I'm disappointed that Hong Chau was not nominated for 'Downsizing' - she was nominated for a Golden Globe, but Janney won, and 'Downsizing' did not get much buzz or promotion. The film was indeed offbeat and quirky, but I think Chau deserves five years worth of Oscars for her performance!

But since she's not a contender, I am hoping Janney will win - and am expecting her to.

I found it interesting that both Lady Bird and I, Tonya have dysfunctional mother / daughter relationships (at opposite ends of the spectrum, of course), as a major storyline for each movie.

Both films were excellent.

But, again, if the Biellman was important, the top ladies would have done it. Which means the top ladies of the time would have worked on it or there would be different top ladies who were capable of it.

Even in other interviews, she rubs people the wrong way. I remember after The Whack, I was posting on a Sports message board and a bunch of guys who knew nothing about skating were posting like crazy about it. Every time Tonya was on tv, they (and a few others) would say "she's lying! I can tell she's lying!"

... that's right. i personally love all rebels and non-conformists who break boundaries on and of the ice, Bowman, Bonaly, Bobeck, Candeloro, Sasha chewing gum on the podium and handing fone to president in 2002, Thomas wearing unitard instead of a dress, Kulik's "giraffe", Medvedeva's extra 3X, Weir's costumes, etc..

But with Tonya, it's not that she drove a truck, or had little money for fancy costumes, or was not a "princess" (I hate "princess")... the best way to describe her is that she constantly brought "troubles" and "dirt" to skating during all years she was an elite skater. She complained, she swore, she wiped her nose with her hand, spit out gum, bragged that she is a "red-neck", made her ugly marriage and relationship with mother into public display, had this or that issue with equipment claiming lack of money while spending them on a pimp-car and other showy junk... and then the "wack". I am not afraid to sound mean, i am not a social worker to have to process all the "Tonya's dirt and filth" when i come to watch skating with reasonable expectation of an aesthetically pleasant event. If i pay for a ticket to Disneyland, i do not need to see how they process garbage and listen to their employees personal difficulties.

So, your fairy tale image of the life of figure skaters was shattered when you heard Tonya didn't have a "Wholesome American Family?"

Well, I'm an Oregonian and I'd agree that The Oregonian hasn't been terribly kind to Tonya over the last quarter century.

Oregon is, though, a beautiful state with good air (except last August during the forest fires when smoke & haze filled the air for several weeks), good water (I drink straight from the tap, no need for filters here), and mostly clean (some parts of Portland I'd suggest avoiding though, lol). We also have very polite drivers who know how to use their turn signals and eventually the road rage from transplanted Californians and Washingtonians mellows (I speak from personal experience since I lived nearly 2 decades in CA and learned how to drive down there - I am a much saner, calmer driver than I was 14 years ago when I moved back up here, lol).

Kristi's a class act. Say what you will -- and I know I've defended Ashley and others -- but there's something to be said for training skaters not to let every single thought they have come out of their mouths. And it's more effective, too. All she had to do was laugh a little and delicately mention "artistic license," and you knew EXACTLY what she meant.
