DWTS S26: All-Athletes Edition! (i.e. the DWTS thread for NOT yammering about what happened 24 years ago)

Adam and Mirai had better make it through

I'm not worried about Adam - it's Mirai I'm worried about after that bogus tie with Tonya. I can totally see them sacrificing the superior dancer that Mirai is for Tonya and her notoriety!

It will be waterworks all the way through.

I hope Tonya doesn't keep going on with crying jags though - that can get old really fast (if she lasts past next week I mean).

Mirai has been my fave U.S. lady since she hit seniors. But my one criticism of her skating was her concentrated wood face (I suffer from this in my own skating). But tonight, holy shit, she was so expressive and danced beyond what I expected.

Adam was Adam. Funky, dancey and the RuPaul cover made me happy. Great job.

Oh Tonya. I started skating because of you. I admire you risking all the hate. Your dance was nice. Your dressmaker must hate you. She looks fit and fab in skating clothes, like Betty Big Boobs in that dress. And bottom 3, nope, not right. At least I saw real effort there and a shine of talent.

Imo, Mirai was always very expressive in her younger years, especially in programs like her "Pirates of the Caribbean" Olympic SP and in her 2011 programs. It was really after 2012 and when she went through body changes around that time that she seemed to set that aspect of her skating aside and focused just on landing the jumps. She did seem to try again this past season so I hope (if she keeps skating) that she brings what she can from her DWTS stint back into her skating!

ITA on Adam and Tonya (especially that awful dress they put her in!).

Tonya was awesome!!! And I think there was a gracefulness to her skating too. I think even more so in her younger years because she had better in between skating then or chose to show more in between moves then.

Sad thing is she probably would have been a two time national champion without "the incident." I don't see Nancy beating that skate at 94 nationals.

One thing that confuses ole ANL is this...

Both in the movie and in her package here Tonya says "I was the best figure skater in the world."

She was never World Champion or Oly Champion so how does she figure? Because she had one top element that only her and Midori could do makes her the best in the world???

Added later: SO basically the 3 figure skaters and the NFL'er were the top 4 among the judges..

Tonya being in jeopardy I guess shows that the general public either isn't buying it or aint warming up to her still...

But I have to say she was Great!!!!

Also added later: Was kinda cool Alison and the kid Tonya, McKenna were in audience.

Also Added Later: WOULDNT IT had been funny if Kwiatkowski was in the audience... (for those who know the irony).

I think one year at Skate America she beat Yamaguchi while landing all the triples through axel. It’s somewhere on YouTube - an amazing skate. No other woman had her tech content except for Ito. Her jumps were huge, especially against Yamaguchi, who wasn’t all that fast or powerful.

Her skating accomplishments and how it was “all taken away” from her. But I didn’t expect much else. Her dancing was quite good.

It was in fact all taken away from her with the lifetime ban. I don't know why anyone would argue against that. Now, many will argue that it was her own fault, but this does not change the fact of it all having been taken away from her.

Plenty of people likewise have it all "taken away from them" due to their own choices, mistakes or actions. Again, the experience remains the same regardless of the reason.

Definitely one of my favourite ladies' free skates of all time. I loved that program.

Tonya is so backwoods. She is so overly impressed with everything.

But she is backwoods - and would say so herself, and take pride in it (the kid who learned to shoot guns and grew up into the woman who could not only figure skate, but also fix a car (something few women can do in my experience).

I was really impressed with Tonya's dancing. As she said herself on the show "I was never graceful".

Well, I found her to be fluid and dynamic in her dancing, even a bit graceful.

How the contestants do it in high heeled shoes is a bit beyond my comprehension, as I never learned to wear heels at other (other than a very low 'v' heel or 1 inch block heel). I would think that Tonya doesn't wear heels at lot, given that she works as a landscaper and is busy at home with her child.

Guess she learned to wear heels at a young age though. Most girls do, me being the exception.

^ I wear heels maybe once or twice a year and every time I'm like "yeah this is why I don't do this more often", so I feel for Arike. It'll be interesting to see how she does next week, if/when she attempts to dance in heels.

Putting on those dancing shoes could actually help her with her posture, though. I know I have a tendency to slouch & hunch my shoulders but I automatically straighten my back when I'm walking around in heels, so there's that.

And I'll make my prediction before the show starts so I can come back and quote myself if I end up being right.

Adam, Mirai and Josh will be the Final 3. :p

My sister, who is an avid DWTS viewer, said exactly the same thing when I talked to her after the premiere. I agree.

Tonya is known to the entire world population and in a generally good light recently while Adam may be somewhat well-known after the Olympics. Mirai, I don’t think as much. I think Tonya actually may be the one to beat in this competition as much as some people think otherwise.

It's weird that they have two current figure skaters and one "old" one on the same show. They kind of have to split the votes. They didn't have two dancers from any other of the same sport <huh? :-) > (snow boarders, basketball players, etc.).

And - popped into my head last night - they had on the first American woman to do a 3X in competition and the latest one. :-)

Four weeks is not enough time for anybody to separate themselves from the pack score-wise.

By her logic, she beat Yamaguchi twice in 1991. So even though Kristi won Worlds, Tonya was really the best skater in the world in her mind. It’s Tonya logic, not rocket science.

They did have 2 basketball players (Kareem and Arike) and I think baseball and softball can be considered basically the same sport.

Did I read that correctly? Someone said she was robbed on her season of DWTS & she agreed? Just because she's probably the best gymnast in the world doesn't mean she should win everything she does. I watched her season & she was good but not the best.

Would peeps mind icing the Tonya rehash or moving it to the thread in GSD so that this one can stay focused on DWTS in 2018 and not ancient history? K thx. :saint:

You're beating a dead horse. People will post what they want to. Besides, Tonya brought it up by saying she was the best in the world when clearly she never was. The best she ever did at Worlds was 3rd, she only has 2 National titles & no Oly titles. Her record does not sustain that claim.

I will always believe that she helped plan the whack based on evidence. Instead of being grateful that she didn't go to prison she still has the poor pitiful me attitude. She probably didn't want to go into the Olys as Nat'l runner-up because no way would she have beat Nancy if Nancy landed all her jumps. After all, she didn't beat Nancy at the Olys.

That guy who danced last (Josh?) was the best male last night IMO & Mirai was the best female.

Tonya won silver at 1991 Worlds, not bronze. She has only one National title, the 1994 title was vacated.

I liked Adam best, followed closely by Josh and Mirai. But I don't bother voting, so what I like doesn't count.
