This debate has been ongoing for a long time now, and it's become a bit tedious and obnoxious at this point to PC and nitpick everything to death.
The term "lady" or ladies" only became disparaging because someone said so at one time, and now it is a mind-set.
The sport needs a lot of help in many ways, and I would say this issue is not of vital importance, at this time. JMHO.
I don't find the word "lady" to be disparaging or negative...but it's not a word I'd associate with a sport or an athlete. No one refers to Serena Williams, Rhonda Rousey, Lindsay Vonn or Simone Biles as "ladies." They are women. Like I said, there's a strength denoted in that word that you don't get from lady.
Still, I do agree. It's really not that big of a deal when it comes down to it.
Then again, when we're talking about trying to make the sport more accessible and relatable to masses in an attempt to draw more people to it, perhaps a more, erm, "progressive" term to identify the field would be "women" as opposed to "ladies." The average person still thinks figure skating is a bunch of fru-fru girls spinning around in sequins to tinkly piano music. Referring to them as "ladies" doesn't exactly help that perception.
Again, it's not a huge deal and has no real bearing on anyone within the sport; however, for those outside of the sport it may feed into the out-dated perception that tends to exist in people's minds. Referring to the field as "women" rather than "ladies" is in no way the definitive solution to this problem...but I don't think it would hurt either.
