This case popped up on my feed and I have not been able to get it out of my mind since. This poor woman did everything right including helping those less fortunate than herself. She paid for her kindness with her life. R.I.P.

District attorney files response opposing a motion by Scott Peterson’s defense team for DNA testing (April 23, 2024):
The district attorney in Stanislaus County, California, has filed new paperwork in court opposing a motion by Scott Peterson’s defense team -- the Los Angeles Innocence Project -- for DNA testing in the murder case of Laci Peterson and Conner Peterson.
In a more than 300-page filing on Monday, the DA’s office addresses the 14 items the defense is requesting DNA testing for and why they say these have already been tested, litigated, are unrelated, or the burden has not been met to retest them.
Last month, Scott Peterson, who was convicted of killing his wife and their unborn son 20 years ago, appeared in court virtually after the Los Angeles Innocence Project filed three motions in the murder case earlier this year, including one seeking evidence from the original trial.
Laci Peterson, who was 27 years old and eight months pregnant, disappeared on Christmas Eve in 2002. Her body was found in San Francisco Bay in April 2003.
Scott Peterson, 51, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder in the death of his wife and second-degree murder in the death of their unborn son. He was convicted in 2004 and sentenced to death in 2005. He was later sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Is anyone following the Karen Read trial in Massachusetts? The opening statements started today.
That's a wild case, I don't know what to think about that one. Both sides of the story are kind of nuts. I'm not following it that closely though because I'm way too invested in the Chad Daybell case because I went down a rabbit hole when his wife was on trial last year.

Two Boston TV stations are showing the trial live and others are showing it online. Someone in my office is watching it on her desktop.

I have not been following it. A blogger and self-appointed crusader inserted himself into the case and he's got a lot of fans, it seems. He's been charged with intimidating and harassing witnesses.

I saw some of the clips of the Karen Read trial. I still think it's wild - one of the first responders who testified hearing Read confess seemingly perjured herself about not being friends with the daughter who lived in the house O'Keefe was found it front of. And collecting evidence in red solo cups? Is this how they regularly run law enforcement when no one is looking? I'm not totally sold on the big conspiracy though, I'll wait and see what kind of State's evidence there is against Read.

I keep thinking of the niece/nephew he was raising after they lost their parents. Where are they now?

One thing I've learned for certain at the trial is that my life is boring compared to these witnesses. If I know it's going to snow, I get home early and stay inside until all the roads are cleared. It seems lots of the people are out drinking and driving and not giving the snow a second thought.

One of Canada’s worst ever serial killers is dead. He was beaten by fellow inmates and died of his injuries. My only question is what took them so long?

I saw something that I’m sure I won’t be able to find again, that said he was mostly kept separate from other inmates. The person offering commentary, who had worked in the BC prison he was kept in for awhile, said he thought it was a major failure of the prison system and even thought there was probably someone else involved in the murders who had major incentive to make sure he couldn’t ever talk. I don’t know how credible the guy was, and I doubt many people are shedding tears for Pickton but I do think we have a societal responsibility to keep inmates safe, even those that seem more monster than human. The commentator suggested that an inquiry is warranted, but personally I feel like my tax dollars have spent enough money on Robert Pickton. Especially compared to the money and time spent actually investigating missing and murdered indigenous women.

I think a similar fate happened to Jeffrey Dahmer. Even prisoners have standards of decency.

It was one person that attacked although who knows if anybody else was involved too .. yes there definitely will be an investigation but we won’t here about it.

Thank goodness there is finally closure for this man. His father had been missing for two years. His remains were found in a pond near Marthaville, La.

SHREVEPORT, La. - A family is finally closer to answers they've waited for, for more than two years, after the remains of Steven Burkett of Marthaville were found on May 24.

“For me personally, I mean, it's a lot of relief, honestly. It's difficult, but it's a closing of a chapter that we thought may never end,” said Adam Burkett, Steven’s son.

Relief. That's how Adam Burkett describes the feeling of his father’s remains being found more than two years after he disappeared. He was found in a pond off Preston Hayes Road near Marthaville less than a mile from where he was last seen on Feb. 12, 2022. When Steven was reported missing, Adam couldn’t believe it at first.

“I guess it's almost surreal. Like, you know, everybody says you don't really expect it to happen to you. You know, it kind of feels like a dream, almost like not something that you ever think would happen,” said Burkett.
