I agree but if he doesnt skate cleanly Hanyu, Uno, and Fernandez all have the potential of beating him. So he still could hypothetically finish as low as 4th atleast, even if he also has the chance of winning.

I am a Nathan fan but I agree with you to some extent. I personally think Nathan needs a 6 quad program to seal the deal

I really want Fernandez to medal. I dont care too much which medal (although gold would be great), but atleast a bronze or some medal after missing in 2014. That is my one biggest hope for the mens event, I dont too much care about much else except I would like to see a way better skated event than all of 2006, 2010, 2014 overall too, something closer to 2002.

I have this dreaded fear the podium will be Hanyu, Uno, and Chen in some order and Fernandez will be the one to miss out. I am almost sure the medals will come from those 4, but then nobody saw Boyang Jin medalling going into either of the last 2 worlds so he could be the bronze surprise spoiler yet again (wont be if the event is well skated though). And it is hard to completely count Chan out, although even a bronze would be incredible for him after the season he has had. Kolyada is the one other one who I would give an outside shot of a bronze, but he will have to skate way better than he did both at Europeans and the GPF where he blew a huge shot to win.

His musicality was also indicative in his competition programs in 2012. He showed easy multidirectional skating, transitions in and out of every jump and spin, and backloading (2/6) before it became trendy. His PCS were ~10 points higher than Jin and Kolyada and about 1-2 points better than Uno at that time, circa 2012-14. He looked to blossom in 2012-13 before being derailed by injuries thereafter.

At ‘17 Worlds, Chen’s poor finish was linked to boot issues. He seems to have identified and resolved the problem, so I am quite hopeful all is well heading into the Olympics

I think it was pressure too. First time in a big event and with a lot picking him as the favorite too. He has a ton more experience now a year later, and will have gone through that rough learning experience.

Ha ha, here's Nathan looking at his Super Bowl commercial for the first time on NBC live:

Nah, I think Nathan Chen is really cool under pressure. He's been that way his entire career. It's been the physical injury hurdles, bone-growth issues as an adolescent, boot issues more recently and other outside factors that have been the biggest hurdles he's had to overcome. He's quite strong mentally and he has a laid-back, no-nonsense personality. Not much seems to faze him. He's focused on his goals and he and Raf seem to be communicating better than when they had a rough patch a couple of years ago.

Not to be mean but seeing Lysacek's name amongst that group gives me a chuckle. He deserves his OGM and all, but somehow he doesnt fit in that line of legends comfortably.

Personally I think that is a ridiculous statement. I will never understand the Lysacek haterzzz, but to each his own I guess.

Nathan...I personally love his new streamlined athletic looking costumes and haircut. He is a small guy and easily gets lost in bigger, heavier costumes. Besides, I’m a bit tired of men’s costumes with too many sequins and other distracting fluff.

My wishes for Nathan are for a more reliable triple axel and a stronger posture with less looking down at the ice. I’d like to see him hold his chin up more. Less chin towards chest. The look of confidence from a held up chin goes a long way. See ballet dancers. Whatever happens at the Olympics, I hope Nathan plans on sticking around. He is in the college application process at some pretty big schools. I don’t want college to steal him away from us yet! He is just beginning to hit his stride and can develop his artistry so much more. Selfishly, I want to enjoy the ride for a lot longer. I’ll be cheering loudly for him at the Olympics!!

We kind of forget the impact of Nathan's 4 clean quads performance at 2016 U.S. Nationals in the fp -- maybe because the judges held him back a bit on components and he landed in third place overall. Also, at that point Nathan was a newbie to seniors, having competed in juniors that season. Plus his injury during the exhibition and having to pull out of Worlds and Jr Worlds to have surgery also lessened the initial impact of what he'd accomplished. But the time-out was perhaps a blessing in disguise, since Nathan came back even stronger for his first full year in seniors.

Haven't seen this posted. Nathan talking about his 2018 Nationals Free Skate. The hair has already grown. I'm happy to hear him mention going to 2 Olympics.

I have seen discussions about Nathan doing 7 quads sometime this year. In this video he talks about being the only person (currently) who can do all five quads. I would love to see a performance with all 5 in the same program, though I don't think it will happen.

https://youtu.be/obR2TAVXzXA?t=214 Can anyone tell me who the other skater is in this video of Nathan doing a 3axel?

He's such a smart, well rounded kid. Somehow he doesn't take it all too seriously, yet is completely laser focused at the same time. He just kinda rules at life. Go Nathan!

I think the 4L is out, but I’d like to see him repeat 4Z and 4F as first 4 jumping passes. He can do it and it would rack up points. Then a 4T combo and 4S: Six quads

His lutz was MIA at Nationals. I wonder if he's gotten it back in training since then.

Currently on Gus Kenworthy's IG story he has a video of going through the SF airport (connection from Denver) on his way to Olys. He goes underneath a banner of him and Nathan and it looks like they are holding hands he says. And he is right! tee-hee

I have no idea how to post someone's IG story but if you wanna see check out Gus Kenworthy

We've been talking about this for weeks. What a hoot.

Here's a new local article about Nathan and Ballet West - Great pictures.

Ballet West also put out a press release about Nathan a couple of weeks ago. I don't know if it got posted - https://balletwest.org/news/academy-alumnus-nathan-chen-headed-to-the-winter-olympics

And yet you ARE being mean. And with that rofl smiley, I'd say you're being downright obnoxious. And I disagree about Evan. You know, for Nathan's cheer thread, several of your posts haven't been particularly cheerful towards Nathan - rather negative in fact. And for others as well. Just sayin'.

I just bought a Nathanoca cola bottle. Will arrive sometime in early February. :)

Darn! :( I've yet to find any Nathan products in Orlando! I found the Shib Sibs Minute Maid juice box but no Nathan cereal box (in every store it's a hockey player or snow boarder! :angryfire). I'm getting worried that the Olympics will come and go and I won't find them at all!

Evan is a National, Olympic and World Champion. He is a multiple world medalist, GPF champion and I think he has won 4CCs before (?). He has nothing to be ashamed of. The haters do

You can order Nathan cola online. I did. Now I have to find the shib sub Minute Maid. Is there any other skater-related item I missed?

Well said! :respec:

I don't care if an athlete is in first or the final place. ANYONE who competes for their country is amongst their country's best and deserves some respect! And Evan went above and beyond what most will ever be able to accomplish athletically!

Thanks for the tip!

Interesting Icenetwork article with Raf and Nathan each discussing the same three topics: http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2018/02/06/265799948

Good interview without the same old fluff. I like this insight that Nathan gives about Rafael as a coach:

Hersh: Raf thinks few young skaters come to him because he doesn't give out praise constantly and because a lot of people think he is mean. Is Raf sparing with credit so it means more when he does say, "Good job?"

Chen: I would say that's true. Also, I grew up in a very Chinese-based family, and my parents are exactly the same way. When they say bad things about you, you know they have your best interests at heart. They're not trying to pull you down; they're trying to actually raise you up. That's more impactful than them congratulating you all the time.

Sometimes, when I work with coaches who do congratulate me all the time, it feels fake, not genuine. When Raf does congratulate me, you know you did a good job. Ultimately, you know that regardless of what he says, he wants you to be better. So you just try to use that as a positive versus a negative.

Hersh: Do you agree that some people do think he's mean?

Chen: For sure, but they didn't really get a chance to meet him and know him.
