Before Kristina Bland and Matthew Sperry compete at this week's JGP in Gdansk, here's a preview of their Free Dance to "Caught in the Fire" & "The Beginning of the End" by Klergy (filmed at the Lake Placid Olympic Center in Lake Placid, NY in August, 2023 by Jordan Cowan): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H3qCpbhOkgI

"We filmed this video at 7 in the morning the day after Kristina & Matthew competed in the 2023 Lake Placid Ice Dance International competition. The Free Dance Soundtrack is from the TV show Lucifer. Taking inspiration from the show, Kristina and Matthew portray the struggle between good and evil. This theme is very different from their past work, and they hope to show new growth with this genre."

Choreography by Igor Shpilband and Renee Petovski
Costumes by Stephanie Whitby-Miller and Jane Pastor

Kaitlin Hawayek was a guest on the Voice in Sport podcast this week:

Kaitlin Hawayek is Team USA Ice Dancer and a 2022 Pyeongchang Olympian. She is a 5x Bronze Medalist at the National Figure Skating Championship, 2018 Four Continents Champion, 2018 NHK Trophy Champion, and 2014 World Junior Champion. Kaitlin takes us through her junior career, highlighting the lessons she learned in competing in a multitude of environments at a young age. She shares her journey struggling with an eating disorder and how she grew into a healthy relationship with her body image. Later in her career, facing near career ending injuries, Katilin discusses how she took a pause from sport in order to take care of her physical and mental health. Through her journey, Kaitlin shares incredible advice for women athletes on how to take care of our bodies and minds, to advocate for our needs, and to find and develop resources for both our personal and athletic success and longevity.

"I am limitless. I am neither who I was or who I want to be, but I am who I am right now. I am a human that has so many values beyond sport. Sport is what I do. Art is what I share. But I love myself because of my kindness, because of my resilience, and because of my passion and creativity." - Kaitlin Hawayek

This podcast is from 2022, but it's a good interview with Emilea Zingas on how she transitioned from singles to ice dance. The host is Emi's sister Callie.

Another Queen routine? I don’t mean from them specifically (“Under Pressure” was just half Queen), but just overall. And Pink Floyd?

But… I bet I’m gonna enjoy what they will give because sometimes you can take something well-worn and provide something new… and Chock/Bates with I.AM are the ones who can do that.

They probably heard the comments about not capturing the potential of Paula Abdul loud and clear and instead of struggling all season in the hopes of getting it right by the second half of the season (nationals), they decided to go with something that may be more comfortable for their style of movement.

I do think if they had kept working at it, they could have gotten their original RD to where they wanted it, so I’m a little disappointed. However, I totally understand not wanting to go through the season having to struggle like that. And in a way, changing a program this early on before the first GP event can be a sort of cleanse and they can feel like Skate America is the “real” start of their season without the dark cloud of that Challenger following them.

I remember Lang/Tshern skating to the Scorpions maybe 25 years ago? An excellent tradition. :)

I really liked their Paula Abdul RD. I am not sure why they thought they had to change it (though I also like their new music choices).
I thought their Paula Abdul program could have been good with some retooling, but it just didn't seem to have anything that stood out. Their new program looks much better though. They just seem much more comfortable with the whole thing, although the one lift I saw in the runthrough still looked rough, and it was right in front of me. Just looked like it took a lot of work.

I will tell you why . I don't like Green/Parsons, at all. And they failed miserably trying to create any sort of vibe with the original RD. But I just watched their SA practice and this RD looks good, I didn't even recognise her (and in a good way) and she looks so good I barely noticed him. So as someone who really doesn't like this team I have to give credit where credit is due, this is good for them.

I’m one of the few who liked the original G/P RD more than this one but I love them as a team so I’m sure I’ll get on board soon. I just wish it was any heavy metal besides Scorpions. Not a fan and would like something no one else has done before.

@AngieNikodinovLove and I were discussing RD music earlier this evening. Any team doing Madonna, Michael/Janet Jackson, Prince, Queen, or another previously used artist/song is missing a huge opportunity by doing 80's 'warhorses'. There's a ton of awesome 80's music that definitely fit the requirements and can standout as a signature program for teams looking to break through or stay on top.

NuShooz, Expose, Chaka Kahn, Lisa Lisa, Laura Branigan, Jody Watley. Yes, there are so many many many fun choices to be had.
