She had a very rough fs. She only landed a 3s cleanly and fell on a 2a. The rest of her triples suffered from downgrades and mistakes.

Caroline won with a very subpar fs (but an amazing 3lo-3lo), but overall it was a rough competition

Since when is it not PC to praise a "minority ethnic group"...... oh, wait, Chinese are too successful to praised..... :D..... Look at Chan, he wins science competitions, music contests on 2 instruments, dances in ballet performances, great at math in school AND wins medals nationally and internationally. No praise for the Chinese.... let's make sure their test scores requirements to get into colleges are raised even higher than for others, so the losers don't feel left out.
 
I would rather not have this thread turn into non-Asians bringing up misinformation about Asians to make some anti-PC point. Funny enough what has been argued is a variation of telling people to not appropriate people's cultures which tends to be something "anti-PC" hate being told to do.
 
I can see where this discussion is headed. Only Spaniards should skate to Carmen. Only Arabs should skate to Scheherezade. Only Tatars should skate to Nessun Dorma. It would certainly take a few warhorses out of the repertoire.

Though it would be an interesting season if skaters were only allowed to skate to music from the country they represent competitively.
Or maybe limiting it to contemporary pop music from that country to make it Eurovision on ice. That would be... interesting? (But probably excessively gaudy and hilarious)
 
Soon enough this thread is going to sound like an Ivana Komova commentary. As an ethnically Chinese person, I would rather let Chinese American and Canadian athletes speak for themselves than having white fans speak for them, especially on the subject of what they can or cannot/should or should not skate to. It's cringe worthy.

Karen Chen has embraced her Chinese heritage through ethnic dances. Good for her. But it's her choice. Others have the freedom to choose whatever they want (yes, even Michael Buble), as long as they do not demean the culture from which they borrow. If non-Chinese skaters choose to skate to House of the Flying Dagger --- and some have --- I haven't heard any Chinese fans object to that.

Unnecessary disclaimer: Karen Chen is American. Nathan Chen is American. Patrick CHAN is Canadian.

Prime Example of Asian culture from Western point of view: Puccini. just watch Turandot and Madame Butterfly. Chinese and Japanese characters singing in Italian about their own troubles/sorrows. First time I watched Madame Butterfly on TV, I felt all sorts of weirdness. Same with Turandot, actually.

Mulan is pretty lame by comparison. :)
 
People may watch whatever ethnically-correct version of Carmen they want on YouTube, but Katarina's is bookmarked on mine.

And I have absolutely zero desire to see Kovtun skate Swan Lake.

I'd tentatively plan on Nguyen keeping the spot at JGP #5 and wait and see how this week's JGP goes before deciding whether Andrews should get a second. If neither Lin nor Ma surpasses Andrews' score, I'd put Andrews in JGP #6 and tentatively hold JGP #7 for Hong. If Lin/Hong/Ma don't break the 160 mark, then I'd give JGP #7 to Ashley Kim.

USFS has given 11 young ladies international junior or adv. nov. assignments this season so they have met the goal of spreading the assignments around. At this point, they need to invest in the best juniors they have, regardless of whether they'll make the JGP Final. It will be to USFS's benefit to have experienced skaters competing at junior worlds (more name recognition, better start order). I don't see how the U.S. could beat Japan or Russia and defeating Eunsoo Lim to get into the top three nations will also be incredibly hard. But I think it will be next to impossible if they don't build anyone's reputation. Not sending anyone out twice sends the message that USFS doesn't think any of their girls have a future.

Handicapping the subs who haven't had a JGP assignment:
-Harrell already competed in Asia and got her jr. world minimums. Her score there doesn't merit inclusion on the JGP over a second one for Ngyuen or Andrews.
-Shin already competed in Asia and didn't get her minimums. I don't think she should get a second international over skaters who actually skated well.
-Wessenberg and Rydberg have their minimums and have senior B assignments. They don't need a JGP.
-Shi has been very consistent this summer and her inclusion on the sub list is her reward. I can't see her actually being chosen.
-Ouellette's already had two seasons on the JGP and hasn't significantly improved.
-Nakahara's top summer score of 156.02 is good and she could be chosen to try to get her minimums.
-Kim has a good summer score of 160.91. She already has her minimums, but she would be first in line on my list if any of the subs are chosen.
-Le's a tough case. Clearly, she's not at the level she used to be at. I would rather her be sent to a Senior B than to the JGP, but I could see her being selected to try to obtain her minimums.
 
As of today, Starr Andrews is listed as the placeholder entry for JGP #6 in Gdansk, Poland.

Maybe I'll get yelled at for speculating, but it would seem highly unlikely Gracie Gold goes to Ondrej Nepala on 9/21 considering she withdrew from 10/7 Japan Open. The Nepala subs are Le, Rydberg, and Wang.
 
Last time I saw the Nepela list, I read that it was still unofficial on the US front. That was a while ago. Is that still the case? If not, either Gracie really is going to show up, or if she isn't, then I hope the chosen reserve has been informed ahead of time if we're sending anyone to replace her.

And I loved both. No weirdness. Just beautiful music.
 
I can't wait to see M. Butterfly on Broadway with Clive Owen and a newcomer Asian actor. I love hearing David Henry Hwang's take down on the story of Madame Butterfly while still recognizing the genius and beauty of the music.

Thank you the link! I've seen it already and I can't wait to see the new Broadway production. I loved reading the play, after seeing the film, and I found the play to be much funnier with a more acid-tinged sense of humor than the movie. It was more winking than the film. Here are some stills of the original Broadway staging with John Lithgow and B.D. Wong that I thought was pretty stunning:

I love it that the play is brought back to Broadway...... I hope Clive Owen does a good job on stage. I consider him a very commercial actor at this point.
 
At the JGP in Riga, Latvia tomorrow (early Thursday morning Eastern time), Ashley Lin, 14, is scheduled to compete at the end of the second group (#11) at ~5 am ET. According to both Lin's ISU bio and Team USA bio on IN, Adam Rippon is listed as one of her choreographers, along with Anya Artemova, the wife of her coach, Sergey Artemov.

The article was pretty clear that the first possible competitions Gracie might compete in this season are the Grand Prixs in November, IMO.

Likely the reason why Nepela wasn't addressed in the articles about Gracie's time off - because the assignment was never official to begin with...

Will be interesting to see who ends up at Nepela (if anyone). Surely we have to hear fairly soon.
