2022 Skate America

They indicated that this was a sold-out event. As I glanced around the arena, I noticed any number of empty seats, I was perplexed, but could attribute these to the following:

  • Too many seats were allocated to sponsors and officials, etc. who elected not to send attendees
  • Some attendees elected to attend only one or a few of the total number of sessions
  • Some anticipated attendees could not make it and did not resell their tickets

It just looked pathetic.
It was buy all event or nothing. I think it would have been better if some tickets were sold as individual or by day. Its not always possible to do 3 full days of skating. But it did look like some sections were not filled at all.

If they do host again they need a good give back program for any unused sponsor tickets to sell individually and possibly save one section for individual ticket purchases. Of course there will always be some that cannot make it last minute.

Maybe, but at this point in my life, if I'm spending that kind of money for a vacation, I'm going to find something that my husband can enjoy too. Traveling outside of the US and combining it with a vacation for both of us is much more appealing.

You all don't believe me when I run estimates of attending events in areas like Boston as $10,000 - $12,000 for one person.

I estimate SC this week will be around $5,000 total for the two of us for 7 days. Probably a bit more because we upgrade to first class tickets.
How are you getting those cost estimates? 😳😳 I spent less than $5000 going to the Olympics for four days in 2010. I think the most I’ve ever paid for a skating trip was $3500. You’d have to be flying first class, staying at the most expensive hotels, eating at five star restaurants and having a lot of alcohol with meals.

Yes, I know. I was there.

Of course I'm partial to Vegas and loved attending the two years it was held with an audience. I felt like that arena was a great size and mostly full in the lower sections. There's not a shortage of hotels in a variety of prices and quality, plus the event hotel was connected to the arena.

As already discussed there's the give and take of any location. Easy airline access, transportation and parking, cheap/convenient lodging, food options, etc. No one place is going to be perfect.

We were on the fence about going this year, but it was decided for us when the all event tix were sold out in July (I checked this thread to confirm).

My vote would be back to Vegas!

There is always a section reserved for athletes and chaperones, and the general public is not allowed to sit there; there are also usually a lot of seats behind the judges reserved for judge training and ISU and USFS people, and the public can't sit there either. So you will often see certain sections with lots of empty seats.

There was a section with blue placards in the NE area of the arena which were probably those that you mentioned. I am speaking about those in other sections.

I think this is a great idea, especially for a small arena like this one. There are always those cases where people buy all-event tickets but can't make it on one of the days or for the gala.

My criteria for attending Skate America is based on ease of transportation and hotels within walking distance or easy public transport to the venue. If I have to rent a car at any point, I'm not going. The logistics of attending this event looked difficult to me and I passed on it.

I thought the LOC did a good job overall managing the event, but it is just not fun having to drive an hour to the airport the morning after an event ends (rush hour traffic). Being able to walk from the hotel to the arena is great, but I don’t mind having to rent a car as long as the airport is close. The airport commute is my biggest pain point with location selection. Thus my extreme desire to never return to Lake Placid.

By my estimate, had I gone, SkAm Norwood was going to cost around $2500-3000. So definitely more than what I paid for Vegas by about $1000 and that was with minimal to no sightseeing. Not ideal for a smaller competition but something I was prepared for. In the end it came down to logistics and having a bad prior month with travel/family/illness. Had it been somewhere convenient I might have still gone.

However, I would still consider going to SCOB in the future now that I know what hotel to book (of course they will change the shuttle next time). The more intimate venue looked appealing for a spectator.

I haven't yet calculated all expenses, but I estimate SA cost me a little over $2000. Which is probably more than my trip to Nashville would have cost (had I been able to go). My last SA was 2013 and I remember the cost was a lot less, but that was a while ago.

OK, added up my expenses (which included meals....and it's not like I wouldn't have had food expenses staying home) and the total is $2205. I'll note that I did have a $100 voucher from SW from when they canceled my flight to Nats. I couldn't use any rewards points for the hotel b/c I used up almost all my points on the Sheraton in Greensboro in 2020. But I'm building my balance again. :)

ETA: Ooops, I didn't add my share of the parking pass. $2295.

Ubers were over $250. That, the parking and the hotel were what I would consider overpriced. Airfare slightly higher than previous Boston trips, but if the venue was in the city, Uber between airport and hotel would be cheaper, and no car or parking. Hotel would be more expensive, but overall cost would have likely been cheaper.

I once figured out that I spent about $2,000 plus or minus on every skating event I attended. I'm sure I could do it more economically, and Nationals in San Jose will be considerably cheaper as I'm driving so no airfare involved and I'm staying at a very cheap hotel. :p But going forward due to a more limited budget, I will not be able to spend $2,000 per event. So it has to be within driving distance or have cheap airfare and the possibility of a cheap hotel or I can't go at all. Boston Worlds in 2025 will be challenging financially, but at least I have some time to save up.

You’re right, I find that very difficult to believe. It was a four day event, three if you don’t count the practice day, so you’re suggesting it would have cost you $2,500 or more per day? That’s really hard to square, even if you were making plans at the very last minute.
Sorry - i was comparing it like a 7 day or 8 or 9 day event of Worlds. But even if I do the 3 day event, it's generally an additional day, maybe 2 for travel especially since NBC forced USFS to have 2 events on Sunday. I could get out of Boston after Gala, but too late to catch a flight into Omaha, so requires missing events/gala or additional days over.

Even so when I looked at airfare back when it was first announced, for crappy basic economy flights, it was ~$1200. The day it was announced. If youve never flown the new basic economy discount flights, it means me at 5'4" and size 8-10 depending on clothing sizing cannot cross legs and my elbows touching fellow seat mates. If you are both normal size.

If ya'll think that size restrictions for clear plastic bags into arenas is ridiculous the airline definition of one small personal item might hold small bottle of advil. Which is all you get as a basic economy carry on. Trying to take anything larger in boarding group 5 or 6 - gets automatically tagged and you are charged anywhere from $35-50 to check your carryon. First checked bag is $100 (I never take more than 1 bag unless it's Europe).

Move up to Economy, now ~$1700. Want to choose your own seat anywhere from ~$26 to $45 more. Still check bag charge of $35.

I dont know Boston or Boston area, so i am not sure where cheap hotels. I'm looking for places that are close to any transportation hubs and in a safe part of the city. When I looked at those prices in 2014 - anywhere from $450-500/night, i suspect more now. That doesn't include taxes and fees, which typically bring the room costs to additional. $20-30 (so now 6 days in planning @ $500/day, lodging is $3,000). I won't drive in a large city, unless I have a travel buddy to help navigate subways trains, I need to be close to event. I'm not comfortable with subways/trains/buses unless there is someone who knows the city well helping me (ive been lost in Atlanta, DC on train systems). So need to add uber/cabs - who the hell knows but possibly $75/day, ($500).

I was just in Chicago, and an airport Chili's lunch was close to $45 for an appetizer, meal and drink. I would estimate about $100/day for food. Probably more. ($600)

The tickets. ( $300).

I've done the ask another FSU for a ride, she responded yes and then post event was nowhere to be found. So ride sharing is iffy. I've done tge share a room option - one who canceled on me (legit her husband was seriously ill, but I was stuck with full room) or two where discount hotels were our plans. One had no heat, they could fix it and moving rooms was no better, one where I was a little afraid to go to sleep.

Ok...$7500 because I always make plans for extras. Maybe you do not need to make a budget, but I feel icky about saying - dear husband I want to go to SKAM and it's likely to be $7500. To someplace you don't want to go

Or I can say, dear husband for an 8 day vacation to a place you want to go to and we can travel first class, rent a car, a nice hotel ($175/night), eat nice places, do some sightseeing activites, tickets for two of us for about $8500.

I can't justify going somewhere just for "me" activity when a "we" activity is close to same.

Those were for people affiliated with USFS - I got a seat from someone who had an extra. In order to get to the rink from the other side of Boston I ended up taking my dads car and driving the 45 min and parking at the free parking lot - the $200 to park at the rink was overkill. Shuttle was there waiting for me and I was at the rink 2 min later, with lots of signage. When I went from the volunteer area to the rink no one checked my tickets so not sure why people had wristbands? I do wish there were more food options - while their concession stand was good, there was only one food truck with food, the other two had snacks. For me i feel the opposite, SKAM I lucked out so just paid for gas and a snack (volunteers got free food - same as in the concession stands). I posted some pics on my Instagram with the skaters I met, and everyone I talked to was wicked nice. And watching the gala from right behind the ice and meeting all of the skaters after was a dream come true! It did take a little longer to get the shuttle to go back at the end but still not too long

Same here. I'd love to attend but if it sounds like a stressful (& potentially dangerous) hassle to get to the rink, no thanks. Most skating competitions end at night, & I don't want to be wandering around by myself trying to figure out how to get back to the hotel. It was bad enough getting slightly lost and walking alone around Cambridge during Worlds in 2016.

My ticket in row H was $253 including fees. Hotel was $277/night (AAA rate), which I thought was high given that it was far out in the burbs and not exactly 5-star, but I know hotels in Boston would cost even more. For 2014 Nats and 2016 Worlds, the LOC got great spectator rates...I think it was about $200/night each time.

At SA, my food cost nowhere near $100/day. Not too many fine dining establishments near SCOB, and we preferred to carry out for most meals. I don't think food in Boston (for just me) would even cost $100/day.

The car and parking totaled almost $600, split multiple ways. As I posted above, being in the city and using public transit would have made the trip a lot cheaper.

I know that Boston hotels aren't inexpensive at the best of times, but hotel rates may be higher than usual because hotels are trying to compensate for their financial losses during lockdown.

This year I am not going to any of these competitions in person, have been to Boston, Lake Placid, and PA cities for others in past years.

Skate America was stretched out over 3 days, with women's and Ice Dance ending on Sunday, and then the ending show also.

I noticed that the competition part of Skate Canada is taking place over two days, Friday for the shorts and Saturday for the longs, with only the ending show on Sunday.

I prefer the latter. It is easier for me to only have to be up & running for two days. How do you all who were there feel about the difference between the schedules of SA & SC?

I liked the 3 days and if it was two (and I had tickets for the full event in this assumption) I would be upset if it’s Friday sat since I work on fridays and would miss half the competition instead of use one day

@once_upon it makes sense that if you were planning a longer stay, it would cost more, but I still think it would have been cheaper than your estimate by flying into Providence instead of Boston (showing $459 round trip on Expedia) and hotels costs other people posted. Regardless, point taken that it's not a cheap trip to trek across the country for a skating event, which is why I've only traveled far for Worlds.

And even when I was working and more relaxed about expenditures, I never considered flying all the way to Vegas for three days of skating. (I also hate the city so am not interested in spending more time there.)

I went to Helsinki for Worlds because it was five full days of skating and airfare was reasonable since I was flying from Israel to US anyway. It’s not a cheap city but I found a lovely little hotel for less than $200 a night, figured out public transport, and with some good advice from our Finnish posters all went well.

I would have preferred Skate Canada's schedule. I didn't stay for the gala. I live less than an hour away, and I still think 2 days would be sufficient. And someday I might go to Skate Canada, and I would probably only do 4 nights 5 days. So I would like at least one full day to do sightseeing.

I prefer the two day competition with the gala on Sunday afternoon. Having the gala on Sunday night prevents a lot of people from attending since there is school/work/travel the next day. I doubt the schedule will change for SkAm since it is ruled by NBC. They want to show the women live on Sunday afternoon.

Except this year, they didn't, Sun aftn was on E!. I wonder if we will see changes to the schedule in future years, if NBC only wants a broadcast on Sat aftn.
