Gymnastic news #22 - Tokyo or bust

I remember Aly said in her book that after a competition she ate pizza and was chewed out by a USAG member who said it showed poor character for her to eat pizza publicly.

Also Shannon Miller was said to have tattled on gymnasts who snuck cookies into their rooms.

Well that's just piss poor planning. Who's running this sh*t?
I can remember several internationals in Colorado Springs where the headquarters hotel could not seem to deal with the notion that folks would want to eat either before the evening event (spectators, coaches,...) or after it (everyone). I listed to Morry Stillwell trying to explain to the dining room manager why they needed to open early for dinner and stay open later at night.

Going back a few pages to the topic of athlete food at the US trials. I'm watching MyKayla Skinner's vlog from Day 1 of women's trials. After the competition, THERE WAS NO FOOD FOR THE ATHLETES!!! And the hotel restaurant was closed, and the restaurants near the hotel were either closed or had 2 hour waits. Unbelievalble.

Mykayla & Co. got in line for takeout at a place near the hotel. When she got to a few more people in front of her, the restaurant person said they were closing and not taking any more orders!! Some of the people in front of her were gymnastics people, and begged the manager to please feed athlete Mykayla. In the end, she got food. I hope all the women who were hungry after an intense night of competition were able to find food. She is showing a good attitude about it, but I'm not.

I wonder if Marta is the one catering this event????????? (not even funny...)

It's part of this vlog... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i-riiF8JCHQ
I went to St Louis for both nights of men and the first night of women. The thing I noticed the most was the total lack of food options in the arena and in downtown. It was absolutely crazy. There were 4 restaurants close to the arena and that was about it. Some of the hotels had restaurants but they were so crowded! We ate at the Marriott’s bar area last night and it took 2 hours. One lady told us that not many people live in downtown St Louis and it survives on tourism so almost everything closed during the past year.
The meet was held where the Rams used to play and I was shocked at the lack of food options. They had a pretzel, some chips, a hot dog, one place had some bbq sandwiches and I think a cookie. Your options for drinks were water, RC cola, Dr Pepper, Diet Dr Pepper and 7 Up. There was a bar with beer and other alcoholic options, but only one full bar that I saw. On Friday night the lines for food were 60 people deep at least and they had run out of everything. I was shocked with no food, food options, since it ran during dinner time. I actually really enjoyed visiting St Louis (though going in that Arch is not for the faint of heart, yikes) but the lack of food was glaringly obvious and it isn’t the safest area (right by the hotels seemed ok) but I was there with my 10 year old so I didn’t want to wander too far looking.

Help. I lost the scoring link. When I go to myusagym and click through to the women, all I get is day 1.

I guess I'll be the lone person rooting for Grace tonight. She's had such a hard year and has been getting better and better over these last few competitions (and she does have worlds experience so it's not like she's some rookie out there). Honestly I just don't like McKayla's gymnastics (she's better than she was but IMO, she'd still get hammered by international judges for some of her routines) and I don't think we really need all that much help for the vault when the rest of the world pretty much only throws double yurchenkos anyway. Simone alone would combat that with any of her vaults and both Grace and Jordan have strong double yurchenkos which would score well internationally (and I think they said Jordan has been training an amanar although I'm not sure that's a vault you would want to debut at the Olys without any prep, LOL). It doesn't really matter who has that fourth spot so I would take the stronger and more consistent gymnast (aka, the Kyla Ross) who can cover anything if necessary and hold her own on VT and FX. Go Grace! :cheer2:

Hoping everyone has a great meet tonight! :cheer:

I’m team Grace or Kayla over McKayla too! I really don’t want to see Skinner on the team but if she manages to hang onto 4th, she will deserve it.

McKayla is much prettier without all that glittery makeup she wears during competition. Wow.
She doesn't seem to be wearing glittery makeup tonight and she is quite pretty. I'd like to see her make the Olympic team. Pac-12 represent!

It's not on any channel here. I can't watch tonight because I have to work in the AM. We have Para Ice Hockey.

It's not on here either but I logged onto NBCOlympics.com and am streaming to my TV instead of waiting for 8pm - I'm also sure that KGW will show the track & field trials live at 8:30pm which is when the WAG trials are supposed to air (gotta love tape delayed broadcasts).

Well thru Olympic athletes only need to look at college baseball. One game away from the finals a team was thrown out due to covid.
I’m actually surprised Japan hadn’t made it a required condition

Honestly really won't matter IMO if she still delivers on floor and especially vault. (And now NBC is going over the same thing - no matter who gets picked in 4th isn't getting assigned beam in team event).
But that person does need to be ready to step in on beam if needed. She probably did do enough though even if it wouldn’t be ideal.
