Margo Robbie producing a Tonya Harding comedy (movie)

Here's an idea. When it comes out, don't watch it.

I think for an actor Margot Robbie's skating ain't bad.

I agree. It's not a new phenomenon to make a feature film made to be released for the theaters based on material that may have already been subject to dramatization in other mediums. Nor is it new for people to show interest in things that may have been old news but they themselves haven't really been exposed to it.

I mean look at the OJ Simpson story. That was subject to endless news stories and TV movie in the 90s, and then last season it was made into a miniseries and a ESPN documentary, both of which got critical acclaim and awards and viewers.

I don't plan to watch it. Watching someone mess up their life is not something for a comedy but that's just my opinion. I don't know who the Margot person is so I may be missing something .

It'll be refreshing to see it as a straight-up comedy instead of an overwrought Lifetime drama. Certainly wouldn't be the first time someone's story has been turned into a comedy.

I agree, Margot isn't half-bad on the ice! I'm very disappointed we won't see Sebastian Stan in tights, but...that's me so. :grope:

Wasn't there already a movie (t.v.) on this topic? Hasn't it been beaten to death already?

Yes, there was a made-for-TV movie. IIRC, more than one. There was also the Julie Brown comedy "The Attack of the 5'2 Women." Not to mention various documentaries and news specials.

Pictures of Margot on set, with the hair and a little bit of padding, she's looking a lot more the part.

omg, this is fantastic. she rocks the hell out of those mom jeans! :respec:

Yeah, Tonya was in better shape during this whole scene...

this physique looks about right for 1992 Skate Canada, though... :slinkaway

*dying* at that picture.

Maybe it's the fact that everything is sh*t right now, but I'm looking forward to this so much it makes me bizarrely giddy.

Same. I can't wait!

Good Lord! Is this movie necessary? How many time does this saga need to be exploited? :cat: :blah: This smacks of a colossal :gallopin1 ... :scream: :scream: And a comedy to boot?! Sheesh!

I have seen more than one Tonya/Nancy movie, including the porn one which included not one reference to skating. From the XXX Tonya/Nancy film, I was expecting scenes at a rink, sequined costumes on the floor or cameos from real skaters or coaches. It was not worth watching.

This story has been retold a few times now:
*Spunk: The Tonya Harding Story (1993)
*Tonya Harding Musical
*The Real Story of Tonya & Nancy (1994) - Adult
*I' Tonya

Why don't we make more movies about other skaters/coaches with interesting lives like:
  • Nicole Bobek
  • Brian Pockar
  • Peter Johansson
  • Richard Callaghan
  • Tai Babalonia
  • Randy Gardner
  • Christopher Bowman
  • Toller Cranston
  • Gary Beacom
  • Tiffany Chin -- Margaret Cho could play her mom
  • Oksana Baiul -- Lindsay Lohan could play her
  • Johnny Weir -- he could play himself

I think this movie is going to be big because of Robbie. Even someone at my work mentioned it.

Hahahaha, this is hilarious! One of my sons lives in Atlanta and is trying to break into the film industry - he's had a couple of gigs on this set as an extra. We were all laughing because he grew up in an ice rink watching his brother skate - I told him he had lots of experience for this, lol! When worlds collide!

Heidi Munger posted a few Instagram pics from Atlanta and tagged the movie. I wonder if she's going to be a skating double.
