Who Do You Think Will Opt Out of Worlds?

Yuzu's ankle is not in good shape and it was only with the help of very strong pain killers that he was able to skate in the Olympics at all. Although he has not officially withdrawn from Worlds, everything else he's saying in interviews would indicate that it just won't be possible. Those of us who follow him closely aren't even sure he will be able to skate in the Gala. So if you want tickets to the men's events at Worlds, there probably are many fans already looking to sell them.

As for Javi, I seriously doubt it. His goal was just to get an Olympic medal of any color and he's achieved that goal plus two World gold medals. He has nothing more to prove. He's a great skater and a lovely person and I think he's going to enjoy no longer having to train and compete.

Do you seriously think he'd be better? He got more and more annoying as the week went on. I'll just mute him like I do Johnny and Tara. Tanith should be the commentator for everything.

Me too. Tanith is fantastic, a natural TV presenter in general. Plus of course her technical knowledge about figure skating as well as being an athlete.

Scott drives me nuts. He's like my ADHD uncle that drives everybody crazy but we love him anyway. We just don't take him too seriously.

Men

Yuzu is still suffering an injury but has told the Japanese press he wants to continue. He may skip Worlds but show up next year.

Javi said something to the effect that he is washing his hands of skating, but he may go to Worlds to secure spots for Spain and then retire. I am pretty sure this is his last season though. He has achieved a lot.

Adam has made conflicting comments on his future. Prior to the Olympics, he said he may stick around to try out the new system. However, his attitude has changed at the end of the Olympic competition and he may retire. Age and different world opening up for him. He also is undecided about Worlds according to NBC.

Bychenko is retiring. Regarding Worlds, Samohin could score enough to be top 10 in a watered down field and still get spots for Israel. I think that lets Bychenko off the hook but we will see.

Chan is done.

Brezina has said he is finished. I think during the telecast it was stated that this was the last time he would be on competitive ice so I don’t think he is going to Worlds. The Czech Republic doesn’t have anyone waiting in the wings.

Ge said he was retiring last year but stuck around for the Olympics. Someone said he was injured so I would think he won’t be at Worlds. Like Brezina, he has no countrymen to save spots for

Ten is back and forth but I don’t think he will be in the mix anymore even if he stays beyond this season

For reference, entries for Worlds must be submitted by the federations "not later than Monday, February 26, 2018 – 20:00 h, local time Milan / ITA."

ETA: Any listed alternates still could end up being subbed in before the start of Worlds, as we know. IF Adam decides to opt out, I'm sure he will let USFS/Jason know as far ahead of time as possible.

Has Adam announced anything? I would assume if opportunities come his way following the Olympics he probably wouldn't pass them up if they are good.

Chan I believe is done.
I wonder if Javi will continue. With two world titles and a great skate to win bronze in Korea, not sure what else he wants to skate for...?
Javi said, after the medal ceremony, that he was very tired but would talk to his coaches. My guess is that he has accomplished his goal, and would like more time to be involved with figure skating in Spain.
Adam said he would not be going to Worlds. He said his 3 programs went so well and he has a team medal, so he is satisfied with that.
Hanyu said he skated with an ankle that had not completely healed. Probably better to skip Worlds, which he has already won plus 2 OGMs.

If Adam takes over the interviews we can turn the entire thing into an outlandish fashion show where the commenatary team preens and tries to get attention.

Thank goodness for the live stream!

I just read an interview with Javi from around Euros, and he said he doesn't know what he's doing after the Games. And regarding next season, he may take time off after this season, get bored, and come back. He also may decide to go for 8 Euros titles and match the record set by Karl Schäfer. He didn't seem to serious in the interview, so I doubt he will, but he's covered his bases...

What I'm wondering if he's going to stick around Toronto for a while, or head back to Spain right away to work on opening the skating schools he's talked about and start coaching there. It would be interesting to see him start as part of Orser's team for a bit to get his coaching feet under him before he sets out on his own.

Javi's interview (in Spanish), "Javi Fernández on his arrival in Madrid:"
(Google translation) "Although he does not yet see his retirement, 'SuperJavi', as his followers acclaim, seems to be clear that in the near future he will compete less. " I still want to do some more competitions , but I do not know if they will be full seasons,"

For the coming world championships, now he got back to Spain from Korea, he will have to fly to Korea again for the Gala and if he competes in March he'd have to fly to Canada to train then to Italy.... It would be pretty tough, like his Morozov days. Although I wish he comes to Milan! (I'll be there!)

I would imagine Spain would greatly encourage Javi to go to Worlds. He would be able to get Spain spots for next year's Worlds.
Are federations really like bad bosses , just squeezing every last drop out of their workers with little to no regard for anything other than their own selfish gains? Javi has done more for the Spanish federation in the last 12 years than every other skater they ever had put together. If they can’t gain spots this year without him, then they can’t get them next year either, so what’s the point.

If that happens, I wonder if the other alternates would be reshuffled?

Well, US Figure Skating does not normally reshuffle, but if Adam WD from Worlds before they submit names, the alternates would 'move up a spot'. If Ross declines to be considered (possible), I would imagine that the alternates submitted would likely be Aaron, Hochstein, and Dolensky.

I’m a little confused as to what you’re saying. Jason is first alternate. Ross is second, Max is third.

If someone withdraws, then Jason will move to the team leaving an alternate spot available, but only if the WD from Worlds happens before the deadline. If it happens that way, then US Figure Skating could add a third alternate not named after the US Championships (Hochstein). If Miner has declined the alternate spot (possible), Hochstein might already be added, and could open the door for Dolensky to be added were Jason called up.

Oh. Okay.

I'm 50/50 about whether or not Adam will go. I don't even know if he knows yet.

As far as Javi, I think he might go. Milan is closer to Spain than Korea, so he might have more friends/family able to come see him compete if he chooses to go.

I doubt that Nathan or Vincent will skip worlds, and Adam seems to be hinting he will pass on Milan.

Ross deserved better than second alternate behind Jason.

At least Brown came back and skated well at Four Continents, which is something.

Adam skated up to his top ten potential in PyeongChang, but I'm still pissed off at how US Skating shafted Miner.

Ross should have been first alternate for the Olympics, but no way should be first alternate for Worlds if Jason gets subbed in. Worlds = spots for next year. You have to send your strongest skaters.

I think Ross has retired anyway. So, not really an issue now. Earning 3 spots for the US will be up to Nathan and Vincent. The third ranked team member won't really be a factor.

I wouldn't be counting those chickens. Everyone said it would be on Nathan to earn the spots last year too. Didn't work out like that.

Jason will give extra insurance, in any case, should he be sent. In fact, he may have an interesting advantage given that he won't have any of the post-Olympics hangover others might have. Not to mention that he'll be completely under the radar, which is a really good spot for him.

If Javi/Patrick/Yuzu don't show up it would be cool to see all three U.S. men in the top six, I think it's totally possible. That would be possible with Adam or Jason --but Jason has the extra PCS to get there. I found it interesting that Adam didn't really get Jason's "artist" PCS. Jason's PCS average is 91.00. (Compared to 87.87 for Nathan, 86.12 for Adam and 75.12 for Vincent).

Actually it's pretty complementary to Vincent. Vincent scores high TES and Jason scores high PCS and obviously Nathan will likely lead the team in overall score.

But we'll see. I know it seems like Adam isn't going to go, but a lot of folks thought Jeremy wasn't going to go after Sochi and he did.

Regarding karne's point, Nathan basically finished way lower than expected in 6th so Jason basically had no room for error and had to basically be the best of the "non-top 6" and he was.
