Just six days before his untimely death, Denis Ten, who dreamed of becoming a filmmaker, had revealed his entry for the Screenlife Project competition held by famous Hollywood director Timur Bekmambetov. The athlete had pitched an idea for a film about the relationship between a hearing-impaired girl and a speech-impaired young man.

After his tragic passing, the figure skater’s fans came together to request that his idea be made into a reality. On July 20, Timur Bekmambetov, whose films include the 2016 remake of “Ben-Hur” and the 2008 action movie “Wanted,” responded by saying that he intended to make the film proposed by Denis Ten.

“This is an enormous tragedy,” remarked the director. “We will try to make his ideas a reality, so that we can dedicate a film to the talented Ten.”

I've been trying not to think about this today, because every time I do I start crying. Now it's starting again...

I'm posting because I watched the news tonight, both at 10pm and 11pm, first the Canadian channels and then the American channels. There was nothing. Which made me angry, he's a two-time World medallist and an Olympic medalist. This happened within the last 24 hours, right? Or am I not understanding correctly the time this happened and his story was reported last night?

I'm so gutted.

Oh, I know exactly how you feel. This wonderful young man DESERVED to have his death reported on Canadian and US news channels. He achieved so much and did a lot of good for his country in his extremely short life. But, sadly, it seems the media is far more interested in Trump's latest moronic tweet or double talk while this tragedy isn't worth their time. But, we care ... millions of figure skating fans around the world care. And, it seems he had MANY friends in the skating world and they ALL care. And, his family and loved ones care deeply. So, I guess that is all that matters. He was truly loved and will be dearly missed.

Truly? It appeared on both the ABC and Sydney Morning Herald websites today. It even appeared on my Twitter "moments" feed.

I saw it on NBC news in the US last night. There were also articles in The NY Times, ESPN, E News, etc.

This is still so unbelievable. Like others, I thought they just stabbed him once so they could get away. But it seems it was much worse. 😭 I do hope hope both men get the punishment they deserve.

I first saw him at Skate Canada in 2009. He was so young and his potential was obvious. I will always remember his performance at the 2013 Worlds where he actually beat Patrick in the free skate.

I can't remember if he said it the K&C or if it was backstage, but when he realized he had won the FS, his first reaction was "I beat Patrick????????", and the look on his face was pure elation. He didn't even care what colour the medal was, although many others did. It was very sweet, I thought. In that moment I realized how genuine he was.

This entire thread is beautiful and I have read every single word and will continue to do so.

Lori Nichol is quoted in Pj Kwong's opinion piece yesterday: https://www.cbc.ca/sports/olympics/...figure-skating-community-devastated-1.4753455
"He was to have arrived in Toronto next week to choreograph a short program. I was so looking forward to Denis's genius on the ice and his infectious laughter, and our deep conversations," said a devastated Nichol.

"I can't believe that no one will ever have that brilliant light again. We must now do everything we can to celebrate everything he did for skating, his family, his country and anyone blessed enough to have known him. It's an unimaginable loss to his family, skating and the world. I don't even know how to express my heartache for his family and his mother Oksana and for Denis's coach, Frank Carroll."

From the heart we express our condolences to the family, relatives and friends, as well as the people of Kazakhstan, in connection with the tragic loss of pride of Kazakhstan, figure skater Denis Ten.

Loved by many fans around the world, Denis Ten, with his outstanding skills and excellent qualities, maintained a strong friendship with the Japanese figure skaters and fascinated the Japanese. Our people highly appreciate his contribution to friendly relations and strengthening of mutual understanding between Japan and Kazakhstan.

Many Japanese figure skaters have already expressed their condolences, the citizens of Japan are also deeply saddened by this tragic event.
Brilliant achievements of Denis Ten and a charming personality will remain forever in our memory.
  Let him rest in peace.

I remember prime minister Abe once mentioned friendship between Denis and Mao (who were rink mates under TAT as well as students of Lori) for emphasizing friendship between these two countries when he visited Kazakhstan. Denis was such a precious young man even as a nongovernmental diplomat. He was a beautiful skater who had a great musicality with smooth edgeworks, an artist who loved musics and pictures, a funny boy, and a devoted athlete. He focused on skating anywhere he trained. He was a brave man who faced tremendous pressures from his country. He loved his fellow skaters and his country. And he was loved by people. Wish people will not forget this wonderful man. My condolences go to his family and friends at this difficult time.

I had a conversation with my about to be 16 year old skater girl this morning. I told her, even though you are a black belt, if someone has a weapon and wants to rob you, just give them the watch/car/diamond earrings. Things can be replaced. Your life can't. Obviously, if they are trying to abduct you, thats a whole other thing. Poor Denis. To die for a car mirror. The world is a poorer place. Safe travels and smooth ice....

I also trained in self-defense as a teen for several years. You practice fighting against opponents who are armed and often in multiples and the first thing you learn is unless you are trapped....run.

Apparently the picture Europe on Ice posted was fake. In this article they write that just one of the attackers got caught so far and his name is also different http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/art...held-killing-Olympic-figure-skating-star.html

Denis was such a small guy - why in the world would 2 presumably larger men feel compelled to attack him in such a brutal fashion? I suppose there can be no logical explanation where murder is concerned. They didn't know it was his car, but did they recognize who he was when he approached them?
