U.S. Men 2024-25 news & updates

@Karen-W I noted a couple small errors in the senior men table (and corrected a couple in my own by comparing to yours).
  • Jason's CS scores appear to be 0.8 of his lower GP score, but it should be 0.8* his GP average. Unless I'm misunderstanding the appendix. Doesn't make a big difference either way.
Thanks for catching that! I had the Same error with Aleksandr Fegan's CS scores. I agree with your interpretation of the appendix.
  • Ilia's CS average (listed as 562.59) looks like it's just the sum, not average
  • Jimmy's second CS should be 229.41 from Lombardia, rather than his 209.71 from Tallinn (unless there's some reason the Lombardia score wouldn't count?)
Fixed and fixed! Thanks for being another pair of eyes! Feel free to take the same eagle eye to the other three disciplines, lol.

I do admire his effort to do every jump quad at the GPF. But it resulted in a very messy skate. I don’t recall him underrotating so much in recent times. He looked pretty gassed from the start.

If he's going to be overly ambitious, I'd rather he do it for the GP Final than at Worlds. Also, I'm not convinced that going for all the quads was the reason for the underrotation issues. He was sluggish throughout the program and had issues even with the first quad. (I think the sluggishness is more obvious with this music because it is clear that he is not skating up to the power of the music.) I'm not at all worried. I'd rather see him peak at Worlds, which is months away. I don't want him overtraining or burning out.

And I think he has benefited from the tours and shows (as well as working with Shae Lynn and using music he likes more.) Two or three years ago, I was enjoying Ilia's jumping, but not much else about his skating. Now, I really look forward to seeing his programs. It's impressive that he has improved the rest of his skating so much.

This is another thing that I think will be a non-issue. Either he'll show up with his jumps and earn his place or he won't. I know people will point to him being held up in years past, but that's because we never had someone with any kind of record that matters. This year we have someone who was 3rd and 4th at his grand prix competitions. That's pretty much the best non-Ilia results we've had in a bit.

It's entirely possible that Jason is on the team, but I think it will matter more what his jumps look like and what Jacob Sanchez is going to attempt with regards to which worlds he wants to go to.

The SkateGods may smite me for saying this but... 6.5 weeks out from the Nats SP and exactly 7 weeks out from the FS... I think it's a 3-way race for the other 2 spots on the Worlds team between Torgy, Jason & Jacob with Jimmy as a long shot spoiler.

It says a lot about the (lack of) depth among the American men that Jacob's name is in the mix. I love Jacob's energy and am thrilled for him that he won the JGPF, but he won with triple axel issues in both programs and no quad. His presentation is good for a junior skater but would not be super impressive at a senior Worlds.

That being said, if Jacob skates really well and medals at senior Nationals and Jason is a disaster and finishes well off the medal stand, then I could see the case for sending Jacob.

I'm really hoping that Torgachev makes it an easy call to send him to Worlds.

Not a current competitor, but I noticed that the person who shot this video of Jason Brown skating on outdoor ice in Vilnius is none other than former '90's-00's Lithuanian skater Aidas Reklys:

Aidas Reklys coached in the Chicago area for 8 years so knew Jason from that time: https://www.skateuniversal.com/about-me/
Any idea when Jason was in Vilnius? He and Polina Edmunds tagged each other in their IG stories, but she made an IG post yesterday showing off a new skating dress for a show she performed at in Santa Rosa CA on Saturday, so I don't think the pics are from this past weekend.

Seems a bit strange to me that Jason pulled out of Golden Spin but made a trip to Europe somewhat recently, though not a show (the skating pics on his IG are clearly from a public skating session). I'm sure he knows his body & training needs better than any of us, but...

Mmmmhmmmm... Point is - he's healthy enough to fly to Vilnius for a show this week but wasn't prepared to compete a few days ago.
It shouldn't need explaining that a show requires entirely different preparation from a comp.

For all the hounding going on from the usual suspects, it didn't escape me that on your list Jason still has the third-highest average season score. If the others want to displace him from the national team, perhaps they should try scoring higher first.

For me I have no doubt that Jason is building himself into better form for Nationals. I seem to recall you all reporting his demise at Nationals last year, too, only to have that all blow back in your faces at Worlds.

Jacob Sanchez ingredients on a great Incentive about the Ice Skating!

^^^ Thanks for posting! Tatjana Flade asked Jacob in Grenoble on Dec. 8th about his goals for the rest of the season starting here (timestamped link): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Pi2RLyJgfM&t=340s
"I really want to improve the quality of my skating as best as I can. I want to expand my technical ability and I want to get the quad in, hopefully by the end of the season. It's looking pretty good but it's not ready for competition yet, but I'm trying to get it in for Senior Nationals." He's working on the quad flip right now (says quad flip & Lutz are easier for him than toe, Salchow or loop).

He also said he was working on the 4-axel and I can see in his technique in the 3-axel that the 4-axel is on the way!

He gets so much spring in his 3-axel. I love the way he just soars up (from the entrance edge). Sometimes it looks like he gets too much height for the triple, so adding another revolution should be the logical next step and it almost seems that his 4-axel will be even more stable than his 3-axel.

^WOW. Broussard is out for the season, I did not know that! :(

ETA - Sad that Yaroslav Paniot did not even qualify. He had promise but can't seem to deliver?

I watched Jacob's Jr. performances. Interesting that the tougher quads come easier for him and we might see one by nationals. He has the 'it' factor, so I would like to see him go far!

It looks like the US badly needs a strong wing man for Ilia. Is Jason going to do it again? :yikes:

Sorry. I am kind of re-entering the world of FS, and don't know a lot right now. Was Torgashev 2nd alternate to the GPF?
Yes. He got the bronze medal at one of the GPs. Undeniably talented but inconsistent, which could be the permanent label attached to most US men for the last 20 years.

^^^ Thanks, I've re-posted Lorenzo Elano's link in the USFS International Assignments thread where other skaters' GFM links were shared earlier in the season: https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...tional-assignments.111847/page-7#post-6707954
Lorenzo Elano (186.64) won the Junior FS (128.19) & silver medal in Nice, as well as a special trophy for the highest PCS (clip of him receiving the award :) is after his 4 photos):
A fan uploaded (from the Nice competition’s free livestream) Elano's 1st place Junior FS 2 months ago to Philip Glass' "Mad Rush" and music from The Hours (choreographed by Tommy Steenberg): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RYJMjH7bhQY

Earlier this month Elano landed his first 3A on one foot in practice (same day as his training mate, Alexa Gasparotto! :)):

Ilia’s gala skate at GPF was beautiful. Shows he can skate with nice posture, beautiful positions and flow. He even did a very nice layback spin at the end! Check it out!
Ilia also closed last week's Vail Ice Spectacular with this "No Time To Die" exhibition program that he debuted at GPF - see @YukiNieve's post #48 for a timestamped link (I also posted Amber's clip of her, Joe Klein, Camden & Ilia doing successive 3A outdoors in Vail): https://www.fsuniverse.net/forum/th...ows-benefits-tours.112107/page-2#post-6707733
Jason & Camden performed their short programs in the second half of the Vail show while Joe skated the 2nd half of his FS for his first number; all 3 men did EX programs for their other solo.
ETA - consecutive hitchkicks by Jordan Moeller, Amber, Camden & Ilia outdoors in Vail, originally shared/filmed by Sonja Hilmer via her Instagram: https://x.com/TheIliaSociety/status/1872303733725675828

Here's ISU's clip of Ilia backflipping over his buddy Jacob at the GPF gala rehearsal :D:

I recently came across this late November article on Emmanuel Savary by Lois Elfman:
“I have a different perspective, different outlook on the sport,” said Savary [...]. “The show skating that I’ve been doing over the past few years has really improved my performance ability. That’s the stronger part of my skating right now.”
“I have very long days,” said Savary, who lives and trains in Delaware. “I’m very excited to go to the U.S. Championships. I’m very proud of the work that I’ve put in and that I stuck with it. I’m skating for myself and I’m going there to do my best … I just want to do my best and finish out my career on something I can be proud of. The plan is to skate through the next Olympic cycle and keep enjoying the sport for as long as my body allows me to.”
Thank you @just tuned in for sharing Savary's performances at the Wissahickon (Philly suburb) Skating Club's winter show earlier this month! :)
