U.S. Men 2021-22 season news & updates

Having 2 skaters with the same criteria and picking Jason is the very definition of giving him the spot. It doesn't mean he was undeserved but he was given it. I don't see anything wrong with continuing to say he was given the spot. It's exactly what happened.
In the federal government, when a selection (aka hiring) committee chooses a candidate from among several qualified applicants, announcements say the candidate has been “selected,” not “given the job.” I think it’s a slightly more neutral way of saying it.

Selection is the word used by the selection/hiring committees. Common English usage says "They gave me the job". I'm not the damn selection committee. I'm going to use normal English.

Isn't it a bit embarrassing for Jason that even Donovan Carrillo can land a clean quad? :sheep:
And you aren't helping by being an ass. We know Jason can't land a quad. He does a lot that others can't do. Stop poking the beehive to the point that people can't use normal words without people getting upset.

I don’t really have an issue with the word itself, so I’m not going to argue with that. I’m annoyed by the implication that he should do them a favor by going to Worlds, because they did him a favor by selecting him for the Olympic team. They didn’t do anything except follow their selection procedures. If they thought Jason’s presence at Worlds was important, they presumably would have named him to the world team.

That is a different issue. I'm pretty sure Vincent will go to Worlds because of how the Olympics worked out for him. The others not so sure. We will have to wait and see. I would like to see them there but don't really expect to see them.

Correcting myself because I just remembered World team is different from Olympic team. Ilia will be there if he can. Nathan, I'm not sure at all.

I doubt Nathan will go, wouldn’t be surprised if Jason passes, but I will be shocked if Ilia doesn’t get the tech minimum to compete.

Vincent + Ilia + anyone else is a strong team, so I’m not sure why anyone is worried. It’ll be fine. USFS had to know in advance that both Nathan and Jason were iffy in terms of participation.

I don't know if Nathan would go. After winning Olympics, athletes want to go out on a high note. I wouldn't be surprised if Yuzuru does Worlds and wins it one final time, wanting redemption, and I don't think Nathan wants to go and potentially come second.

If Hanyu goes to worlds it will be to still chase that 4 axel white whale. The only reason why Nathan wouldn't win if he went is fatigue and lack of training after all the media.

I wasn’t expecting Hanyu, but you’re right, that’s the one reason he’d go. I got the impression he might be ready to call it off with the Olympic attempt, though.

Olympic years can be unpredictable, but I’ll personally be surprised if Yuma doesn’t win. I could see Grassl, Cha, and any combination of the American, Japanese, and Russian guys among the other contenders. The judges will be ready to reward the younger guys.

I'm expecting 2 Japanese and one American on the Worlds podium this year. I'm hoping/expecting for Vincent to come out and skate wonderfully as he'll want a positive end to the season. But if not Vincent, I wouldn't be surprised to see Ilia on the podium, while making history for being the first to do a quad/quad combination.

Vincent, Ilia and 3rd guy (Camden?) would not be my definition of consistency. Even if Jason went, Vincent or Ilia would probably need to finish top 5 to assure 3 spots.

If the US needs three spots, time for others to step it up and earn them.
This. Countries generally tend to earn the number of spots they deserve (with some exceptions, of course). If the US has 3 guys worthy of being at Worlds, then they should be able to keep the spots. And if they don't, they'll get them back when they do.

Yup, if Nathan withdraws and Jason declines to take his place, Camden would go. Jimmy Ma is the third alternate after Camden.

ETA: I hope Camden is training hard

Just to show that Jason's skating is very outdated. Nowadays it's embarrassing not to be able to land a quad, as almost all men and the top ladies can do them.

Why can't he learn one when others can and he is this apparent skating genius?

Unless Chen, after getting home, and doing more press and appearances and sponsorship stuff has the 100% fire in his belly to train and to compete again this season at Worlds, I think Arutunian's advice to get on with his life is good, especially since he's already created a good one to go back to: he's not one of the skaters who hangs out because he can't think of what comes after skating.

Jason Brown's skating is some of the very best there has ever been. I say that as someone who is no particular fan but recognizes good blade control and movement when he sees it.

Name three skaters who competed this season who could skate his Olympic programs (elements, choreography, and everything else) with positive GOE.

One of Jason's issues was his original coach, Kori Ade. I remember that well before Nationals in 2014, she was asked why she wasn't emphasizing Jason's quad development. Her reply was that she deliberately emphasized the skating skills aspect, and that Jason could always learn a quad. She did him a disservice in her ignorance.

I think the USFSA may persuade Nathan to go to Worlds to secure 3 spots for team USA in 2023, if there is a doubt of it happening.

Raf said in his interview that he would advise Nathan to go to college and not to Worlds. :( I hope Nathan doesn’t listen to him:mitchell:
Well Nathan can’t top what he did at the Olympics. He can only do worse if he’s a bit fatigued or worn out.

Theoretically, Nathan could top his Olympic performance, score-wise. He didn't hit his record score in the free skate; the botched combo/single flip and the second spin both cost points. He could also try to go out in a blaze of glory by throwing in the quad loop--not that I expect that to happen.

He may well get so many money-making opportunities in the short run that training for Worlds is simply not feasible. Jason, though, is probably a different story. It's conceivable (though not likely) that he could medal at worlds if enough of the top people don't go.

Uh recently the USFSA has been unsuccessful at getting the Olympic gold medalists to stick around for worlds. I don't expect Jason or Nathan or even all three dance teams to appear at worlds.

Nathan is already set up pretty well financially so I doubt if money would play a major role in his decision for Worlds. My guess is that it'll come down to health and motivation.
