhibition?

At some point, I would like to see Isabeau branch out more with choreographers. Julia has done a good job, but I think that Isabeau could add more to her choreographic vocabulary working with others. But, maybe she feels like the Olympic season isn't the season to shake things up too much.

Could be they updated her programs but not her choreographers on that site.

That makes sense. She just finished touring Labor Day weekend, so she hasn't had that long of an off-season. And it's unlikely that she was spending time choreographing an exhibition program just before a competition. I'm kind of surprised she decided to do Cranberry Cup since it's so early, but it easier to travel there than most competitions.

Although USFS has vidoes of a bunch of the short programs up from Cranberry Cup, they have substituted muzak in most of them, including Isabeau's.

But, one notable thing about Isabeau's new short program is her jump choice.

We have talked before about Isabeau possibly doing a triple loop as her solo jump in the short program. That's exactly what she did today in her Cranberry Cup program. It was her only element with a negative grade of execution. Granted, it definitely wasn't Isabeau's best loop. She usually does them better and is likely to do better ones in future competitions, especially if she plays around with different entrances into that jump. But, I'm on the fence about whether it makes sense for her to keep the loop instead of the lutz. My biggest issue with it is that callers sometimes are unreasonably hard on the rotation calls for loops. (I'm not talking about today; that was definitely not fully rotated.) Should she go with higher base value with the lutz even though it's her ugliest jump and she may get edge and rotation calls?

I do love the Ina Bauer into double axel into falling leaf in the new short.

Here's a link (with the music change):

Here's Sonja's new short program. I love the footwork sequence, and the slide into the double axel makes it interesting:

It’s hard to tell how it works without the music, but it’s still a joy to see Levito perform.

I found a couple of videos with the music on Instagram:

The program is very new. (No costume yet. I think she used her shorts from her Fever exhibition along with a random red top.) But, it is promising. And despite how new it is, she doesn't seem as tentative as she usually is this early in the season, so that's a good sign.

I think this new short is cute and will be downright delightful come February. But it is extremely derivative of Moon River, and not in any way something that pushes her even a little. But I guess comfort is probably at the top of the list in things you want in an Olympic year, so here we are.

The “costume” didn’t necessarily bother me, but would have been more expected at just a random club summer competition. This is a CS event and she probably could have thrown on any kind of practice dress and it would have given a better overall impression. Or at the very least left off the biker gloves.

Regarding some of the junior women at Cranberry:

Annika Chao is really enjoyable to watch. I’m nuts about her forward camel when she changes to a bent leg attitude position but retains perfect layover posture. I must admit I think both of her programs this year don’t do her justice. She is not ready for a night at the ballet quite yet. More time in the ballet room needed. And the Moana program seems a bit juvenile for her. She is so regal. Needs programs that capitalize on that aspect of her presence.

Sophie JVF impressed! Can tell she has really worked on presentation and skating skills. More to do but good progress. Impressive triple axel and quad jumping. Some of the easier jumps a bit wonky still.

Kaya Tiernan did great to medal.

Sad for JE Johnson’s meltdown.

If you watch the archived full event stream of the ladies SP the original music is there.
