It is a foregone conclusion that Nathan Chen will repeat as US national champion.

Silver and bronze are wide open, with some strong contenders.

Which two men will win those medals?

Pick Two in this poll.

Rippon & Brown. However, I really want Max there but I can’t see it happening, his nice outfits and tight pants deserve to get to the Olympics

If Max lands his jumps, he can overtake everyone except Chen and Rippon. Brown made it to the GPF but he has not been consistent this season and he doesn't have a quad.

I went with Brown and Zhou. I think Brown will find his way onto the podium and Zhou has the highest scoring potential. I know Vincent has been struggling so far this season but it wouldn't surprise me to see him skate like he did at last year's nationals and finish 2nd.

I think it will be Adam and Jason based on how the GP season went and last year's Worlds (even though Max had the far tougher fields in his GP events than Jason). I can see the USFS doing a repeat of what happened with Mirai in the last Olympic season if Max places third over Jason at Nationals.

I guess if Jason were to somehow really bomb (which I don't expect) and ends up 5th or 6th it might be a different story. And even then, I think Max would have to skate lights out with a 3 quad long....

I'm pretty certain this will be Max's last season (although I don't think he has stated that, it's just my assumption) and Jason has said he'd like to try and continue until 2022. So I'd love to see Max get that opportunity, but it will take him skating great and potentially Jason (or Adam) somehow faltering, IMO, for that to happen. Sigh.

Why would they want to send Jason if he has no chance of standing on the Olympic podium even if he skated clean? Jason has to hope that his rivals bomb big time in order to stand on the podium.

I would love for it to be Grant or Ross :shuffle: but I suspect a combination of Adam, Jason, or Max.

As much as I like Jason, I think he's going to make too many technical mistakes and it'll go to Rippon and Aaron, in that order.

I don't think that other US guys have a realistic shot at the podium in Pyeong Chang anyway so it's a weak argument. Olympics are not just about winning or garnering medals, otherwise it would be pretty deserted event in many sports.

Vincent for example has multiple (iffy) quads but that's the only quality that makes him stand out. So yeah, everyone bar Nathan from US would need the favourites to bomb / semi-bomb + rise to the challenge to sniff the individual medal.

If he's one of the team members, he stands a better chance of getting a medal in the team event. He already has a team bronze from Sochi.

For the individual competition yeah he has no chance of a medal unless it's a total meltdown event.

This is also my gut feeling. :fragile:. There was an interview mid-off season (the GS one) that gave me some hope, where the wording he used implied he intended to continue, but that IceTalk episode where he spoke at length about creating memories was a pretty obvious one. And he's just graduated college today, so if he's looking to go on and do his masters (like he's always said he wanted to), then...the timing fits.

Why does Latvia bother to send Deniss Vasiljevs? Why would Malaysia bother to send Julian Yee? Why does Uzbekistan bother to send Misha Ge?

All three of whom I would rather see skate than many who, I suppose, stand a chance to be on the podium.

Whatever you think of any of the US skaters, this particular argument has always made zero, nada, zilch sense to me.

Nathan had a rough season but is improving so he is likely to win.
I voted Rippon and Brown but Rippon seems much more confident this season so far. So, it could be a toss up between Brown, Aaron and Zhou (the ice is slippery, etc. etc.)

edit: spelling

Rough season? He won both GPs and the GPF!

What I meant is if Max is 3rd, and Jason is 4th at Nationals, I don't think Max should be shafted by Jason, as Jason isn't a medal contender for the Olympics in the individual event and hasn't been on the podium at Worlds. However, if Jason is 3rd, and Max is fourth, then of course Jason deserves to go to the Olympics. US is a medal contender in skating, therefore they send athletes who will bring home a medal. For other countries with no shot at winning a medal in skating or other sports, the athletes are just happy to be participating in a once in a lifetime event.

Yes I agree that Max should go if that's the case.
