The Dance Hall, Part 4: To Helsinki & Back -- Seeking Rhumba Magic ...

Well, Chock/Bates's music is actual Latin... ;) It should be a good theme for them.

I've been obsessed with that song since it was announced. Although we do not know with what other song they will combine it. I really liked it with Joti and Kavita.

They were one of the skaters alongside Jason and Mirai asked to demo their short programs at the Team USA Media Summit, so it must be in pretty good shape. If you click the link provided offering more information, it says that their SD is a Marc Anthony medley to Aguanile, Que Lio(although they can't spell) and Vivir Mi Vida. It's a much more traditional choice than many of the other top teams, and I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I like it!! :rollin:

I remember when I wanted the Shibs to skate to "Vivir Mi Vida". I'm glad to see another team take it because I thought that song would be great for the SD.

I know we can't compare between different competitions, but I am going to anyway! :P

Virtue/Moir (Autumn Classic) and Papadakis/Cizeron (Finlandia) got exactly the same levels for their elements in their respectives short dances (Base Value 30.30).

Total Segment Score:
Virtue/Moir 79.96
Papadakis/Cizeron 78.09

TES:
Virtue/Moir 41.48
Papadakis/Cizeron 39.55

PCS:
Papadakis/Cizeron 38.54
Virtue/Moir 38.48

Will be interesting to see if that gap narrows as the season progresses to make for an exciting competition at the Olympics! :watch:

Absolutely hate the music of P&C'd short dance. Ugh!

The free I love though. But I can see them losing a lot to V&M in the short.

I like Stepanova&Bukin's FD. Not groundbreaking, they had several lifts problems, still, it's the best FD of the russians IMO.

Just catching up on the Finlandia short dance ...

I really like Hurtado/Khaliavin's Santana SD! Great sultry Latin feel, good chemistry, it looked very smooth. I think it's one of my favorite Latin SDs I've seen after Virtue/Moir and Hubbell/Donohue. (Actually, this is the first time I've seen this couple together & I like them quite a bit! Very well matched.)

I liked the music of Wang/Liu's SD, and they certainly put a lot of energy into it. But, I don't know, there's just something missing ... Their pairs height difference seems very noticeable here, and not in a good way, also a lack of chemistry/heat.

Stepanova/Bukin's SD . it is ... over the top or something. Subtlety is like an alien concept to this team.

I thought McNamara/Carpenter's SD looked smoother and better-executed than at Autumn Classic. I pretty much like this package for them--music & choreo pretty good and I love Lorraine's green costume. I think they just need to keep working it and improving it. I'd like to see Lorraine clean up her posture a little--her shoulders kind of slump at certain points, which doesn't look good in a Latin. I do like it overall though.

The video is blocked in my country, I wonder why? is it not Liebestraum?

But I liked Sara and Kirill FD.

My first big WOW moment in ice dance so far was Papadakis/Cizeron's stationary lift with the music in the FD. That blew me away. I was wowed by Scott and Tessa's rhumba pattern in the HPC clip, but that wasn't in competition, so I won't count it.

Ok I kind of liked the brits, west side story brits. Everything was done on point with the music, the program kept building and building.

You can tell Zhulin had nothing to do in the FD from Sara & Kiriil. Too bad because they don't have the coaching to get levels. Why are they staying there?

Everyone else missed their FDs. The danes made too many mistakes, as well as the russian or the french.
Won't talk about the atrocious skate from Popova&Mozgov. She can sell anything, but if you do focus on the blade? She's at Grushina's level of snow making. The poles ending AT LAST where they truly belong.

I kind of liked the back to the fifties FD of the canadians. Too young but cute.

Enjoyed most of the Free Dances in Finlandia today but three of them stood out for me:
1. Papadakis/Cizeron
Just a sublime dance for them in Olympic season. Loved every second of it with the exception of Guillaume's fall. They use the music perfectly, their skating seems so effortless, just :swoon:
2. The Danes
Still not over that citizenship drama, I so wanted to see them in Korea :fragile:
The dance is great, his twizzles are :gallopin1 but most importantly they both are :smokin:
3. Hurtado/Khaliavin's Don Quixote
In the beginning I was really nervous that Zhulin will give them something familiar to I/K's version back in 2010/11 but they proved me wrong.
No one is as good in Spanish dances as Sara (obviously), her hands are just to die for. Loved the spin and the step sequences, their lifts could be better but overall that was great.
I would really love to see them in Korea.

Thoughts on today's FD event at Finlandia:

McNamara/Carpenter
I felt bad for them. It was going pretty well until Lorraine's fall. Love their curve lift... The entry to it is very effortless. They gotta stop having these fluke moments though...

Stepanova/Bukin
Underscored. This program has a really lovely feel to it... Giving me warm Disney vibes. A couple of tiny technical glitches here and there but great debut, overall. Lots of room for growth.

Hurtado/Khaliavin
Really happy for them. Fantastic debut. They look like they're in good shape. I like her outfits. Both programs have lots of room for growth. Their Don Quixote is a great vehicle for them to be Spain's #1.

I checked the protocols and Hurtado/Khaliavin either didn`t get credit for their second choreographic element or forgot to do one. Weird. They lost at least 1 point because of that.

My first big WOW moment in ice dance so far was Papadakis/Cizeron's stationary lift with the music in the FD.
And the head throwback to the music during the stationary lift is just amazing. I couldn't imagine being able to do that without losing my balance and orientation.

So, I am really loving the Latin SDs this season! What does everyone else think? :saint:

<snip>

"Marc Anthony" = Marco Antonio Muñiz = very much Hispanic (or "latin" if you prefer) including his musical output. I think that's definitely in the spirit of the SD requirements. Don't let the NYC birthplace fool you.

I do agree with your implied premise that the ISU should have required that latin music be used. There's a huge universe of different Latin American-origin music that could have worked for rhumba and the alternate rhythm(s). I might be the only person on this forum who dislikes V/M Sympathy for the Devil SD and think they should get a music deduction, but I'll pick on them since they are high profile. And they're not the only ones who need to take a deduction. And for anybody who overlays a rhythm audio beat over non-Latin music to force-fit it to the requirements, make that deduction a -10. :angryfire In the interest of consistency, I was apparently one of the few last year that wanted to see penalties levied for using non-blues music for the SD pattern.

I think for a team stuck with similar style, P/C's FD this year is not even their best work. The choreography doesn't follow the music to have any change of tempo, just slow long stroke from beginning to end. Mozart feels like a complete piece and to build a home has more story telling. But this one, just a bunch of moves put together. What exactly are they trying to interprete?

Finally I could see S/B, what were they thinking choosing that music ?, Liebestraum is fine as it is, there was no need to add those awful voices :( :wall:.

I don't know the storyline, if there's some. All I know is they said these 4 years have been a cycle, therefore they started it and end it with a classical piece of music. To the interpretation, they worked with a ballet master on the choreography, so my guess is it's either inspired by a ballet or they just want to express the beauty of movement and beauty itself on the ice, like they always said that's one of their interests. :)

BTW, I still think the lifts of P/C are way too easy for their caliber. Even the new stationary lift, I've heard praises beforehand, and when I finally saw it. Meh, it's basically a variation of spin. I know the difference from spinning, but where's the Wow factor? I'm seriously disappointed.

See, this is my beef with their interpretation of music. They have a very narrow definition of "art" and skills to go with it. So instead of interpreting the music they even butch the piece to suit their need. I mean, this cut of MS shows no longer what Beethoven expressed with the original piece. Where is the building up to the fast and dramatic climax? Just because P/C can't do fierce skating with their slow long strokes, they completely change the structure of the music and even do stationary lifts and spins at the fast section to avoid falling behind the music. Is that really interpreting the music?

Sure you are. ;)

As I have stated previously many times, Papadakis/Cizeron's lifts get Level 4 with mainly +3 GOEs. It's not a question of whether you think they are easy or do not have the wow factor.

Got a complaint? Write a letter to the ISU Ice Dance Technical Committee.

I'm just expressing my opinion. You take it too far. And I don't think you are behaving maturely, even not for an Admin. It's just my observation. I'm not interested in the argument you are desperately starting.

Your "opinion" has no basis in fact. Sorry that you are upset about being called out on it. Have a nice day. :)
