Margo Robbie producing a Tonya Harding comedy (movie)

I so want to believe this happened exactly as depicted, right down to the suck my ****" line.
Whether it was actually said or not, there is such a ring of truth about Robbie's portrayal and what we know about Harding it is totally believable.

That scene makes me NOT want to watch this movie. There's something off with the tone here...I sensed it with those Margot Robbie in costume/make-up pics where they made Tonya's arms way too huge. And why is TMZ the only one getting the scoop on this film? I guess this is the sort of publicity this studio wants for this film.

Barring some of her other actions, what she is saying is true! She was a talented skater with a lot of potential. Her unproductive habits and some of the people around her were a bad influence that led to her downfall. I wish there was some way that she could coach in some way or another. Maybe she and Gordon McKellen could develop a partnership of some kind where they can impart their knowledge to young skaters. She should write a book.

Omg. This looks to be epic. That "suck my dick" was delivered perfectly.

I'm expecting this movie is probably going to exaggerate a lot of things like Tonya's size; not expecting much historical accuracy here...which is fine with me, we already have ESPN's 30 for 30 which covers things pretty thoroughly.

It has to be funny though. If it's not funny, it won't be any good. This is classified as a dark comedy, right?

I disagree that it HAS to be funny in that it has to play up the camp and laughs to be any good, but I get this is supposed to be a comedy and with Margo Robbie in it, it won't be a subtle or underplayed one either. I guess this is more akin to that movie The Bronze or something. Not really my type of comedy.

I can sympathize with Tonya on that front. The powers-that-be wanted her to dress a certain way, but how can anyone do that if they don't have the money?

......Looks like she is skating Tonya's 1990 SP.

You know, if that is the dress the Powers That Be bashed her on (and if it really happened the way Tonya says it did, which I, for one, highly doubt it was as drastic as she claims), its really not THAT bad. I mean it was 1990. Look at the dresses from that era. That's a fairly decent shot at hand-making your own dress to try to match the style at the time. The pink is a little garish, and the skirts on Tonya's dresses were never quite right for her body type, but its not horrendous or anything. Now her 1994 purple mess from Nationals, now THAT was horrendous!

If that is supposed to be 1990 Nationals, Harding was perfect in the sp and lost to Trenary who did an easier combination and supposedly had a mistake on the double axel.

I'm guessing the conversation where the judge/official refers to a "she" that has been around longer, and then Tonya says it shouldn't matter because she beat "her" today, is referring to Trenary.

OMG they even have the music. Minus the fact that the dresses are too short in the back, this is eerily spot on. I can't wait to see the 94 dresses/performances.

I think the short skirts are an exaggeration of the fact that some of Tonya's skirts barely covered her ass. Case in point, here is the routine that Margot was doing in the first, part Tonya's 1991-1992 free skate. You could barely call that outfit a dress...

She was coaching at one point. (Just not students who would be going to USFS qualifying events.) Apparently she managed to screw that up and the parents stopped sending their kids to her. I actually think she's better off staying away from skating. It's not a healthy atmosphere for some people and she seems to be doing much better now that's not trying to be famous or to get back into skating.

And uhm, since this is kinda a Tonya thread .... at 1991 US Nationals, in the podium pics, Tonya is holding up two silver bowls. Does anyone know what those two bowls are, and why she has two of them? I'd post a picture link, but I don't know how to make the link shorter than the eleventybillion characters it is. I think I may have asked this question before, but I sure don't remember the answer now. :shuffle:

That fringe skirt must have been some sort of very short lived style back then because even Yuka Sato had that in 1992.

What bugs me more than the wedgie-baring dresses is the wrong colour of the tights (very noticeable in the black dress)

I am not sure what you have heard about Godie McKellen? Or how he got into this thread. I knew his wife (now ex) as a little girl. Random his name is brought up

I noticed it was 1986 Skate America boards, 1986 dress style with 1991-1992 music.

He is also banned for life from USFS. That is probably why someone brought his name into this thread.

Was he? Didn't know that. I remember as a child hearing some rumors his wife at the time was his former student, but I was like 6. So I didn't know lol. When was he banned?

Nvm. Looked it up. I knew his marriage to Kath didn't end so well, but I didn't know he was banned.

I mean...just because they're both banned for life doesn't mean they want to work with one another. McKellen's reasons for being banned makes me want to think he shouldn't be in a position to impart his knowledge to young skaters, and I obviously don't know Tonya, but I doubt she'd want to be a part of a partnership with him.

They both have their "issues." I think the comment was meant more in jest than seriously.

Cleo1782, which of his ex wives did you know?

Just Kath. She was a fellow coach that taught at I rink I skated in when I was a kid in the suburbs of Chicago. She was my cousins coach. Very basic I think I skated there up to axel and sal. I was very young, but I vaguely remember some rumors about their marriage. She wasn't my coach ever. I would honestly have to ask my mom about it.

All I knew about her is she went by the name Kath Mckellen and was a successful former figure skater in the day and that they had two kids together. One of which skated and was friends with my little sister, but I couldn't for the life of me tell you her name right now.
If I am doing the math correctly, he was banned or under investigation probably around the time I skated there, but I was just practicing my jumps and spins lol! The rink has long since been disbanded and I haven't thought about her in at least 25 years so the name just rang a bell when brought up.
