Womens gymnastics is alien to me nowadays though. The Brits beating Russia in a world TF?! I'm so stuck in the 90's.
 
The USA on floor was a pleasure to watch. Simone is one of the all time greats.

GB winning bronze was a fantastic achievement. China finally getting out of the bronze spot. I really think they'll be the main rivals for the USA next year.
 
Who is Will Graves? Someone needs to tell him that he tries too hard with all the GIFs and "sass" on his Twitter. Also it's weird because he obviously doesn't know what some of the things mean and he keeps Tweeting at the underage American ladies.

Over the moon for the Brits! So glad they were able to pull it off, in part because seeing Russia on the podium with four falls would have left a bad taste in my mouth. But also because I love the kind of gymnastics they do and I always love a good hometown-underdog-pulls-off-a-medal result.

Canada appeared to have a couple of misses from Black on beam and Rogers on bars that cost them, although even if you replace both scores with prelims scores, they would still be a couple tenths short of Japan's score so it didn't actually matter in the final standings. So if they had to miss, probably better it was today than prelims. Also, I'm pretty sure that 6th is Canada's best ever finish at Worlds and also the first time they've made team finals at Worlds. It's only one place short of their (IMO) miraculous 5th place finish from London, so I think they can walk away pleased with this.

Now hopefully Ellie Black has got her beam miss out of the way and will hit in AA and EF. Would love to see another historic finish from her in at least one of those.
 
Congrats to the medalists. The only predictable outcome was USA, but I am thrilled for China and GB. Romania and Russia have work to do.

I am British and I thoroughly agree. I couldn't be bothered to watch, but I heard the news on BBC News 24. Whilst I am normally very pleased when Britain wins anything, I find it very hard to be enthused by this. At the end of the day, it's still ugly gymnastics (the code killed off real artistic gymnastics) - or zombie gymnastics as I tend to call it these days, given that the sport is essentially dead beyond any hope of revivification

RIP gymnastics.

Agreed, I just got excited that they could possible grab a bronze as was ahead of GB earlier.. but yes 6th in the world is amazing! Agreed also re: Black!
 
RIP Gymnastics? The rest of the world is catching up to the usual suspects and is RIP Gymnastics?

How can anyone not watch Simone's tenacity, amazing tumbling, mental fortitude, and not be in awe? Simone's power Gymnastics would have been appreciated in any era. I still see a lot of artistic qualities in today's Gymnastics.
 
Isn't there artistry in being able to to read the Code of Points and be able to manipulate it so that your programs emphasize all of your strengths so well that you are able to make the judges completely ignore your weaknesses? We Americans have mastered that. And yes, that's artful. That's not unexpected. We do that a lot, and believe me when I say that our ability to manipulate situations is not a compliment.

I would rather see everybody fall off each apparatus twice than watch some of our great "artists."
 
Dominant teams have been doing that for a long time.

BTW, who are the juniors coming up who may take spots for the Rio team? Are they great beam workers? No offense to the U.S., but Nichols and Raisman's beams were sort of hideous and/or awkward to watch. Simone isn't the greatest beam worker (she's no Soviet), but at least she had fluidity and transitioned her elements in and out of choreography without looking like a stiff mummy. The U.S. is just lucky that almost every team sucks at beam now. Also, Nichols' form on her Amanar got really fug at the end. It was almost Mustafina like.

BTW, people really shouldn't be shocked whenever Komova gives up. That's her MO. She performs as if she doesn't give a F, but not in a good way.

To be fair, that's not the meaning I would have derived from hearing that phrase, and I'm only 25, lol. Why must the world have their minds in the gutter?!

And to all the posters above me, I'm not going to apologize for being happy that a team with hit routines beat a team that fell on their butt four times. There's nothing artistic or good gymnastics about not being able to stay on the apparatus. And besides; the Russian's "artistry" is as ratchet as anyone else's these days. Have you SEEN Afan's floor?! Sorry not sorry.

THANK YOU. There are some gymnasts who still pay attention to artistry (like the Dutch talking about the character of their floor exercise) but artistry is more than just having dance/ballet training drilled into you at Round Lake since you were 5 years old. Believe me, I love great dance and musicality too, but I'm absolutely missing what artistry the rest of the world has in this day and age. FX generally is just retched; and beautiful movements here and there on beam isn't the same as actually having choreography with real meaning behind it. To be balanced, I'm not sure why people are fawning over Nichols FX "dance" so much either. Sure she's controlled and isn't Skinner or Aly, but she doesn't really dance or move well outside of the dozens of times she's fanning herself.
 
I just watched USN's coverage and the medal ceremony. I didn't know before now that the alternate medals as well. Has this always been the way? Someone please explain.
 
Just like the COP or the order of team/individual Worlds in an Olympic cycle before 2005, I don't think the FIG is very consistent with it. I know in the past, while alternates have some times been allowed to stand on the podium, they didn't get medals so USAG made replica medals for alternates as a sort of consolation prize for surviving Marta.

I think prior to this quad FIG didn't recognize alternates as being full members of the team...USAG has been giving duplicate medals to their alternates for years, but I think only recently has the FIG been considering them full teams and giving them medals and allowing them on the podium.
 
The united states is just so dominant. Its like every country wants to be United States and copy all they do on every apparatus.

So apparently, after TF Komova was rather :drama: and made some snide comments on social media about the Americans being on steroids.. Then deleted it when a Russian coach starting intervening and replying. :shuffle:

They are barely even allowed to eat let alone take performance enhancing drugs :p those pills = calories and extra mass.

You guys fell FOUR times! Komova was half of those falls. And then at the end of it.. You were smiling!! Maybe they are too drunk to think logically.

Really clean, and can be about .2-.3 better IMO! I'd love to see her win a medal here, she's perhaps the most underrated gymnast on bars the past 10 years.

She's due for a medal soon, I think she's going to Rio based on TF and what she's qualified for here. If Kocian were to win bars, the Olympic team could already be just about a done deal.
 
I don't really think Gabby has been underrated on bars. She just was in a quad when the top bar workers were really, really good. She made the Olympic EF; she just never had as much difficulty to challenge for a medal (she was out of competition the years when she could have).
 
She's been one of the only top bar workers who haven't eventually won a medal though. Basically the entire field in the 2012 final have won a world medal now, and even Ana Porgras has a medal on bars from 2009. She's been competing at the worst points and then doesn't really hit, but this year I think she could win one.

I'd like Komova to win but she always seems to consistently find a way. :shuffle:

I wouldn't be surprised to see Spiridonova win, maybe Yang Yilin. I think this is Gabby's best shot ever to win a bars medal.

Absolutely - people really have glorified visions of the past. The top routines of today match those of the past in every way.
And it frustrates me that people have preconceptions regarding artistry and form based on body-type. If you look at photos of Dowies, they point their toes through their tucks, arabians and dismounts like no other. I felt the Russians were generously scored yesterday - with Seda on beam and Afan on floor in particular. And across the whole competition, I felt like the same routines performed by Japan or GB would have scored 0.5 less apiece! That's a massive difference in the total. Becky's beam would have been about 14.5 and Tinklers floor about 14.8 if performed by Seda and Paseka respectively!
The notable exception to that is vault where the judges scored almost consistently across the evening - well done to them.

The thing about the past is that only the best bits are remembered, and we forget those came few and far between. Everyone remembers Aurelia Dobre, but she was once in 1987. Everyone remembers Omelianchik's floor, but then we've had some great floors in the past decade too. Just not one every year - and that's normal.
 
@millyskate I agree with you, but have to admit that it took me a while to appreciate the extension of some of the more powerfully built gymnasts. The sport has always favored "long lines" and I could see it in last night's scoring. To my eyes, similar routines with similar amplitude were score higher if the gymnast was traditionally built. Geez, I can remember people dissing Cathy Rigby for not having the "right" body. It only got worse with Retton.
 
I honestly don't think body type equals artistry. Honestly, I'd settle for straight legs and musicality at this point. Musicality is sorely missing. And let me tell you, I didn't really think Mary Lou Retton was that great and she certainly didn't deserve to win the AA in 1984. But she was a powerhouse without a lot of flexibility with straight legs and musicality. I loved her floor routine.

And Fragapane doesn't have the lines and is very much a powerhouse. But she connects with her music. That, to me, is very important.

I agree. I don't need Russian style artistry (but man it's amazing when done right and authentically), but I do appreciate great form, extension, musicality, some sort of fluidity, and performance. I think all body types and dance styles are capable of that and are guilty of not emphasizing that. Shushonova was a power gymnast who did not have the willowy build of Mostepanova or other Soviets, but her basics and form were beautiful and she performed the crap out of her routines. Kocian has more of a traditional build, but she can't point her toes at all and isn't a gymnast who emphasizes any of the aforementioned qualities to any significant degree.
 
I loved Shushunova. Loved her. Powerhouse with basics. She also didn't have the bubbly personality and was much more reserved. She was amazing and is totally underrated.
