Belated reply to this Nov. 20 post:
I enjoyed getting a peek at David Shapiro working with Emmanuel -- thanks to mini-video shared by Viktor Pfeifer today.
ETA:
David Shapiro wrote on Instastory:
"Choreography is by himself @eman_savary and it's brilliant.
Super enjoying the opportunity to work with this artist, thank you 🫶 "
Emmanuel Savary choreographed his own FS this season to "Saturn" by Sleeping At Last and I was informed that it was created originally as an exhibition program. After Savary won Easterns he asked David Shapiro to assist him with the program for Nationals. :)

Just finished watching JGPF men. Over the moon for Jacob Sanchez ❤️❤️❤️ Been an uber for him since he was such a cute charismatic little guy. Now he’s a cute, charismatic young man! Congratulations! His skating is powerful and refined at the same time. Exciting future for him.

Love seeing so many of his family members in the audience in France too!

p.s. Is Jacob skating senior or junior this year at Nationals???

Okay, then... We finally have a very good idea of what the USFS ISU Championships Selection Pool will look like going into Nationals. Here are the Men competing Seniors who are age-eligible internationally.

Savary does not have the ISU CTES min for anything - it is possible the USFS could ask him if he wants to compete at Skate Helena the first week of January to try and attain them given his pretty decent Sectionals score.

Same music, different costume & jump layout.
It's amazing what a change of costume (and jump layout) can do! The program looked brand new to me. I would have sworn that he had a different program earlier in the season!

FYI - before anyone asks... the Selection document states that the 2nd GP/JGP and 2nd CS/Sr B/Jr Int'l column score is multiplied by .8 if the skater/team in question only has 1 event that fits that category.

This logic is applied to the following skaters in the GP/JGP category - Aleksandr Fegan, Tomoki Hiwatashi & Maxim Naumov.

It also applies to the following skaters in the CS/Sr B/Jr Int'l category - Patrick Blackwell, Lorenzo Elano, Goku Endo, Kirk Haugeto, Lucius Kazanecki, Joseph Klein, Ilia Malinin, Camden Pulkinen, & Michael Xie.

ETA -
Going into Nats, we're looking at the following skaters in the Selection Pool for ISU Championships -

Worlds & 4CCs -
Top 5 based on the tables above - Malinin, Sanchez, Brown, Torgashev, Hiwatashi
Top 5 at Nats - TBD
Top 10 at 2024 Worlds - Malinin, Brown
2022 Olympian - Brown
Top 24 current Sr WS - Malinin, Brown, Torgashev

Jr Worlds -
Top 5 based on the tables above (excluding jr-age eligible seniors who do not have Jr Worlds CTES mins) - Sanchez, Blackwell, Fegan, Elano, Kovar
Top 3 age-eligible Sr Nats - TBD
Top 3 age-eligible Jr Nats - TBD
Top 10 at 2024 Jr Worlds - Sanchez
Top 24 current Jr WS - Sanchez, Martynov, Broussard

Jared Sedlis is age-eligible for junior internationals.
Beck Strommer is not.

I didn't think he was but he's listed on the ISU's Jr Men CTES mins list, so I included him.

The ISU list seems to include the highest junior TES for each skater from the two applicable seasons (current and previous) -- regardless of the age of the skaters.
On the list for "junior men" are a number of skaters who no longer are age-eligible for junior internationals.
Among other examples: Edward Appleby GBR; Ze Ze Fang MAS; Alec Guinzborg CAN; Antonio Monaco USA.

One would think their website designer would be able to apply a basic filter to account for this... but, then, we've seen the updated/relaunched website this past month, lol.

Ilia has a feature with his picture in The NY Times online this morning. Great to see a U.S. figure skater getting some national press coverage. Amber and Chock & Bates wins were also mentioned.

I do admire his effort to do every jump quad at the GPF. But it resulted in a very messy skate. I don’t recall him underrotating so much in recent times. He looked pretty gassed from the start. And again, like the short, I didn’t like the new costume with the whickety-wack, skeleton back and black gloves. Both his new costumes look Russian overdone to me. But Mark said they were done by Hanyu’s Japanese designer. Well, I always thought Hanyu’s costumes were overdone too. What happened to lovely Japanese simplicity? I liked his previous flowy blouse/nude gloves costume better. Made the program seem less dark and heavy.

Will be interesting to see what jump layouts Ilia tries at Nationals and Worlds. And what costumes he shows up in. Like I said before, at least we get costumes from him 😁 He sure keeps it interesting.

Unless Brown shows up in fantastic shape at Nationals, he should be off the world team. I love his skating, but his falls on non-quad jumps are going to kill him in the short. He's really struggled this fall.
This is another thing that I think will be a non-issue. Either he'll show up with his jumps and earn his place or he won't. I know people will point to him being held up in years past, but that's because we never had someone with any kind of record that matters. This year we have someone who was 3rd and 4th at his grand prix competitions. That's pretty much the best non-Ilia results we've had in a bit.

It's entirely possible that Jason is on the team, but I think it will matter more what his jumps look like and what Jacob Sanchez is going to attempt with regards to which worlds he wants to go to.

Agreed - if Jason shows up with secure jumps, that probably gets him on the team.

I hope Sanchez's team takes any opportunity to go to Worlds that he can grab. That experience this year could be tremendously helpful to him next year. If he doesn't get Worlds, I hope he gets 4CC.

You expect the tech callers at Nationals to be as strict as the ISU tech panels have been all season? Based on history... Color me skeptical. :shuffle:

They won’t be, but if— and I say if reminding people that a lot can change between early-season and Nationals— he’s popping and massively under-rotating, there’s only so much PCS that can catch him back up.

Brown specifically said that by competing all Fall, we were seeing publicly where he was same-time the last couple of seasons, when it was behind the curtain. So we’ll see how he compares when he skates at Nationals. He does have more wear on his body each year. There are also three spots, without a solid-ish second like Zhou, so the competition is for two spots.

You expect the tech callers at Nationals to be as strict as the ISU tech panels have been all season? Based on history... Color me skeptical. :shuffle:
Of course they won't. They will see nary a rotation issue. But that doesn't mean his position is secure no matter what he does.

Placement at the GPs doesn't matter nearly as much as scores nowadays. While I do agree that Torgashev's results at his GPs are better than we've seen in awhile, his ISU Championships results in past seasons have been less encouraging. Torgy's current SB would have placed him 12th at Worlds last year (a Worlds without Rizzo, Grassl, & Aymoz - all of whom have higher current SBs). Going off current SBs, he'd wind up 14th at Worlds, which would screw the US for spots next season. However, his SB is within a point of the two guys immediately ahead of him on the SB list, so it's possible that a home Worlds score bump could get him up to 12th, which... That's a razor knife's edge of a line to be on with regard to spots for next season.

All this is a roundabout way of saying that I think Torgy has done enough and demonstrated some good consistency this fall season, which has probably assured him of a spot on the Worlds team as long as he isn't off the podium - same goes for Ilia (duh, lol) and Jason. The only skater who I think could displace Torgy from the Worlds team is Jimmy - and that would only be if Jimmy skated really well and wound up ahead of both Jason & Torgy.
Agreed - if Jason shows up with secure jumps, that probably gets him on the team.
Sure, but I don't have much confidence that he's going to show up with secure jumps. His 3A has been completely MIA this season and I call bullshit to his claim that we're seeing publicly this season what we didn't see last season.

Japan Open 2023 (FS only invitational comp) - 3A, 3A<<+REP - two-footed & couldn't complete a combo
Warsaw Cup 2023 SP - 3Aq fell out of the landing
Warsaw Cup 2023 FS - 3A+2T clean, doubled the planned 2nd 3A

Shanghai Trophy 2024 SP - 3A< F
Shanghai Trophy 2024 FS - 3A<
SCI 2024 SP - 3A< F
SCI 2024 FS - 3Aq F, 3A<+REP big lean on landing & couldn't complete a combo
NHK 2024 SP - 3A< fell out of landing
NHK 2024 FS - 2A, 1A

Last year, same time - he had 2 clean 3As per the protocols & video so, 50% success rate. This year - not one single 3A attempt has been clean. I know that by Worlds last year he at least was landing them clean, but he did fall on the 3A in the SP at Nats - which is the same success rate he had in fall 2023. Extrapolating the success rate he's had so far this fall to Nationals... 1 out of 6 would escape any call from a generous Nats panel, or 17% success rate, but the rest - stumbling out of the landings will garner at least a q - though they may escape any rotation call if he falls since the BV is already cut in half anyways.
Of course they won't. They will see nary a rotation issue. But that doesn't mean his position is secure no matter what he does.
Exactly.

Even going off of last year's generous Nats judging, he still only wound up in 2nd by 2 points ahead of Pulkinen, and 4 points ahead of Naumov - and a lot of folks here were making strong arguments that he was held up/gifted then. How much can the Nats judges hold him up if he loses 4 points in BV alone with a fall on the 3A in the FS on top of a fall on the 3A in the SP? Or no 3A attempts at all?

Every single man who made the FS at Worlds last year attempted the 3A and only the 24th place finisher in the SP fell on that particular element. Jason's SCI SP score would have had him 17th at Worlds last year (which is where Camden placed, coincidentally); his NHK SP score would have had him 20th at Worlds last year (one spot behind Adam, lol) - it's also the same place Jacob would land if we use his Tallinn Trophy SP score as a baseline for what he can reasonably expect PCS-wise as a debuting senior.

Best case scenario for Jason, if his jumps are in the same shape they have been this fall... Maybe he lands ONE clean 3A across 3 attempts in the SP & FS and he still manages to wind up on the podium because the rest of the guys have shat it up worse (entirely possible) - and if he's the pewter medalist - well, he better hope that Jacob is the silver or bronze medalist and is ONLY named to the Jr Worlds team.
I hope Sanchez's team takes any opportunity to go to Worlds that he can grab. That experience this year could be tremendously helpful to him next year. If he doesn't get Worlds, I hope he gets 4CC.
That won't happen. 4CCs is the week before Jr Worlds. It's more likely that Jacob would get the Jr Worlds-Worlds double assignment if anything - and that is absolutely a possibility - USFS did it with Ilia in 2022, there's no reason why they couldn't/wouldn't do it again with Jacob - he's helped himself tremendously with the JGPF gold this weekend.

My main point is that Andrew has shown consistency in his competitions and his scores did go up some after getting a gp medal sooooo lol

I don't think Torgy has some automatic spot or anything, but I think when faced with propping up someone who has a questionable 3a (and maybe other jumps idk) vs someone who has one decent quad, an ok axel, and did well in the grand prix (especially if he skates nats like his gps- not completely clean but good enough) then it's a pretty easy answer as to which should be chosen. Of course with 3 spots they can both be on the team haha but I also think Jacob has shown he's going to be in the picture too.

Right, and I'm not really disagreeing with you. If the Torgy we saw on the GP shows up, he's on the team, no doubt in my mind at all - unless some very, very strange, unexpected turn of events occurs and suddenly all (or at least several) of the US men who are capable, on their best day of one decent quad & an okay 3A, go clean. But, I think there's a better chance of pigs flying than that happening, lol.

The SkateGods may smite me for saying this but... 6.5 weeks out from the Nats SP and exactly 7 weeks out from the FS... I think it's a 3-way race for the other 2 spots on the Worlds team between Torgy, Jason & Jacob with Jimmy as a long shot spoiler.

@Karen-W I noted a couple small errors in the senior men table (and corrected a couple in my own by comparing to yours).
  • Jason's CS scores appear to be 0.8 of his lower GP score, but it should be 0.8* his GP average. Unless I'm misunderstanding the appendix. Doesn't make a big difference either way.
  • Ilia's CS average (listed as 562.59) looks like it's just the sum, not average
  • Jimmy's second CS should be 229.41 from Lombardia, rather than his 209.71 from Tallinn (unless there's some reason the Lombardia score wouldn't count?)
