I agree with your sentiment about not posting hate in uber threads; however, I didn't post anything hateful. One can be a fan of Adelina's (as I've been since before the Olympics) and understand that the whole thing was negative for her career, and maybe herself personally. Ultimately, the medals are worthless and I think a true fan would care more about the process of a skater becoming the best skater and person they can possibly be. Did the Olympics do that for her? Really? Before Sochi she was a talented, promising skater needing a little more work but with a bright career in front of her (in my opinion). She went immediately from that to her career being over. The end. No other major titles, no more competition programs for everyone to see, no going out on top at the height of her abilities as the best skater she could possibly be. Nothing. Just a 17 year old girl who herself gave it her all and delivered, but whose well-being was sacrificed when shady, corrupt, grown adults USED her to further their own agendas. If someone thinks it was all worth it, that she gets her 15 minutes of fame, money, dancing gigs, whatever, well that's why I said it's a deal with the devil. The questions will just follow her all throughout life. Will she go around thumbing her nose at the world and trying to overcompensate and prove herself to doubters? Will she develop a complex where she can't handle criticism, because of this incident? And she distances herself from anyone who isn't completely 100% on her side at all times? The fallout from Sochi can go much beyond the skating world, just ask Oksana Baiul. If anything, that's where I'll be rooting for Adelina the most -- off the ice. She's still young, and I hope she'll grow into a mature well-rounded woman, and be able to separate her outstanding performance from the value of the medals and just focus on that
And btw, whose to say how Adelina's career might have turned out otherwise? Maybe over the next several seasons she would have kept getting better and better. Maybe she would have become world champion. Maybe she would have won OGM in 2018 without controversy. All of that would have been preferable, of course.
