In Memoriam

Jonathan Joss, an actor who had a recurring role in Parks and Rec and who was also a voice actor on King of the Hill was killed by a neighbor in San Antonio. His husband is claiming the incident was a homophobic attack. He made a post about it, and if you read it, there's a trigger warning for animal abuse (on the neighbor's part). TMZ has videos of EMTs trying to resuscitate Mr. Joss, but I'm not going to post those links.

Rick Derringer, who had a hit with the McCoys (Hang on Sloopy) and then as a solo artist (Rock and Roll Hoochie Koo) has passed away. He also produced several albums for Weird Al Yankovic.
My Rick Derringer encounter. When I was dancing in NYC, I was in a rock n roll dance company for a while. Ballet rock. We booked the Limelight and when we got there, the stage manager told us that there would be an opening act for us. It was Rick Derringer. I was like “Derringer is opening for us, and not the other way around?” The manager said that he wasn’t well known anymore so yes, we were the headliner. Derringer was nice - he stuck around for our set. RIP.

I saw this post on the Skate Canada Facebook page. I never heard of David Gillivray. His post skating life was dedicated to pediatric medicine, per the post from SC.

May his memory be for a blessing.

Dr. David McGillivray had a very successful career as a paediatric emergency physician at the Montreal Children’s Hospital where he excelled in not only clinical care but also research, training and educational initiatives with the McGill Faculty of Medicine, winning multiple awards. A major accomplishment was taking the lead in creating the Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM) subspeciality at the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada.

On May 24 director Marcel Ophuls has died. He made some remarkable documentaries like Hotel Terminus, The Sorrow and the Pity, The Memory of Justice

How did he end up forgotten? (And yes, I read the article. But still).
Find me a music celebrity who had decades of drug addiction, a criminal record, no good new material for forty years, difficulty performing on stage, and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, who also remained a household name into his eighties, and I'll get back to you on that one.

I remember Sly Stone............I must be old. I do not recall a Sylvester musician though and thankfully it was not Sylvester the Cat who passed.

BBC Obituary:

From Randy Bachman on X:
"Oh gee...We say goodbye to Brian Wilson.
I’ve know the Beach boys since the mid 60’s and have done lots of shows with them. They were the American answer to the Beatles. They wowed everyone with the songs, structures, vocals harmonies. The sunshine sound. I remember when Brian decided to not go on the road anymore but continued to write incredible music. They were like family. When Carl passed it was like losing a brother and it feels the same today. They are still going today with their incredible legacy with Bruce Johnston and Mike Love. We lost one of the greatest composers and messengers who took jazz harmony, put it to a Chuck Berry beat and made a new genre of music. Some of the best singles in the world. Dennis, Carl and Brian are all together now. Other worlds to sing in."

My Brother has to be one of the biggest Beach Boys fans. He was in a band in High School (he graduated in 1965) and they played a lot of Beach Boy songs. He played guitar and was one of the lead singers -- had a great falsetto and could harmonize with anyone. He also played piano, mainly by ear. I don't remember the particular song, but the story was he just couldn't figure out one critical part, until he dreamed one night that he was on stage with the Beach Boys, performing that song. He woke up, went downstairs to the piano and could play the entire song.
