it's also very popular right now in my set because it was in the newest Beetlejuice movie lol

Pretty sure her team wouldn't have known that this past spring/summer when selecting her program though. But if she's gets bonus points from the Beetlejuice goths too... 👍

I hope she can develop more power in her stroking and along with it, more speed. However, balancing skating and school at a quarter-based school like UCLA is challenging. I have no idea where she's living, but I'm guessing she either has quite a hike to UCLA or quite a hike to skating. There were arenas in Santa Monica and Culver City when I lived there...but they're long gone.

I believe she's training in Lakewood, same rink where Starr Andrews & Goku Endo train.

From Phil Hersh's article: https://www.nbcsports.com/olympics/news/alysa-liu-figure-skating-comeback
The process got more complicated once she returned to UCLA in late September. Liu, a psychology major, has three classes this quarter.
She trains at Lakewood Ice, a 30-mile trip down the notoriously congested Los Angeles area freeways. DiGuglielmo or Scali will try to get there from the Bay Area as often as possible, with Lakewood-based Amy Evidente and Ivan Dinev handling her coaching on other days.
Liu will also go back to the Bay Area as often as possible, starting with most of the five-week stretch that includes Budapest and her two scheduled Grand Prix appearances, Skate Canada and NHK Trophy.

I had no idea there was even a town in LA County named Lakewood. Pretty embarrassing after living there for so long...but a helluva unpleasant drive from UCLA. It would make a fine episode of "The Californians." (I took Hilgard to Wilshire and then onto the 405...)

I wish she could train full time with Scali he did wonders with her skating when Alysa was with him and Jeremy.

Alysa is doing an amazing job. Sometimes it is good to keep yourself busy. Motivated people like Alysa needs to be constantly busy. That's what drive them to be successful. With school and training together, it will definitely keep her very motivated. Her coaching situation is fine the way it is. She did amazing in her programs this weekend. She just needs to work on her stamina and get those triple triple rotated and she is good to go. Two weeks until Skate Canada might be too soon to fix the underrotation issue, maybe she can go for an easier layout of her jumps. She will score higher with an easier layout with higher GOE than the harder combos with negative GOE and underrotations.

Alysa and her coaches are the ones who can decide what she "needs" to do. Maybe she has the jumps in that order because that's what she feels most comfortable and confident doing. I'm sure she and her coaches are well aware that there are other options.

It also helps distract from/compartmentalize her skating as well as her nerves. She doesn't have time to perseverate. It's probably very similar to how Nathan Chen functioned.

Thanks for sharing Alysa's SP to Promise at the Budapest Trophy. I also found it on YouTube! :cheer2:

Geez, from the discussion here I thought it was an appalling version of MacArthur Park that Alysa was skating to. This is a classic version, by someone with a tremendous voice. Would it make the haterz happier if she skated to this?

I’ve seen Laufey share Alysa’s SP on multiple social media platforms since yesterday. I think it’s a great music choice for Alysa anyway, but getting the attention of Laufey’s massive following of younger fans is definitely a potential added bonus.
I’d never heard of the singer but looked her up. I like her music. Yet again skating expands my playlists….

"They" being?
The US Justice department??

"China targeted U.S. Olympic figure skater Alysa Liu and her father in a spy operation that entailed surveillance and efforts to procure personal information, the Justice Department alleges."

'Authorities believe Ziburis also conducted surveillance near the Lius’ residence and his place of work. He was arrested Tuesday and released on a $500,000 bond, per the outlet. He has been charged with conspiring to act as an agent of the Chinese government and conspiring to commit interstate harassment and criminal use of a means of identification.'

But let's just blame Dad because it fits the FSU "we know better than the parents, coaches or skaters" thinking LOL

There is probably one piece of music in the world that FSU likes... as soon as we find it every skater will be required to skate all programs to it and in the one costume that meets the universal approval standards.

Love Alysa's approach to life and skating, and her FS dress is fabulous.

Yes I know (there was a separate GSD thread here on FSU back in March 2022 when the news broke before Worlds); I just wanted to be sure that’s what you meant.

Almost anything other than possibly the original Richard Harris recording would be an improvement, so yes. :p

I will never hear any version of MacArthur Park without recalling what Dave Barry wrote about it. I will refrain from repeating it here, so the rest of you won't have it in your heads for the rest of the season as well.

I will only say that if Alysa can skate to that every day without cracking up about the cake in tbe rain and the flowing icing, she's stronger than I am.

How could the man who wrote Wichita Lineman write MacArthur Park? It's a moody teenage breakup song -- perfect for skating!

Interview with Suzy Horton, Jimmy Webb's high school girlfriend -- the breakup that inspired the song.
