I'm not sure if that was permanent or only for the Latin SD though. Didn't they also change the rules about pants just for the SD last season because it had hip hop?
Yes those rules are SD specific. They are never change in the FD and the SD requirement will go back to 50% upper body coverage next year just like pants weren't allowed in the SD this season.

Out of curiosity, what is it that you like about it?

I like Wang and Liu, but I confess I don't really like this program. The first part feels empty and the second half is to the same music McNamara & Carpenter used to win 2015 Junior World silver so I have a hard time appreciating W&L's performance because it doesn't match the image in my head. Maybe if you tell me what you like about it, I will enjoy it more.

Okay, I felt like I needed to rewatch all three "Despacitos" before answering.

I think what I like about Wang/Liu's SD is that it feels a bit more delicate, polished, and smooth than the other 2 SDs. To me, anyway. I don't have the sensation of the first part being empty. I feel like it's smooth and has good flow and shows off their posture and partnering, with all the connection changes. I enjoy their rhumba section, as they have nice lines throughout and the pattern seems reasonably big to me (although not at level of top teams). I like their lift, it's different and interesting. I like the placement of the twizzles with the music. And the ending is fun and fits the music. I do not recall Lorraine/Quinn's program to the second-half music, so I don't have any negative associations with this choice. I like the sort of Afro-Caribbean-type feel of it, and I think it gives Wang/Liu a bit of a different, original look in the SD compared to some of the other teams.

Kaliszek/Spodyriev's "Despacito" is okay and they show good energy, as usual. But Natalia's bent free leg in the start of the rhumba section drives me nuts (see Euros SD). It ruins it. I feel like the rhumba pattern is just okay, not nearly as good as a lot of other teams. I don't know, I just feel like the Latin theme doesn't really work for them. They try, but sexy is not their thing. (This is what is clever about Wang/Liu's SD. They're not sexy either, but the program doesn't go for sexiness, it goes for a light, fun feel.) Also their footwork is kind of bouncy or something, instead of smooth.

I like Yura Min in the Min/Gamelin SD, she has good shoulder rolls and attitude and smile. ;) But, overall, the dance to me has a bit of a sloppy feel. Usually when they perform it, it's like they come close to missing connections on certain moves, or there's a split-second pause before they connect, or something. I suppose that sounds vague, but I just find their partnering to be not at the level of Wang/Liu, who seem very comfortable and smooth together. Also, I try not to let music choices bother me too much, but as my friend @Josh78 said, I don't understand why anyone would skate to any version of "My All" but Mariah Carey's. The cover version they picked is really pale-sounding in comparison, and it affects my perception of the dance. It leaves a kind of cheap, tinny impression, contributed to by Yura's costume, which I find a bit tacky.

So those are my thoughts on the "Despacitos".

According to people watching Russian TV, Chaikovskaya said Krylova is moving back to Russia.
I am not sure if it's true, but let's assume.
What will H/B do? I don't remember other Krylova's pupils.

Krylova also coaches the reunited Aldridge/Eaton, Agafonova/Ucar and the Chinese team (Wang/Liu?). If H/B wants to stay in Detroit, they might go to Igor or Marina.

Please H/B, don't go to Igor...

Please, please no. What other options do they have if they don't stay at DSC? Marina (but if the Shibs are continuing...)? Montreal is probably at max capacity already.

I'm sad about this if true. K/C are a great team. Whatever happens I just hope it doesn't halt H/B's progress because they're wonderful.

I don't even know what big names there are in Ice Dance coaches :

Montreal
DSC (and now ..?)
Igor
Marina
Zhulin
Lyon (Zazoui - Schoenfelder)
Does Platov still coach ?

What else do we have ?

Is Camerlengo staying in Detroit?

Yes, it is possible he could continue coaching with a new colleague.

Perhaps this just represents a shift away from Detroit as the epicentre of ice dance. I'm sure there will be other coaching options, but maybe elsewhere.

After all, who would have thought this time last quad Montreal would be as dominant as it is? Perhaps another big training centre or partnership will be formed out of the post Olympic shuffle. Every big time coaching team starts somewhere. I've observed a key component to success is to snag some talent into your coaching stable straight up. I wonder what teams Krylova will be poaching/taking with her? I don't believe there's any rule stopping Howayek/Baker going with her. Pechalat/Bourzat trained with Volkov and more recently Weaver/Poje were training in Moscow, as are a number of international pairs teams in Nina Moser's group.

It will be interesting to see what kind of impact this could have. After all, I suspect the strength of US ice dance has a lot to do with the number of quality training bases in the US.

I think Igor would be better for H/B. Igor is very good technician and he knows how to construct an IJS friendly program. Igor allows his teams to use different choreographers.

In TSL's Worlds preview, they also had an interview with Marie-France, which I found interesting. One thing was that she mentioned they have 17 teams right now. It sounded like the interview was filmed maybe a week or two ago. I only know 15, even counting V/M, Robledo/Fenero who've retired, and the two British teams who train there part time with Romain.

1. Virtue/Moir (CAN)
2. Soucisse/Firus (CAN)
3. Fournier Beaudry/Sorensen (CAN)
4. Lajoie/Lagha (CAN)
5. Fisher/Malette-Paquette (CAN)
6. Papadakis/Cizeron (FRA)
7. Lauriault/Le Gac (FRA)
8. Smart/Diaz (ESP)
9. Robledo/Fenero (ESP)
10. Hubbell/Donohue (USA)
11. Markova/Daze (BUL)
12. Garabedian/Proulx Senecal (ARM)
13. Fukase/Tateno (JPN)
14. Fear/Gibson (GBR)
15. Fear/Waddell (GBR)

Can someone give me an update on one of my husbands, Paul Poirier?

NBC hacked their performance.. How are they looking these days?

I loves me some Paul and Piper.. Can we PLEASEEEE get them in the top 5?????

Seems early for this, but the dust is beginning to fly and perhaps it will be easier to keep track of the ice dance drama later if I start now:

Splits:
Abachkina & Thauron
Pogrebinsky & Benoit (He retired)
Stairs & Royer (He is on IPS)
Fabbri & Pietrantonio (Both are on IPS)

Coaching News:
Krylova reportedly going to Russia.

Note: I've been looking at the World Standing scores more closely. Think Carreira & Ponomarenko do have a good shot of finishing top 24 on that list after the scores are adjusted and earning a guaranteed spot on the GP. And Pogrebinsky & Benoit's split means one less U.S. dance team ranked above C&P on the SB list if C&P wish to move up. We'll see.

ICYMI, Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) full ice dance event video replays via Olympic Channel (NOT-geoblocked outside USA, I'm told):

Re-posting from the 2018 Olympics figure skating forum in Kiss & Cry re. the 2 OBS commentators:
As there have been questions in the PBP threads about the identities of the Olympic Broadcasting Service (OBS) commentators, I thought I would start a thread in a vain attempt to circumvent those queries. The OBS commentary is what you are hearing when it's not your regular local skating commentators, or where your broadcaster has elected to take this default service rather than use their own commentators.

This Winter Olympics the OBS commentators for figure skating are Belinda Noonan and Jim Van Horne.

Belinda is a former Australian figure skater, who now works as a consultant for the Olympic Winter Institute of Australia (OWIA). Here is her Wikipedia entry. Some may also find this article by her of interest.

Jim Van Horne is a Canadian sports commentator. Here is his Wikipedia entry.

I also found this picture of Belinda in the programme book for Torvill & Dean's 1985/6 world tour. :D

C/P have not yet won jr. worlds, they are still junior eligible, and there’s a log jam at the top of US ice dance. I’m betting they stay junior.

On top of Stairs/Royer and Fabbri/Pietrantonio, in Canadian junior dance splits (of those who competed internationally) we've also had:

Irina Galiyanova and Tommy Tang
Olivia Han and Grayson Lochhead

It sounded like Tommy was going to focus on school moving forward. Irina and Grayson were both on IPS, but have since announced they are pairing up. They both train with Carol Lane and Juris Razguljaevs.
