Canadian Ladies 2017-18 season news & updates

I love the colour of the dress, and most of the design, but I personally don't like the collar bit (And I wish the illusion netting in the back matched her skin colour a bit more, but that may be due to a summer tan).

Just a hunch, but I think most of the back is going to covered in stones, so I don't think the colour being off is going to matter. Similar to her 2014 FS dress is my guess.

I kind of agree about the collar, but it could look very different once the beading is done, so I'll wait and see. Otherwise I like the cut of the dress very much. Can't wait to see the finished product!

Very interested to see what they put her in for Swan Lake. Hoping for a fantastic headpiece to go with it!:oksana1:

I really hope she skates well at Wild Rose. She was a hot mess at Victoria Day and she really needs to actually land a triple triple in the short and a full slate of triples in the long. Instagram videos are great, but until she lands that 3/3 in competition I fear SC will move on to other skaters. A second place finish at Wild Rose with two clean skates will go a long way to making her case. I don't believe Sarah Tamura is registered so this is Larkyn's big opportunity.

Can't say I feel the same. It's July.

She's going to be given every opportunity for that SC spot.

Much more for the international judges to love about her than Tamura, who hasn't exactly torn up the ice in her major internationals over the last year or two. Larkyn's spring international was strong, and she got her TES minimums. Add that to Austman being 4th in Canada, the SC spot is hers to lose in my mind. I'll worry a smidge about performance if she gets a B in September.. (likely) ....and then really focus on how she handles her grand prix debut. Until then the focus is getting comfortable competing again and feeling good about the programs.
 
So last season, there were 9 skaters who received senior international assignments: Kaetlyn Osmond, Gabby Daleman, Alaine Chartrand, Larkyn Austman, Kim Decelles, Micelle Long, Kelsey Wong, Eri Nishimura, and Veronik Mallet. Mallet withdrew from both of her events due to injury, and Wong and Nishimura did not even qualify to skate at nationals. Two other senior qualifiers had junior internationals (Alicia Pineault and Sarah Tamura).

Of those skaters, the following have the TES for Worlds: Osmond, Daleman, Chartrand, Austman.

Additionally, Long has the 4CC/Olympics minimum. Kim Decelles has the short program TES for 4CC/Olympics but had a disastrous free skate at her international last year so missed the free score. Wong and Nishimura didn't come close in either segment.

Mallet's scores from 2015-16 have expired, but she had no trouble getting the worlds minimums in previous seasons.

Pineault and Tamura only have junior scores, so would need a senior international this season in order to be eligible for Olympics/4CC.

Assuming the Olympic skaters do not compete at 4CC this year, we will need at least one skater to get the minimums in order to send a full team there.

In addition to Pineault and Tamura, several skaters have the junior worlds TES minimums: Emily Bausback, McKenna Colthorp, Aurora Cotop, Olivia Gran, Lissa Anne McCagehy, Amanda Tobin, Megan Yim.

Based on summer competition entries it looks like Colthorp and Tobin are moving up to senior domestically.

2018 nationals in senior could be stacked with skaters with international experience.

I can't put 'KO' and 'lunatic' in the same sentence, so we'll see what she comes up with.

I'm sure she'll rock it but I'm so meh with her safe music choices. More looking forward to what's coming out of the Daleman camp at this point.

Is Pineault registered for anything this year? Also, what's the most difficult jumping element she has landed (I mean LANDED...not UR and GOE of at least 0.00) in front of international judges?

Maybe I'm not tracking her well enough, but I have for better or worse compartmentalized her as a throwback to the 90s -- pretty to watch, two-triple long programs. If she's not planning six triples in the long this year she'll have a hard time staying on the radar as our depth continues to build.

I know it's been a while but she did land three clean triples in her international debut fall 2015 (lutz combo, loop, and sal combo).

I think Pineault struggled a bit last season with the move to seniors. I also don't think her music choices were the best. That said, I hope she comes out strong this summer. I would love to see a real race for that third spot.
 
Oh we do have a race for the third spot. Until we see them compete I would break the field down this way:

Tier A
Chartrand. The clear early favorite.

Tier B (a)
Austman, Mallet. Happy to send you if you skate for it. Would need to see at least one strong competition before Nationals (challenge doesn't count)

Tier B (b)
You are an accomplished pair skater with singles skills and credentials in your history. If you want to skate two events, have at it. We'll see how it goes.:p

Tier C
Tamura, Kim Decelles. You have talent but haven't rocked anyone's world so far. If you really bring it for most of the year we'll keep our minds open.

Tier F
Everyone else. Olympic selection depends on your book of work over more than just one season. To date, you haven't shown enough in competition. You have your work cut out for you to get some attention so good luck with that. You'll need to start the season with a cape on your back and an S on your chest, pretty much. Never say never, though!

So as many six are technically in it I think. That's pretty crazy for CAN ladies. If anyone wants to throw their name into the mix they are going to have to raise eyebrows real fast. Nationals performance alone I don't think would cut it.

Hmmm the bold part could be two skaters. Skate Canada would have to give a singles international to get the TES. I wonder ;)

Of course I'm on the Alaine train and I'd be quite disappointed if anyone but her made it. However there is something to be said for having the skate of your life at nationals and making the team. Body of work is subjective but really favours Chartrand at this point.

If Mallet gets an international this year I hope she will finally get a new ISU personal best total score. Her best remains from her very first international, 2013-14 season at Nebelhorn. And she wasn't attempting the lutz recently after the edge deductions became harsher. I remember when having the lutz was the bench mark for getting an international in ladies. Under IJS maybe not so much.

So in addition to the three with grand prix assignments already, I hope the following will get a senior international (or maybe two if they do well in the first): Austman, Tamura, K Decelles, Pineault, Mallet. Others with a shot if they show up at summer competitions landing stuff could be Deguise-Léveillée, Long, Yim. Or any current pairs skaters with previous international experience at the JGP and senior/4CC level :p.
 
So I am bit confused by the separation of Tamura and Austman. I see then on the same level with Tamura having the advantage of landing a clean 3/3 in the short multiple times as well a many, many clean 3lzs and significantly more successful international experience. Tamura struggled a bit at the end of last season, but she was training both junior and senior programs, putting out a lot more content than Austman (who has landed one clean 3lz in her career) and competing a lot more. Furthermore, didn't Tamura also end up on the podium of her spring international? Add to all that that Tamura is three or four years younger than Austman and will likely be around for 2022.

I will be happy with which ever one skates the best placing ahead. I just don't at this point see how Austman can be viewed as a better pick. I do think both should be sent to Salt Lake or a
European Sr. B to get a feel for how a true international panel will score them.
 
Curious to see Tamura's development over the summer. With someone so young and still developing it's hard to know what to expect in the fall. While she may end up having a better career overall when she's done compared to Austman, I just don't see her right now getting much love from senior international judges. That'll put pressure on her to place well in any competition she enters this year, barring a transformation. And that'll in turn hurt her chances.

It's a tough ask for her to overtake the more mature skaters in time to qualify for Korea. She's still in it though. I hope she raises eyebrows this fall and doesn't head in the direction of someone like Selena Zhao. Fingers crossed.

Designer Nick Verreos has pointed that out several times with numerous skating costumes. I noticed that with a lot of figure skating costume, the designer get's the nude mesh shade wrong.

Duhamel and/or Seguin? Hahaha, has anyone even been remotely rumour-ing that either of them would take such a gigantic risk? :lol: Or is there another pairs girl way down the list that has singles credentials that I'm forgetting about?

Hoping she comes into her own over the summer and does lots of off ice work and dance. It takes time to develop.
