S - Substitute Entry

ETA:

I guess USFS doesn't expect that to happen.

Oh how lovely Kaiya is heading there she is such a talented skater and looks ready based on her performance in Alberta.

If anyone was wondering what change was made to the Lake Placid ladies' list on August 7, the only thing I noted was that Dora NAGY was removed from the group of Hungary's substitutes.

JGP France: Noémie Bodenstein replaces Anna La Porta for Switzerland in ladies singles. (Swiss test skates were held on Saturday. No change to their JGP Lake Placid entry: it's still Nicole Wigger.)

ETA: Also at JGP France, Leon Ausburg replaces Noah Bodenstein for Switzerland, which is unexpected: the siblings tend to be assigned the same competitions.

In lieu of actually updating their events page (which is now two JGPs behind :gallopin1 ), Skate Canada has apparently decided to make announcements via this countdown they're doing to the start of the JGP season. In today's entry, Bronsard/Bouaraguia's second dance assignment is JGP Croatia.

Well it seems like they know where everybody is going. They should update their page :soapbox:

But at least they gave Phan's assignments first!

The current known Canadian dance assignments:

France
1. Bronsard/Bouaraguia
2. McIsaac/Circelli

USA
1. Galiyanova/Lochhead
2. Makita/Gunara

Latvia
1. D'Alessandro/Waddell
2. McQuilkin/Portz

Russia
1. Bashynska/Beaumont
2. ??

Poland
1. ??
2. ??

Croatia
1. Bashynska/Beaumont
2. Bronsard/Bouraguia

Italy
1. D'Alessandro/Waddell
2. ??

Makita/Gunara, Galiyanova/Lochhead, and McIsaac/Circelli all seem like locks for three of the remaining spaces, then there's the fourth that is a wildcard.

This surprised me, I admit. W/C, especially, are probably the USA's second-best junior team based on domestic comps; that's a really strong push at a Russian home event where there will be three Russian teams, and you'd figure at least two of them will be drawn from the very best.

But then, the USFSA just gave up a dance spot for no damn reason, so strategy = :gallopin1.

I thought the same. USFSA kind of through them under the bus

Anyway, W/C are probably not ready for the top placements at the International level just yet. Maybe next year if Chen does not leave for school.

I figure they want to see Brown/Brown and Wolfkostin/Chen go head-to-head in an international event.

Still nothing for DelCamp/Somerville.

And how dare Russia move Kanysheva. I was so excited to see her at the first event! :mitchell:

Strategic move. Russia tries to ensure the maximum number of skaters at the JGPF. They will move skaters around all through the season. I never pay too much attention to the early scheduling because it always changes.

Not sure this is good for Khromykh. I don't think she is ready.
I don’t think she was as strong as Valieva, Kanysheva, Usacheva and Sinitsina, so maybe it is good that she is getting at least one event now, because later on the winners will be getting their second events and she could be left without one. I don’t think Kanysheva and Usacheva will be left without one.

I agree. I imagine Russia doesn't want to put their strongest ladies all together. I do think Kromykh is ready. She had a good SP. The LP had some errors but it wasn't bad. Russia's crop is not as strong as last year.

I don’t get the logic about sending good teams to weaker events just to place well. That is like saying I should take an easier course to improve my gpa. And jgp placements don’t always match what happens at jr worlds

And considering it is just one spot that is returned, the amount of angst is out of proportion imho. USFs has made worse decisions with fewer complaints.

It made no sense to name no second team to Latvia. But since USFSA didn't, it makes good sense to assign Wolfkostin & Chen to Russia.

Top 3 U.S. junior teams' scores this summer were Nguyen & Kolesnik, Wolfkostin & Chen, and DelCamp & Somerville. (I'll note that Cesanek & Yehorov are wildcards at the moment as they only did Lake Placid International and haven't gone up against any of these teams head-to-head this summer. It's possible they could surprise W&C or D&S head-to-head. They did defeat the Browns at LPI).

DelCamp & Somerville are on no JGP lists yet. That means a potential 4 spots required for the top 3 scoring U.S. junior teams from this summer (1 for N&K, 1 for W&C, and 2 for D&S). And only 4 events left for assignments. It makes sense for one of these teams to go to Russia because otherwise two would have to go to the same event & could cancel each other out in the standings.

(Probably D&S couldn't get the visa in time to go, though W&C don't really have any argument over them as far as preferred events go--as D&S defeated them in the head-to-head at Lake Placid).

*Also with Ushakova & Nekrasov's recovery process up in the air, it is possible that the final events on the JGP could be stacked more heavily than the event in Russia. But it's also possible U&N could be back in time for the Russian JGP or not make it back at all. It will be interesting to see if they are on the list tomorrow.
