The Shoma Uno fan thread - Go for número UNO!

NHK article

(my rough translation of his announcement on his official site)
I, Shoma Uno, graduated from Grand-prix Tokai [Skating Club] where I trained for a long time.

I don't have any concrete future plan yet. At this point, I'll focus on the camps outside of Japan which start soon. And I wish I'll go forward step by step.

I'm on a new startline with gratitude in my mind to my coaches who pushed my back to go forward as well as I'll not forget my skating life is supported by lots of people.

Thanx for supporting me in advance.
____

And the NHK article says "According to a person around him he'll choose his coach after training at various places to feel the atmosphere of those places such as camps out of Japan." Sounds he'll participate in various camps and/or tryouts. He's been skating previous competitive/exhibition programs at shows in Japan so far. So he might continue his previous programs since it can be late to make new program(s).

WOW I am shocked by this news. I would have never imagined Shoma leaving his current coaching situation. I am excited for
him and wish him luck! He must know who the new coach is otherwise why would he announce the coaching change.

Come on Shoma tell us more. :watch:

Yeah, I think so too. I guess he has already contacted the coach(es) but not officially decided since he hasn't done the tryout(s) yet or something? Anyways his comment that his coaches pushed his back for leaving them reminded me of Yamada-sensei encouraged Mao to move to a coach out of Japan. I wish this experience will bring him something new and he'll be updated on the technical and artistic side and/or give him new motivations for running toward next Olys. Go Shoma!

I expected this change last year ! I’m hopeful that this change will be fruitful. I wish frank was still coaching. Though he is the king of scaling thing back, he is a master of making the athlete slow, down and process information; mood, feeling, atmosphere and create a base of consistency. Shoma, is only missing that. Also, i hope that his next coach can work on his timing so those barbaric falls he takes training won’t be as severe. I’d also like to see him work in his movement in tandem
With the music because he has it all.

Shoma's official site was just updated

2019-2020 season's programs
SP: choreographed by Shae-Lynn Bourne
FS: choreographed by David Willson

I'm sorry to have kept you waiting.
My original plan was to make the second challenge with both of my previous programs from this past season, but, with all changes in my environment, things went the way that I asked two choreographers who made my exhibition programs in the past to make my new programs; Shae-Lynn Bourne to make my new SP and David Willson to make my new LP.

They have various ideas that are even beyond my imaginations. So I'm looking forward to working with them.

This time things are going very late compared to my previous seasons. I'll start working on choreography from the beginning of August and it seems the debuts of those programs will be in the second half of August. I wish you guys are looking forward to seeing them.

My bet is he's thinking about moving to a coach in North America.

I don't understand why he has not announced his new coach. Why the big secret?

Speculation on social media is 50/50 RAF or Orser.

:watch:

He said he's gonna participate in various camps very soon for choosing his new coach. We'll see the answer before long. Let's wait and see. (BTW when Mao left coach Yamada, it was just like Shoma's situation. Mao & Mai had an initial plan to visit several training rinks for choosing their new coach. The first rink was Rafa's Ice Castle and Mai liked him/there very much, and we all know who they chose.)

Here are vids of yesterday's his programs from ATS (day 1). It's nice to see he's in good shape going through this all changes.

The silver medalist of the 2018 Olympiad and two-time silver medalist of the World Championship Shoma Uno will soon arrive in Moscow to begin preparations for the new season in the group of coach Eteri Tutberidze , reports FFKR.

The athlete plans to spend more than a month in Russia at the summer gathering of the group, after which further plans will be discussed. The Tutberidze Group began preparations for the new season on June 3 in Novogorsk.

One month or permanent?

Surely he wants this decided soon... so I'm guessing permanent. I wish him the best and am excited that he's willing to make a change... but it's hard to see how her methods will work for an adult skater. She will work him to death. I wish he had picked Mishin.

Today he clarified things again (sorry, don't have a link- but someone translated from Japanese) to say that he really doesn't have a permanent situation and may in fact coach himself this year, but that he will have a permanent training situation by next year. So let's not get ahead of him.

Sure, it's all speculation at this point, but I really hope he doesn't go coachless. It's certainly been tried before: has it EVER worked out well?

Call me crazy, but something tells me Shoma could do very well with Eteri. He's had the (seemingly) maternal and nurturing approach for years now... maybe he's ready for a tough taskmaster.

Shoma Uno was honored at an event in Nagoya today [June 10], where he accepted an award bestowed on him last year by a regional organization.

Except it is not speculation that he's made a decision. He is saying that he hasn't. I hope he doesn't go coaches either, but young skaters sometimes need to figure out what they do need and have a gap until they do.

(my rough translation of the Japanese article)
.....
He(=Shoma) indicated the possibility of running this coming new season coach-less, according to the interview.

"I don't have the intention that I need to hurry in deciding my new coach. I'm wondering if I may train alone. I want to decide my coach by next season, though. I mean by one year later." This awarding ceremony held in his hometown was his first appearance in public after announcing that he left his coaches, Machiko Yamada and Mihoko Higuchi, under whom he had trained since he was little. During his speech on the stage he said "I want to do my best every day from now on," he revealed he'll search for new training environment including new home rink with a deadline of one year.

He's going to participate in a summer camp held by Eteri Tutberidze who teaches students including PyeongChang Oly's women's gold medalist Alina Zagitova, but the purpose is just to join the camp. "The main focus is (working on) jumps. It's surprising that ladies younger than me do quads. I wanted to train at such high level," he explained. After the camp back home he'll train at Chukyo University's rink as usual where he's been training.

"Yamada-sensei and Higuchi-sensei told me that they want me to grow up to a higher level. I want to tackle new challenges." First of all he'll work on the consistency on 4Lz and 4Lo.

I would hate to see him go coachless too, and I won't call you crazy. :) I get Eteri's attraction, she seems like a skater whisperer. Except that the details we've heard of her coaching are rather scary -- her method seems to be simply repetition and starvation. She's not known for solid technique - that would be Mishin's strength. But at least he's only doing the camp and not committing to her for the long term.

My main question/issue about Eteri or any other Russian coaches is whether it's possible for them (or they want) to teach a non-Russian skater in the next Olys season who is potentially one of the main contenders for podium. Remember Caro was out of Mishin's team and Tursy went to Orser out of Eteri's team heading to PeongChang season.

Also how do they communicate? In English? How is Shoma's English, and how is Eteri's for that matter?

Shoma's family is rich and his main sponsor company is Toyota, so I guess it's not difficult for him to take his manager who speaks English very well with him. Dunno about Eteri, but, as she stayed in the US for a while, so maybe her English is fine, I guess?

ETA:
He's worked with Alexander Ouriashev for a few years already. Their work looked fruitful, so I think their mutual understanding was OK.

I remember reading somewhere that Shoma understands skating related English. However, that might have been a couple of years ago, so it’s possible his language skills have improved since that interview.

I suspect Uno and Tutberidize will get along just fine. He's an adult who knows exactly what he wants which is to get to the top of the World and Olympic podiums. Fan concerns are not skater concerns. I suspect he knows exactly what he'll gain by training with her team or he wouldn't chose to do so. And, it's a choice he's making. The angst about her "ruining" him is ridiculous. Moreover, he's been nursing injury the past two seasons so it's unlikely the difference in training will "injure" him. Now, there certainly could be an issue with him training in Russia during the Olympic season, but that's three years down the road and lots of things can change in that time. Sometimes you just need to change things up a bit.

Supposed Shoma's schedule
June: ATS show -->Eteri's camp("more than a month")--
July: --->THE ICE (Osaka, July 27-28)--
Aug: THE ICE (Nagoya, Aug 4-6)--->choreography (with David/Shae-Lynn)--->Friends on Ice (Aug 30-Sept 1, supposedly debuts of new program(s)
