From Russia with love [#28]: Autumn to Winter 2017

So Anton S has moved back to St Peterburg then? Last time I read anything about him, he was a politician in Moscow.
I believe he was a "deputat" in St. Peterburg. When he quit that position, he might have moved to Moscow; that would be logical since the company he is now involved with is in Moscow.

Looks like Julia Lipnitskaya will do commentary at Rostelecom (and probably other events as well) :)
http://tass.ru/wfys2017/articles/4656083
:D
We need to be careful with statements in the press about “Julia’s future”. She made comments on her future before, media printed them in all sorts of variations, and then Julia would say “that’s not exactly what I said… I said “maybe” or “in the future”, and not now and done”.

The exact words said by Julia (in a press conference at the Russian Youth Festival) are: “I am planning to try myself out as a commentator at the upcoming GP in Moscow”. She did not state she’s hired officially, or which channel/publication hired her, nor any channel/publication confirmed it.

Julia, in the same press conference, said 2 more interesting things. That the next step in progress of the sport is 5X jumps. And that in order to raise the popularity of Figure Skating in Russia, next Olympics should be held in Russia again. Some people think that Julia needs at least some basic training before she can commentate, given she can be "shy in public".

There are over 20 articles about Julia’s interview @ the Youth Festival, with a wide range of interpretations of “what she said”… from “Julia became a TV commentator” to “Julia is thinking of…” to “Julia found a desk-job”.

Here is Julia's segment of the interview from the Youth Festival. It's in Russian
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTw-aCVqjdA

She made 2 other interesting comments (interesting because i have note noticed the same things).
- "Few years ago Men used to put only 2-3 quads in their routines. Now out of 8 jumping elements in each routine, men are doing 6-7 quads".
- "Japan has the best skating fans who follow their (japanese) favorites around by bus loads, fly with them on the plane, and occupy whole hotels at events overseas. In America the interest for Figure Skating is almost non-existent now. If you go to their (American) local competitions and Grand Prix Events, the seats are all empty, except for 2-3 rows maybe. It is however different if it is Worlds; at Worlds there are many people."

Are there any men who have 6-7 quads in their routines?

“I am planning to try myself out as a commentator at the upcoming GP in Moscow”. - we can understand on that way she will be the commentator..

But if she didn't say these things and the media wanted to make great news on him that is awful. And they will ruin her...

Eteri Tutberidze interview:
http://www.fsrussia.ru/files/mfk_magazine/wfk_10_2017.pdf
http://fs-gossips.com/eteri-tutberidze-difficult-jumps-shouldnt-frighten/
Today your young athletes try not triples, but quadruple jumps.

– Because it’s an evolution. What the girls did yesterday, today is not enough, and tomorrow – especially not enough. Today’s the generation of athletes looks at figure skating otherwise. Probably, it’s possible to compare with the fact that once we all were insanely happy about Gagarin’s flight to space, and today we sometimes do not know who has flied and where to. The the same thing in figure skating with athletes who try quadruple jumps. Yes, today it causes a furor. But I guess that in three or four years, quadruples in women’s skating will become ordinary jumps.

When they’ll jump – in three years, sooner or later, I do not know. But if we do not want to be in a situation like our men, who came to the World Championships and in fact did not claim for medals, because their technical arsenal did not allow to do that, we should prepare now. In advance. It is better to be the first, to set the trend than to be in the role of catch-up. The most difficult thing is to wait and to catch up.

Yikes. Eteri is training up an army of quad jumpers. The rest of the world will have even less chance to beat them.

Then the rest of the world needs to catch up to them. Be as good as them. Better than them.
:respec::respec::respec::respec: x 1000

thank you! it's rare now-days to hear an opinion like yours from young people and even not so young..... the more common scenario are comments which suggesting some kind of "redistribution" or "punishment for succeeding" or explanations "they were lucky to be born in country X with body type Z, so it's just luck, they did not do it themselves".....

Maybe all competitors should have to pass blood tests and if their blood is low they are not allowed to skate. If it is that they are just that talented then good on them...but if they are being starved or abused they should not be allowed to compete.

How will the blood test help you decide whether someone is abused or starved?

You could measure iron or there are ways to measure what the body is using for basic metabolic functions that would give some idea about nutrition levels, but this assumes that the only athletes that will identified will be those being abused and not the athletes that happen to eat poorly. It seems pretty unlikely and unwieldy to try this kind of testing.

That would mean that you would exclude everyone who has medical condition anaemia, no matter whether they have been starved/abused or whether they just have it from any other reason? How fair is that? How far would you go with banning people with medical conditions, would you ban all athletes who have other medical conditions, or is it just anaemie that you consider so important?

And measuring nutrition levels, that’s quite discriminating towards those who chose not to eat healthy.

At the same time, skaters who are fed on diet milkshakes like Lipnitskaya was would slip through your net because they would have all the correct values in their blood, because the milkshakes have added all the nutrients. (It is just not healthy because the athlete is starving, but he/she would have the correct vitamins and minerals). Sadly, I don’t think there is a blood tets that can measure if someone is being abused.

can a doctor weigh in here? Would it be possible to tell? looking for solutions here..

No, it wouldn’t. But if “the rest of the world” which I presume means America  really wants Tutberidze’s girls to stop winning, I’m sure they will be able to come up with something. Like make it the ISU rule that the one with the most underrotations wins. Then finally they can have their dream podium of Nagasu, Wagner, and whoever is the third American spot holder.

No, not at all. With all due respect, you have misunderstood my comment. I do not want the ISU to level the playing field. I am against this, very much so! I believe very strongly that athletes who are excelling at what they do should continue doing just that. If the rest of the world is falling behind, then they need to catch up, but not by circumventing the system. The ISU should not feel pressured to level the playing field or water down the rules in order for other countries to keep up or to keep pace. You keep up and keep pace by beating the competition, if you can't, oh well. Try until you can.

anemia and malnourishment would show on blood tests.
I'm not sure what this has to do with my post. I'm talking about the proposed changes to the scoring system the ISU is currently dealing with and the pressure being applied for change as it pertains to heavily packed or loaded TES favorable programs, quads, etc. Not anything that you have mentioned or suggested.

I don't think adding sighs and tragic face to Chopin is like adding them to religious music, but it's unnecessary and looks dumb. She clearly has the goods to interpret the music straight, and she could have had a Hanyu Chopin-on-another-plane moment with this program and emoted up a storm in her FS. She and the judges are onboard, but to me, it's such a lost opportunity because it's 95% there in what she's doing already :wuzrobbed

..... but nobody is "circumventing the system"....... not Eteri and her group, for sure....

LOL, reading Zhulin and Tarasova's lips when Bobrova/Soloviev made their mistake.
https://media.giphy.com/media/l378xcOGUNBZZVLxu/giphy.gif
Zhulin said something like, uhhh, "harlot!" and Tarasova said someting like "derrier":D

Zhulin started to say "blya..." but then closed his mouth... :D
Tarasova loudly said "oops!" (in Russian: опааа)... without "zh" (Ж).
Here is the video, where she said it out loud @ 2:48 sec from start

I adore Medvedeva's AK LP dress from 2017 Rostelecom Cup :swoon:
I forgive the AK LP dress, because she is "Medvedeva"......

... here is a funny thing.... I read enough about Medvedeva loving the AK film with K. Knightley...... I get it! Med loves KN and the film.... and the girls look similar etc... https://i.ytimg.com/vi/-rOH5CbunuA/hqdefault.jpg

But she needs to chose, which to follow in terms of style, KN or the "AK - the film".

Med's red dress was spot on!

Med's black dress, is KN's dress at the NY RECEPTION/screening of the film, and not in plot of the film!!!

She (Med) had it right the first time, and now it's a dress from 3 decades later (than AK time line). The black dress has a neck and waste line fr early 1900's, just few year off before Erte/Poiret styles, does not fit historically....
