lol idk why we're arguing about jason's petition he has yet to submit save your strength you'll need to wuzrob plenty of people this week

How about people wait and see if Jason submits a request for Worlds before getting their knickers in a twist.
LOL - come on, we've got to stake out our positions on the subject ahead of time so that we can proclaim our consistent view on it when the time comes. ;) And it's a sort of slow FS news day - Skate Canada provided little controversy in their ISU Championships assignments.

Jason hasn't been skating well lately, but he was top 6 at last years Worlds. It's definitely a long shot if he wants to try to petition for Worlds this year but let's say for the sake of argument that he does well at a test skate. I don't see a problem sending him. If another US man is better / could place better at Worlds than Jason, then they need to prove it. As it stands, the ranks of world-beating US men are pretty thin

I hope Naumov gives it a shot. Jacob is still young, doesn't have a quad and other skaters (e.g. Camden, Naumov) who are inconsistent are struggling because they struggle with competing with both a quad and a 3a.

Jacob said at the GPF/JGPF that he is working on a quad and hopes to have it ready by Nats. We'll see what he shows up with this week.

He's been really consistent in his international scores this season -

Cranberry Cup Jr - 218.21
JGP Ankara - 220.25
JGP Ljubljana - 229.46
Tallinn Trophy Sr - 225.60
JGPF - 227.38

That's a level of consistency the other guys could only hope for, IMO. And his SP SB is actually higher than Torgy's (by .73), but good enough for 13th best among the likely men at Worlds (Torgy would be 17th, but he's also been lowballed, IMO and could easily be as high as 9th or 10th in the SP).

I'd rather have Jimmy go instead of Camden or Naumov if Jacob doesn't get the spot - he's scoring in the high 220s-low 230s range consistently this fall.

With Jason potentially out (of contention for a World Championship spot), I just hope that the younger men can step up to the plate. This is a great opportunity for one of them, but I am worried because Olympic spots are on the line.
If Ilia wins Worlds (gold medal) how many spots does that provide?

Depends on how the 2nd & 3rd men place.

Scenario 1 - the 2nd man is 12th or higher & 3rd man makes the FS - 3 spots confirmed
Scenario 2 - the 2nd man is 12th or higher, but the 3rd man doesn't make the FS - 2 spots confirmed & 1 entry at the Olympic Qualifying Event
Scenario 3 - the 2nd man is 13th or lower & the 3rd man finishes wherever - 2 spots ONLY
Scenario 4 - the 2nd & 3rd men fail to make the FS - 1 spot confirmed & 1 entry at the Olympic Qualifying Event

ETA - Scenario 2 & 4 only apply to the Olympics.

It's a combination of the top two placements, so his gold medal earns three at Worlds only if he is the only man competing. If more than one Man competes, at least two, regardless of where #2 places. If #2 places 12th or higher, then three spots.

For the Olympics, if he is the lone skater, then one spot plus one entry into the qualifying competition. Same if there are three men, and Malinin is the only one to make the FS.

If two compete, and #2 is 12th or higher, then two spots plus one entry into the qualifying competition. If #2 is 13th-24th, two spots.

If three compete, #2 is 12th or higher, and #3 makes the FS (top 24), then three spots. If three compete, #2 is 12th or higher, and #3 doesn't make the FS, then two spots plus one entry into the qualifier. If #2 is 13th-24th, two spots.

Like Isabeau, I'm sure he will be named to the Worlds team based on his result from last season, pending monitoring in late February.

That pending monitoring is huge. His season has been really rough. Although I prefer Jason's skating over the other guys, he needs to be deserving of a spot and likely to contribute to earning berths for the Olympics. Given his recent history at Worlds, it would have been one thing if he had rough competitions early in the season, but showed good form at Nationals. However, that's not the case. I'm hoping that the other guys don't give us a splatfest and that they make it easier to select them to the World Team. (I did say "hoping," not "predicting.") Honestly, I'm happy that Jacob finished so well at the JGP Final and am looking forward to seeing him develop, but if he's considered a leading contender for a Worlds spot, that doesn't say a lot about the depth of the American men.

NBC will not be happy. Jason and Isabeau are fan favorites.

I am not happy.

Honestly, I think it really depends on how the men skate this week.

If Ilia and two other men score 275+, I would say that Jason will probably not be named.
Clean Jason will still be 275-280 internationally (his last two world championships scores).

I can see a situation where only Ilia hits 275+, Torgy is around 260, and the other men are well below. And if that's the case, Jason has a good case for being named to the world team at a home world championships.

The only problem being, Jason wasn't skating clean this fall - nowhere close to it.

There's no easy answer here for the USFS unless the men step up now that there is a clear opportunity to do so.

If he doesn’t fall brown PCS is all 9’s! And previous competitions where he placed in top 10 have been with as little as one triple axel! In the fall competitions he was ur city as well as popping. He can only ur triple axels not flips and toes! He would make the most sense to send but only if went to a competition where his non axel jumps were clearly marked as rotated.

If the Fall season performances are any indication, I honestly cannot fathom anyone besides Torgy and Sanchez landing on the 2nd and 3rd place spots in either order. If these two can medal AND match their best Fall season performances this week in Wichita, I see no reason for them to be denied those tickets to Boston.

Your thoughts...

Has there been any word yet about whether or not Jason Brown is officially petitioning for a World Spot? I heard no mention of this in the broadcast.

Smarter he isn't.

I think Jason really needs to rethink his training setup and how he's going to approach the Olympic season if he's going to make the team. That means he needs to start now, not focus on worlds now.

His biggest problem this season seems to be that he thought he could be ready for the GP with minimal prep, which isn't realistic for anyone no matter how good they are. So more prep time may mean better results next season.

It will be interesting to see who is named to the team after the free tomorrow. Maybe they’ll give 4CC’s to Jacob. He’s getting there. I would love to see him win the JGP.

I can't imagine them sending Jacob to 4CCs over Jr. Worlds unless he's making the senior world team.

This is not like Sarah who hasn't skated junior all year and would need to modify her FS.

USFS needs Jacob for junior worlds to earn the max JGP spots for next year and hopefully 3 spots for 2026 junior worlds, if Martynov or Blackwell can do well enough. Even if he managed to make the top 3 at nationals, I think they would still send him to junior worlds and worlds (like Ilia in 2022) and send the fourth place finisher to 4CCs.

I think that's likely. Again, Sarah's different because she doesn't even have a junior FS, so going to Jr. Worlds would be way more work for her than for Jacob.
