It's more forgivable for P/C. They're still a young team despite their prodigal and unprecedented success. V/M it's unforgivable. But the issue is not their SD, it's that cheesy free dance. Very, very poor choice.

That Ed Sheeran SD isn't forgivable at any age, let alone for a team that is old enough to own 2 senior WC titles. The genre this year is an absolute fail. And that includes Coomes/Buckland.

Do you'll think the latin SDs would be better if it was the CD/OD format?

I did like Torvill/Deans 1994 rumba. Part of that was they didn't have the (basically nonsensical) requirements of the SD; and part of it was how they internalized the rhythm and attitude within their bodies. It wasn't just a nod to rumba.

As usual from certain users on this board is excusable if P/C or any other ice dance team reuse lifts, have programs that are not related to the theme at all, make mistakes but the second V/M do any of these, NOT ACCEPTABLE!!!! :rollin:

Exactly people on here act like this is P/C's first senior season and their 15/16 years old, lol.

I think Christopher Dean is a great professional and knows what a Latin dance is.

That may be true, but I'm not seeing the connection between that and the Sheeran SD. I think the SD requirements hinder any choreographer trying to make a good Latin dance.

As I've said before, I expected great things after P/C said they didn't want to do something cheap and cliche and then heard they had Dean choreographing. The result has been disappointing to say the very least. But it scores well, and I suppose that's all that matters in the end. But I expected more from artistes like P/C.

For all the talk of Dean being a great choreographer, I must admit that I haven't liked anything he's done for anyone in years.

He just seems to be on the wrong path or worn out or something.....
I loved the FDs he did for Manta/Johnson the past two seasons and their SD this season. Unfortunately, this year's FD is a mess.

Wouldn't WeaPo and even C/B's music choices be considered a bit more what you're thinking? I do know Kaitlyn Weaver saying they were trying to go for more how actual people were dancing to their rhythm rather than ballroom. I also remember people thinking WeaPo's SD was boring even though the way they sold the second half at Skate Canada made me a real fan. I think a lot of skating fans (and judges) get bored of authenticity (and won't recognize it anyway).

Yes, I appreciate the effort on W/P’s part. It’s just that the first step sequence is so generic in choreography it could be to so many other genres. I think her facial expressions in the last portion were attempting to go back to strictly ballroom.

Why I brought up Salsa specifically is because there are so many people, Latino or not, who go to Salsa clubs on weekends to dance in cities all across the US. It’s not exotic or inaccessible. There’s just so little sensuousness or sultriness in this collection of SD’s but plenty of cheese.

As for the flat-out Latin Ballroom programs, I actually thought C/L’s SD is one of the better ones because Luca moves pretty well. He and Jean Luc have the best ballroom steps for the guys.

Christopher Dean is from another era, I think currently the CoP is just so jam packed with requirements he's not really allowed to be as creative as he wants. I think Manta/Johnson are a more "dance-y" team so we have that at least.

The SD simply asks for A LOT to be done in 2 minutes and 50 seconds, teams get like 10 seconds to dance at all and then you gotta go and push out some deep edges and hold onto each other to try get their levels with a crazy acrobatic lift that loses any sense of "latin" feel at all. Rhumba is actually a pretty open type of dance yet we need the holds in ice dance. Therefore we ended up with a rhumba pattern that's all in a killian hold. Boring.

I finally got around to watching V/M's SD for the first time this season, and I don't get why they did this. They're incredible skaters and pretty much everything about the packaging is wrong.

SDs tend to be a hot mess even when it's not a challenging style to interpret. I hope the relevant ISU officials do something about it post-Olympics.

I honestly feel V/M went with this out of the box approach because if they went with traditional music, people would say it's too close to their previous Latin programs. I wonder how much people would complain that it would be too similar to their Hip Hip Chin Chin program?

Then we'd be hearing about how they did the same thing over and over. It's an endless cycle.

I have been wondering though if V/M ditched those outfits and went in for something more traditional, would the entire look of the program change?

I like both teams very much, FYI. And I've never said anything about lifts ever so I don't know what you're blabbing about with that. You're just opening your mouth and letting things come out.

I think most judges (and fans too) have a traditional ballroom-like concept of what Latin dance is, and that's likely why so many teams are using Latin ballroom music, to play it safe. W/P and C/B are going for a more authentic Latin look but their programs have gotten the same negative sentiment here as the ballroom themes and V/M and P/C's 'Latin-style' programs. Obviously, it's a subjective sport and everyone is going to have a different opinion, but for the Oly season I wish the ISU had chosen a more 'standard' rhythm, such as waltz or tango (or quickstep, but that was used 4 years ago), where there is less variation and disagreement among judges and cultures as to what constitutes correct music/dancing.

We also saw this with the folk ODs...I remember teams trying to do authentic folk dances/themes and changing their programs after getting feedback from judges that the program didn't fulfill their idea of what that type of folk dance or music should be (B/A's Appalachian folk OD in 07-08 comes to mind).

I’m going to be honest and think fans have such high expectations and don’t consider how difficult the requirements in the SD are these days to allow teams to have the freedom to dance like we want them to. Like hip hop last year I also wonder how much we all really know about Latin dancing.

Sorry, when I wrote it, I meant Chock/Bates. Their last Marc Anthony piece is a salsa, a Latin pop version of salsa, but a salsa...I wish it was like 30 seconds to one minute longer though.

Pleasantly surprised to see to the French and Italian judge at 9.50 for Virtue and Moir's skating skills. I guess I didn't need to make such a cynical prediction based on past history. :) (We'll see what the free dance brings. :p)

Watching Cappellini and Lanotte, I was quite shocked to see how inferior their skating skills have become. Such shallow edges on turns (surprised they could get a partial 4 with edges so shallow), skating in straight lines, entire sections where both partners are just gliding. Very inferior.

I posted that elsewhere, but there is usually no problems between France/Canada skaters/Judges. They might inflate score for their people (no more than any other country though) but won't definitely lowball the other country. But then we'll see in the free, it should be okay.
However, US/Canada judges/skaters don't always get along... same for France/Italy (Based on previous comps in the quad).

I think Anna&Luca had clearly time off (injury) and it showed.

They're both heinous. Neither program is as good as either team.

Sorry, all of you are so ridiculous with the things you're throwing out - "unforgivable", "heinous", "isn't forgivable" - and all of that about music/program choices in ice dancing . Sorry once again, I just couldn't help myself. After all, it's all so totally subjective - all just a matter of taste (not good or bad, just a different taste). But all of you are acting as if your personal taste is the only right one and an indisputable gauge of whether something is good or not.
