Gymnastics News #15

The 5 men olympic team is certainly going to make selection complicated. It seems crazy - is it still 5 up 4 count in qualification?

It really favours all-around gymnasts, and GB has a decent number of those: Bevan, Wilson, Purvis, Whitlock, Baines... But it calls for teams to either put all their eggs in one basket and go for the team medal, forfeiting chances of individual medals because specialists will nab those, or pretty much throw the team medal away and focus on overall medal count: at the olympics, medal count is more important than what event you received the medal in. It will be interesting for sure.

Great Britain had three major World/Olympic gymnastic events in the span of six years in addition to the Commonwealth Games. That can't be underestimated (not in the context of home judging as I definitely don't believe they were overscored here, but in raising the level and performance of the team).

We're about 75 minutes from the start of the Women's AA. Any predictions about who is going to be standing on the podium next to Simone? I'm going to say Gabby and Steingruber are going to end up on the podium. I would love to see Iordache on the podium (she is my non-American competing today), but I know that she is injured, starting on the beam and ending on bars, so I'm skeptical. A podium finish for her would be phenomenal after the team qualifications.

Any thoughts? Am I crazy?

I really like the gymnastics of the GB men so I am pretty thrilled for them!

I would like to see Iordache on the podium today!

And I think that the pressure on Iordache is just ridiculous! She can't be the entire damn Romanian team. A lot of leadership of that team was lost when Ponor and Izbasa were injured. I am not at all worried about the test event. But the program is in trouble and needs an overhaul.

I'm actually a bit worried about the test event. It's a 6-5-4 format and the Romanians are lacking in depth and have a serious hole with UB.

I see Simone Biles as the winner and then a bloodbath between Douglas and Iordache for silver.

I actually think that the best thing that could happen to Larisa is Romania not making the team event. The pressure put on her for the team event is affecting her performance in AA and other events.

What's going on with the AA? The results page link isn't active.

Iordache is the first gymnast up on beam in the first rotation - her entire competition will be dependent on that one routine. :scream: :fragile:

I hope she hits, I would love to see her medal.

I predict:
1. Biles
2. Douglas
3. Steingruber (Iordache if she hits BB)

I really can't help it but I effing love Gabby Douglas and think she rocks. I hope she shows up to compete today.

I like the rock star introduction with each getting introduced as Olympic Champion, European Champion, World Champion etc.

Mitch and Christine are back on the live stream feed, yay. :cheer2:

ETA - or not argh. I heard them during the gymnasts intros, boo.

14.766 for Iordache on beam, she stayed on :)

15.3 for Gabby on vault

Very nice rudi from Steingruber, a bit piked down but almost stuck. 15.6

Simone is trying too hard to stick at this comp  but still a great vault. Small shuffles forward, it'll probably be 15.9

15.833 Simone VT

Saraiva falls twice on BB. :wuzrobbed Not a happy hobbit

Schaefer dismounts UB with the 96 compulsory dismount, reminding us of the great progress COP has brought forth. :COP:

My live stream is about 2 mins behind because I had to stop it for phone calls and I can't figure out how to catch up. Thanks for updates!

Nice vault from Ellie! Just a slight hop forward.

@Spun Silver - they're not beating the US, funny how the complaints seem to have lessened. :p </snark>

People still complain, and gym fans make snide comments, but why bother if nothing ever comes out of it. The 2000 situation happened only because Yang Yun accidentally revealed her true age on television. They tend to be smart about concealing it.
