Wildfires 2021

My morning email had more reports on the Calder Fire. As I suspected, now that it is threatening lots of homes, there is much more reporting about it.

I'm pretty sure that's behind a paywall so here are some excerpts:

SIERRA-AT-TAHOE — As the sun rose Monday morning, the two-mile road into Sierra-at-Tahoe was surrounded on both sides by blackened forest land burned by the Caldor Fire, and the hillsides up into the resort’s wilderness were charred.

Still standing, however, were many of the lodge’s major buildings, along with ski lifts in their immediate vicinity.

That was the encouraging news Monday morning, as fire crews continued to stage in the resort area during their attempts to slow down the blaze. By Monday morning, it had burned 177,260 acres and was 14% contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection.

Barton Memorial Hospital officials also were notifying families of patients that they were being transferred to “regional partner facilities” and leaving its emergency room “open for health needs only,” according to a social media post.

A nice article about saving animals from the Dixie Fire:

When Pits R’ Us All Breed Rescue and Adoptions folks received an emergency request last week to shelter animals being evacuated from the devastating Dixie Fire, they threw open their doors without question.

That’s how four horses, an estimated 15 sheep and innumerable chickens, guinea hens and ducks came to temporarily settle on a ranch in Vacaville.

Such as the Dixie Fire, which has burned more than 750,000 acres in Butte, Plumas, Shasta, Lassen and Tehama counties since July 14; resulted in mass evacuations; and, as of Saturday, was only 48 percent contained.

Pits R’ Us is asking for the community’s support in taking care of the new animals. Any and all donations are appreciated to keep them fed, comfortable and happy.

Requested are:

  • Fly spray
  • Fly bags
  • Jolly balls
  • Water troughs
  • Stall Mats
  • Hay grass and alfalfa
  • Fly masks
  • Halter/leads
  • Refill spray/sprayers
  • Salt blocks
  • Treats
  • Enrichment toys
Western Ranch and Pet Supply at 103 Aegean Way in Vacaville is the contact point. The rescue has an account there so donations of items or finances can be made there.

Or, call Western Ranch at 448-6568 to have a donation placed on their account. All donations are tax deductible.

Donations can also be sent via Venmo at @pitsrus or PayPal at [email protected].

Getting a free air purifier if you qualify:

Under the air district’s new program, to qualify for a free air purifier, people must be on Medi-Cal, the state’s Medicaid health insurance program, and have a diagnosis of severe asthma or other respiratory problem from their doctor.

Bay Area residents who qualify and are interested in receiving a free air purifier should send an email to [email protected] or call the following numbers based on their counties of residence:

Alameda County – 510-383-5178 (English) or 510-383-5185 (Spanish)
Contra Costa County – 925-839-0193
San Mateo, San Francisco, Santa Clara Counties – 503-884-7896

We have gotten Barton memorial patients at our hospital, but can’t take any in the ICU because we’re filled up with C19 patients

The Caldor Fire is getting under control. (Finally.) Interestingly, the ski resorts are using their snow-making equipment to help fight the fire and keep their resorts from burning down:

But only a few miles inland from the famed alpine lake, firefighters struggled to keep the 204,000-acre blaze — still just 20% contained — from destroying hundreds of homes and two of California’s most famous ski resorts, Heavenly and Kirkwood.

At both resorts in the hills south of Lake Tahoe’s shores, workers ran dozens of machines normally used for snow-making around the clock, pumping out millions of gallons of water to soak buildings, ski lifts and forests in a high-stakes attempt to halt the advancing fire and even raise the humidity levels around the imperiled areas.

Snow machines, also called snow guns, can pump up to 150 gallons of water a minute at pressures up to five times a typical a fire hose. Some are mounted on poles, and others are portable. They draw water from reservoirs and wells on ski areas — Heavenly has two reservoirs, one of which holds 50 million gallons.

Firefighters made progress against the monstrous Caldor Fire, and the weather Thursday began to cooperate with them a bit as big winds died down and temperatures dipped into the 30s overnight.

The blaze, which has burned since Aug. 14, grew to 210,259 acres by Thursday morning, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. Crews have contained 25% of it.

Crews continue to guard fire lines in the Christmas Valley in their attempts to protect thousands of homes in the area, and they appeared to be succeeding. Air tankers also are expected to be dropping retardant and water on the blaze today.

This is a mess. My kids have a house in Tahoe, but it is on the other side of the lake. Still, i would imagine getting there (and it is a long weekend) would render it impossible.....or at least really dumb!

Not impossible. Just go north on 80. But dumb? It depends but even if they are where there is no risk of fire, would it put a burden on the surrounding communities? Probably because you know all of Tahoe is pulling together to stop the fires and probably don't have the resources to deal with anything else. So unwise anyway.

The problem with these big fires is they look like they are getting closer to containment, but all it would take is fierce winds whipping up again, and then they overrun the containment lines. You cannot stop a wind-driven wildfire no matter what resources you throw at it. It's really too early to call, and the winds habitually come up later in the season so they are not at all out of the woods (ha-ha) unless we miraculously get some early and heavy rain. I'm enjoying the healthier air, though. Had to drive into town to do shopping and it was still very smoky in the valley, but up here in the hills it's almost clear.

I have smelled smoke around where I live every day since I started this thread, even on the days when the Air Quality Index was "Good." :(

Caldor Fire is slowly being contained:

The speed of the Caldor Fire continued to slow down Thursday night into Friday morning, and the air quality improved for fire crews who have inhaled smoke for weeks.

As of Friday morning, the blaze had burned 212,907 acres, according to to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The fire is 29% contained.

How long before tourists can return to South LakeTahoe? CAhas lifted evacuation order but how long before people will want to visit the area?

It seems there are new fires.

They are still warning tourists away while recognizing that this is going to hurt the area economically.

The area is pretty much flattened. I am 4 hours south of Tahoe. And the air is so awful here. It must be unbreathable up there. My Daughter and her family have a house at the other end of the lake (where the fire isn't). They were going to go up there for the weekend.......but there was no air up there.

What a tragedy. Thanks PG&E

AirNow.gov was showing yellow and green for air quality (AQI around 51) which is pretty good. I suspect all the smoke and bad air has drifted to other areas. I wouldn't feel safe to go there until all the fires are gone.

There are so many odd things in life. I just looked up AQI in South Lake Tahoe and got this:

Air Quality Index

Unhealthy
Everyone may begin to experience health effects; members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects.

Funny. AirNow.gov is showing green and yellow.

Don't quite know what to say. I have tried several other sites, plus talked to people/family with homes up there. They all say it is horrid.

That happens when the winds shift. The last time I was in that area when smoke from wildfires was everywhere, there might be a few hours each day where the smoke cleared out in the So. Lake Tahoe area. But most of the day, the air was horrible because the wind would shift right back.

It is my understanding that the wind blows away the smoke you see, but it does not blow away the harmful particulates in the atmosphere.

Officials warn days with blue skies can still have bad air quality

I trust the people who live there.
Me too. The ones I know say don't come here! I can't imagine who you are speaking to.

My son-in-law's family has had a house in Squaw forever. They aren't going. The air is not breathable. These people are not wimps. SIL was on the ski team for years....skiing at an Olympic level. Their friends (One with an OGM) same thing. Don't go there.

What is totally amazing to me is why would you go there? Tahoe does not need you. Does not need tourists, gawkers, or whatever. Find another place to vacation.........maybe New Orleans (just kidding - but I bet you wouldn't go there). Go to Mammoth, Arrowhead, Big Bear. They are great vacation places.

If you know anything about disasters, or have had the awful fotune to weather a fire, a flood, etc....you wouold understand that there are important and life saving endeavors happening. What disaster areas need is for people who have no business there say away.

I am not going to Tahoe. Don't worry.

We live very close to Lassen Volcanic National Park, which is part of the Dixie Fire burn area. We had about a half inch of rain last night according to our rain gauge so the fire area should have gotten some too. It should slow it down in some of the areas, anyway, although this fire is a long ways from being over. It was supposed to be a dry lightning storm, but they were wrong about that. No lightning and just rain - yay!
