Chinese skating news & social media updates pt. 5, 2023 onwards

I think he was missing from the news clips linked earlier. I think I saw someone on weibo show his douyin IP was in the States. Wonder if for choreography or trying to get back into Raf's camp.

So I don't know what the news is, but seems Yudong was indeed with Raf. Not sure long term or short term, but as it seems, the fed is indeed investing into fresh men's talent.

Selection for ISU Championships this season:

Junior Worlds: Priority given to skaters in the Top 50 on ISU Season's Ranking. The other entries for Men, Women and Dance will be selected based on the results of the Junior Nationals (Nov. 19-27), the other entries for Pairs will be selected based on the results of the Senior Nationals (Dec. 21-24).

4CC: Priority given to skaters in the Top 50 on ISU Season's Ranking. The other entries will be selected based on the results of the Senior Nationals.

Worlds: Entries will be selected based on the results of the National Winter Games (Feb. 17-27).

Zhiming's free skate. Think he showed loads of potential.

Yudong weibo post from the States.

Am I reading it correctly? Wang/Liu are here?

Yes the starting orders are out. They are second up in group one. And Cheng Peng & Lei Wang will debut here.

I thought they didn't need to? (context: this is the 5th stop - to determine the CoC host spots, top 50 in WS had a free pass)

Maybe they wanted to compete here? It's a nice, easy re-entry into competition to start their season and a good way to support Chinese skating in general.

So they flew here from Canada for this one competition, and aren't instead focusing on preparing for CS events?

First look at Peng/Wang. Incredible step sequence choreography. Not sure I liked Wang's skating here, but unlike Peng who was just competing at the Olympics last year, he's been out for a long time. Fingers crossed they look better by the time the GP rolls by.

eta: @Karen-W Can Zhang/Yang get two GP spot? Don't seem to be on the GP list at all currently. They'll definitely get CoC (slightly ahead of P/W after SP, and will likely beat them on LP if all P/W can currently do are doubles for their SBS)

Highest score is actually Zhang/Huang, who aren't even eligible lol. Also, Wenjing in their K&C: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1Kj41167L6/

Tong Ruichen is talented in many aspects of skating (needs time though), but her jumps... less said the better. She leads after the SP.

Pretty much every singles' skater was lacking in the SPs. Day stumbling in his step sequence and losing control on spins that aren't amazing to begin, Peng Zhiming landing only a 3T+2T cleanly, An falling on a 3S (and not even attempting Lz or F)... Well, too many local competitions, I guess.

I think I like Zhang Ruiyang's presentation the most of the Chinese girls? Very tentative into jumps, and they need more work, but this is good skating, that hopefully won't turn into the Eteri-esque crap we're seeing on An. Music choice seems to be a Sui/Han tribute haha.

Actually liked her more than Tong Ruicheng overall, but I guess her protocols must have some URs.

Shouldn’t Xiangyi An (Nini) be #1? I’m counting on this to be her big breakout season.

She fell, had no combo, and the most difficult jump she landed was a 3Lo. Top 3 is a gift.

She's also doing a hideous catch-camel position this season, lost control on her combo spin, and seems to have dropped the change in direction feature altogether in the SP, which was one of the rarer features...

Too bad. These two programs looked so good, a few weeks ago-
New SP

New FP…golden goddess!

Not having to go through the Bilibili app.

LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LOVE LI/WANG'S MONGOLIAN-INSPIRED FD!

They are still pretty rough, but they have so many raw talents. Their presentation and expression are just so impressive, probably the strongest in Chinese Ice Dance for decades.

Also huge congrats to Chen/Xing for their COC spot! TEAM ZHENG XUN GO GO GO!

Another POTO... Whatever.

ETA: https://www.bilibili.com/video/BV1K8411d7NA/ Think I enjoyed this more than either of those two, even if they lack the capacity to bring out the music towards the end.

Anything is possible. They're on the alternates list and in the first group of 10, so I don't see any reason why they couldn't get a 2nd GP assignment. Might be a bit of a stretch, though, since the following other teams are in that first group of alternates too -

Peng/Wang (Espoo)
Hase/Volodin (Espoo)
Roscher/Schuster (SCI)
Osipova/Epstein (SkAm)
Beccari/Guarise (SCI)
Caldara/Maglio (SkAm)
Mokhovs (probably will get one of the SkAm TBDs)
Vouillamoz/Giniaux (GPdF)
Valesi/Piazza (GPdF)

Right now, the only TBD spots are host picks - 2 at SkAm, 1 at GPdF, 3 at CoC (seems like Zhang/Yang are all but guaranteedone of those), and 1 at NHK. While there are certainly going to be withdrawals, I don't know that I expect as many as there were last season.

Peng/Wang are all but guaranteed of CoC as well, so that's one more pair off that alts list.
Yeah, that's what I was thinking, but who knows what the CFSA is thinking sometimes. If Peng/Wang are named for one of the 3 CoC TBD spots then that moves Vaipan-Law/Digby into the first alternates group.

Zhang/Yang might have a better chance at getting two simply because none of the newly created Japanese senior pairs teams seem to be ready for competition quite yet. If the JSF decides to not assign one of those teams to NHK, then Zhang/Yang are the cheapest option to fly in for the event.

What an absolute joke. Peng/Wang winning with a program of SBS 2T+2T, 2S, 2Tw (?) AND an aborted lift? Against a 4Tw, more difficult throws, SBS 3S...I'm not a fan of Zhang/Huang but that was just ridiculous. That PCS is gonna crumble to the ground once they hit the international stage.

I wouldn't bet on their PCS falling THAT far. They do look good together as a team. But, I don't think they'll beat Conti/Macii, Kam/O'Shea or Pavlova/Sviatchenko at Espoo with that sort of TES content.

Have you seen their free skate? It was ROUGH. Not just with the struggle on the elements the skating wasn't smooth either. The scoring is a complete joke.
