Gymnastic news #22 - Tokyo or bust

I still don't think that's right about subbing in the extra athlete if someone gets hurt in Tokyo. This is why they're naming alternates tonight and those ladies (along with the men's alternates) are all going to Japan as well. I'm trying to find some information about this because it's driving me nuts.

Grace.... :fragile:
They mean once competition starts. One competition starts, it’s too late to pull an alternate in. However with the extra spot, if someone gets injured in-between qualifications and team finals, they technically could sub in one of the two individual gymnasts as per the rules.

Grace got a bit of a gift from the gym gods with that floor score but I’m not complaining lol. She could’ve shut the door on McKayla with a hit routine though, now it’ll be a tough discussion probably.

I would wait to see what Wong does. With her floor score, she can score close enough on vault so that in the end the team would benefit more from her doing vault and floor compared to Grace and MyKayla.

We've never had this situation before with these 'extra' athletes though and in the past, we've had alternates for this very thing who travel near the team if not with them to the Olympics to be ready in case they're needed there. I really don't think those specialist spots are supposed to be used as 'alternates'. Does anyone here know? I can't find anything and honestly, I'm too distracted by the drama right now to look, LOL

That was yikes from Grace on floor…. She may have handed that 4th spot to McKayla with that.
I'm honestly thinking Leanne for the fourth spot. She will almost certainly not be called upon to do beam, so her fall on night 1 is irrelevant. She has been several tenths ahead of MyKayla on floor at every opportunity, and her DTY scores at the top end of the range. The way the other contenders for the specialist spots are going, MyKayla might be a better fit there. And Grace just doesn't bring that much that they don't already have despite being a very pretty gymnast.

Again, you’re misunderstanding. The alternates will still be subbed in if an athlete gets injured BEFORE competition. However, once it starts, the rules have always been that it’s too late to sub an alternate in because the team is final. With the individual spots now, since they are already competing, let’s say a team has a gymnast who gets injured in-between qualifications and finals, then the FIG allows a team to say pull Jade Carey in to join the team since she’s already on the floor competing. I don’t know why they allowed it but they have.

Ok my memory is fuzzy but is MyKayla the one who tweeted the gorilla meme about Gabby?

She has apparently grown quite a bit since then. College seems to have done her some good. She co-won the "sportswoman of the year" award at nationals with Laurie Hernandez, voted on by fellow competitors. So she seems to have redeemed herself in the eyes of many.

I think Suni hitting on floor with such a big score makes Leanne's quest harder. They need Skinner's vault potential more than Leanne's floor score, IMO.

ETA- but now I have zero idea who gets the second specialist spot.
