US Ice Dance 2024-25 News & Updates

We don't really know what she knows or doesn't know. This is all speculation. But I think they feel the need to keep talking about their financial needs in general (one of which has to do with costumes) because when they do, more people donate to the GoFundMe, and that helps.

Well, if that's the case then Oona probably needs to stay off the internet. Maybe it's hard to avoid if people don't have any boundaries or sense and make rude comments on their social media posts, but those are the people you just block and disengage with.

Whether or not Oona stays off the internet or not doesn't change the fact that no one needs to be rude about her body shape.

I don't think it's ok to just be like "well people are going to be mean" why shouldn't we expect people to be better??

I'm not saying we shouldn't but isn't that what people often say to skaters or skater parents who come here and then get upset over negative comments they see? I realize that coming to FSU is different than just interacting on your own social media but we don't know WHY she made the comment other than to, again, ask for more donations to their GoFundMe.

Additionally, is there an implication in her comment about needing more $$ to get better costumes that they would be getting higher scores if they had different costumes? I realize that there were a lot of comments over the years about Madi Hubbell's costumes not always being the most flattering and that maybe she needed to find/pay for a more skillful designer to create her costumes but unflattering costumes didn't stop HubDon from climbing to the top tier of US ice dance teams pretty quickly - won a GP medal their third season together, won a watered down Olympic-season 4CCs the same season, 10th in their Worlds debut in 2015.

The jury is still out on the Browns and how far they can go in the senior ranks - there's a backlog of teams ahead of them both domestically and internationally that may prevent them from having a major breakthrough with a GP medal this season or winning a watered-down Olympic-season 4CCs next year, but if it doesn't happen it won't be because of their costumes.

I don't have a problem with them creating a GoFundMe and promoting it once a season - and I'm not sure they've done more than that - but there's a line here they're treading that may cross over into what some could perceive to be begging and excuse-making for not producing results. That's just my perception and others are certainly entitled to feel differently.

From Ice-dance.com’s recap of Lake Placid:

Wolfkostin explains choice for split season (senior at nationals and possibly other events)

“Originally the plan was to go Senior again, and then I had a fracture in my leg and was off ice for almost three months,” Wolfkostin explained. “We were trying to figure out the season when the rule change happened, so it was a great opportunity for us to get more international events, compete more.”

Other interesting tidbits in article include Peals’ summary of judges’ comments about their FD, and a lot of young Canadian's teams speaking positively about looking up to training mates Gilles/Poirier.

It's also ridiculous for people to expect athletes without a lot of money & who are juniors or relatively new on the senior scene to change their costumes mid-season. Is it something to expect from a medal-winning team like Chock & Bates or a lower-level team in which we know one set of parents has enough money to basically fund the entire lifestyle of the partner? Yeah, it's not uncommon to see happen.

But, please, be practical. The comments expecting Oona to change her dress during her first season in seniors were not practical. Same as it is impractical to think every lady that comes out of the junior ranks & then loses a partner can just recruit someone from a country that has less competition.

Generally speaking, if less established athletes aren't medaling or importing partners, I don't expect new costumes mid-season. (I can think of a couple athletes that seem to have really talented parents that sew, but otherwise I don't expect a change).

On that note, I'll also say that I generally think it says very good things about the skill & ability level of an athlete or athletes if they come up all the way through the dance ranks without the money that some of their competitive peers obviously have.

I may be wrong but I don't think I ever explicitly stated she needed to get a new dress during the season. Maybe that was implied in my observations about her costumes because I did find them unflattering that first season. If that was the impression I left, I do want to apologize. I thought I was mostly saying "I hope she is able to get in touch with Natalie Taschlerova's designer for next season because I think that person understands how to make dresses that flatter Oona & Natalie's similar body types."

I understand how expensive costumes are and am always surprised when skaters who don't have a skating income at the level of, say, Michelle Kwan at her peak, debut a costume change mid-season. That's just throwing money away - and judges telling skaters (like Carreira last season) that they'd score better with a different costume? They can just eff right off because that's not what they're supposed to be judging. I get why someone like Carreira did change her costume due to that feedback but I long for the day that someone looks the officials that give that type of feedback to them right in the eye and says "really, maybe I should just show up in a beige slip dress so that there's nothing about what I'm wearing to distract you from judging what I'm doing on the ice."

I think there's a difference between saying someone's dress is ugly and implying that someone's body is a problem.

I haven't really read anything (here on FSU) where people are critical of her body. I have read (and personally made) comments that her dress designs aren't good.

If I win the big lottery I pledge to get the Browns the costume funding they deserve. Now I just need those winning numbers... :shuffle:

I'll match this pledge! And probably extend it to one skater/team in every discipline each season who is the winner of the "oh, that's a most unfortunate costume design, let's get you something better" trust fund prize I'd set up with some of those lottery winnings, lol.

Hey guys, any news from Champs Camp?Or is there a different thread for it?
Not much, I suspect they're saving for the show tomorrow. Both Morozov/Chen and Flores/Desyatov are there, so the Skate America host pick is still being deliberated upon.

As for music selections this twitter user posted about the RDs:

Mostly a disco season

New interview with Leah Neset, focusing mainly on the Female Athlete Program at Children's Hospital Colorado that works with her on strength and nutrition and various female athlete-specific needs.

(I think someone forgot to tell the headline writer that they're not going to make the 2026 Olympics!)

Agreed it’s very unlikely, but who knows—they could have a meteoric rise through the ranks ala Papadakis/Cizeron, and there can always be unexpected retirements and/or injuries impacting the teams ahead of you. Assuming three US spots for dance, I think it’s not absolutely impossible.

That said, I am rooting for Green & Parsons, who were denied a spot the last time around.

It's a citizenship issue. He won't have it by then.

No, 2026 is out of the question unless he has been in the US a lot longer than we realize.

Or they're still hoping F/D might get one elsewhere? There's no split results here.

Interesting. It has seemed unlikely to me that the U.S. would get an invite off the replacement list until after they make the SA decision. The pattern over the last several years seems to be that countries doing the inviting wait out the countries that haven't named teams to their host berths yet.

Well, the thing is, the GP Host Commission changed the replacement procedure this list. It goes straight down the SB Top 75 list, so Harris/Chan are still next in line for a 2nd GP assignment before FlorDes.

And ID only had 5 WDs last season - 2 for HawBak (replaced by SmaDie and McNSpir), 1 for WangLiu which was a host spot that got replaced with another Chinese team, and then 2 that were within the 7 day window and the GP hosts didn't have to replace them (Taschlers CoC and KazRev NHK). I don't have my 22-23 tracking spreadsheet anymore but, IIRC, there were, similarly, very few WDs in ID.

In no way, if I was the USFS, would I be hoping/betting on FlorDes getting a GP elsewhere. China just decided to use their two host spots they kept after the initial GP list and the only two spots still open are GPdF host and SkAm host. There is a SLIGHT chance that Tanaka/Nishiyama may pull out of NHK (they just WD from Championnats d'ete quebec because she has some sort of lingering injury she's dealing with) but if that happens, that still only is one spot and it will go to HarrChan (their 1st GP is SCI).

Not to mention that the USA is maxed out at every GP except China. Even if there are withdrawals, F/D wouldn’t be able to replace non-American teams at those events.

Besides, F/D won the head-to-head over Morozov/Chen. They’ve earned SA.

F/D (180.62) are ahead of H/C (176.34) on SB List, but like you said, with US spots maxed everywhere but China there isn't much chance of them getting a spot off the list unless another US team withdraws.

I have no idea how reliable the information in this post is since the writer says that they're going to skate in the Milan Winter Olympics, but it sounds like ZingKol's Challenger assignment this year will be Nebelhorn.
