And here is Tursynbaeva's IG photo with him.

Thank you Tursy! 👍 Looks Shoma is nicely accepted by his rink mates. :) And actually we can see his photos more frequently than he was in his hometown. :D

For those who can read Japanese. This interview is a very informative one. (It gave me sorta reason why he wanted to participate in a camp with a packed group.)

Loved the SBS cantilever with Trusova (the second one).

This interview was done at one of his sponsor company's event on May 6th. It's a very long interview so I'll translate some of the Q&As.
(first half)https://www.tvguide.or.jp/feature/kissandcry/20190509/02.html

Q: Your feelings after finishing Worlds?
A: After finishing the season, I skated in lots of shows. There were days when I could not sort my feelings out. Time has past since then and various thoughts came up in my mind. Today I'm leaning forward to new challenges.

Q: You had lots of injuries during this past season. How's your physical condition now?
A: I guess many people are wondering if I just don't say "I have pains" even though I have pains. ACTUALLY, I have no pains. No lie. I recovered from my injuries. Believe me.

Q: At WTT in April you attempted 3A-4T as well as you mentioned about the possibility to work on quintuple jumps in the future. You looked aggressive. What happened in your mind?
A: Honestly speaking, in the big picture of my future plan, I used to think "Maybe it's not necessary for me to add any more quads." However, during this past season, the thought came to my mind, that is "I want to go up to a higher level." My two wishes in my mind at WTT were to attempt what I wanted to try there as well as to contribute to our team's good results.

Q: So you mean you'll try something new and difficult.
A: Yes. In the beginning of this past season (2018-2019 season) my plan was to blush up what I was already capable of. Today, however, I want to aggressively challenge something new that are not in my arsenal yet, and grow up to higher and higher levels. I'll spend this off-season not to 'get back in the mix for the top level' but to 'go beyond that'.

Q: What about new programs for next season (2019-2020)?
A: I haven't announced yet. Dunno when to announce.

Q: Then, do you have any musics that you want to use for next season?
A: No. Sorry to say so even though you slightly changed your questions. (The crowd laughed.)

Q: So you're taking time for preparing for next season?
A: The musics are already decided. I don't want to lie. I don't know how to answer when I'm asked about my new programs. If I'm told it's OK to announce, I can do so even right now, but...

Q: OK, let's make it sure before you announce the musics. Are your preparations going well?
A: You'll find the reason why I'm wondering if I can announce the musics right now, when you knew the musics. I don't like to cheat or cover up when I answer the questions that I'm asked, so now I'm trying my best in telling the info as far as I can say.

Q: I change my questions to an easier one to answer. Are you going to work on quintuple jumps?
A: My first attempt of a quintuple jump was during a practice for Prince Ice World. It was even harder than I imagined. I could barely rotate 4 times and a half even on the day when I was in top form. I still have other things like 4Lz and 4Lo to work on. So, if quintuple jumps are left behind at the moment as something to work on in the future, it OK to me. While I can do 3A-4T combo, it's not consistent enough to do in competitions yet. I drew big attention from media (by mentioning quintuple jumps), but what I meant was just that I'll "practice" them, and that the priority of quints are so low in me. At first, I'll work to get the weapons in my arsenal, like 4Lz and 4Lo, to compete this season (2019-2020). And then I'll work on quints as well as I want to enjoy my work on them.

Q: How are you confident about 3A-4T?
A: 4S used to be the most difficult jump to me. When I started to work on 3A-4T, 4S was not the most difficult one no longer. Working on 3A-4T naturally made my other jumps more consistent than before. I wonder if it's due to the positive effect on the mental side. In that sense it's not how much I'm confident about 3A-4T but it's how much more I got confident about other jumps by working on 3A-4T.

Q: What kind of 'Shoma Uno' do you want to show during this off-season?
A: I'm already scheduled to go abroad to participate in camps. I'll come back home to skate in shows. Right now I'm just focusing on transforming. I wish I can show people the process of my transformation. I will skate in 3-4 more shows. I want to enjoy up the shows when I skate in them. I wish people will enjoy watching me when I'm enjoying the show.

Q: How are you excited about the coming season?
A: I'm sorry if I'm repeating my answers that I said when I was asked about other questions, but many of the results that I received during this past season (2018-2019) were not good ones that I expected. So in the coming season (2019-2020) I want to show how much I improved due to those [bitter] experiences.

(second half) https://www.tvguide.or.jp/feature/kissandcry/20190510/01.html

Q: What is your favorite program?
A: My answer to this kind of question is always "I can't name any particular one." ....hmmm..(after a while).... Honestly speaking, I can't name any particular one for competitions, since I have various memories with every program, such as "I improved a lot with this program", or "I received good results with this one." Basically it can be said the same about ex numbers. At first I liked 'See you again' better than my other current ex numbers. That said, although at first I thought 'Time after time' and 'Great spirits' were difficult types of programs to me, I found I'm capable of skating these types of programs after I skated them several times. So, all in all I can't name any particular favorite program.

Q: So we can expect some more different types of programs from you in the future?
A: A few years back I didn't like to try any types of programs or movements that I was not good at, however, these days I tend to find "Oh, I can do this." For upcoming season I asked Shae-Lynn Bourne to choreograph a new exhibition program again. The music hasn't selected yet, but I'm looking forward to working with her.

Q: Any thoughts about 2019-2020 season?
A: I'll focus on working on jumps. It's still just my wish to do so at this stage of the season. Camps will start very soon. I don't know how the things will go yet, but I wish I'll show people the fruit of my training.

Q: It seems you offer lots of ideas these days. Do you think it's because you grew up?
A: Regarding which abroad camps I'll go, it was not my choices. However, it was my first experience to decide on my own to go abroad camps. Maybe it's not because I grew up but it's because I was determined. I've trained in Japan all through my career so far. So it's gonna be a big change to me. There might be tough time to stay out of Japan. I'll train with determination in my mind all through the rest of my career. It's not announced yet which camps I'm going. I can't tell further info at this point. Anyways I'll do my best.

Q: What made you think that way?
A: It was just after Worlds. Various thoughts came to my mind. I really thought I did everything that I could do in my training up to Worlds. The environment in Chukyo University was wonderful. That said, I wanted someone on the same level to train with. If I had someone like that, I could have pushed each other with the skater. Maybe it could make me work hard naturally, I mean I didn't need to be so much determined on my own. When I was training alone, first of all I needed to be hard on myself. Up to today I've tried to keep as hard on myself as possible. That said, I can't help but thinking that it was a needless work to discipline myself if I had someone to fight with on the same level. Keeping hard on my own was something difficult and tough. That process was something wasting that I could have avoid, I think.

Q: That's what you meant by "determined".
A: Yes. It's a tremendous determination. I haven't used the word "determination" before since I thought it's a very heavy word. So I didn't like to use this word in the past. However, such a person says "I'm determined" today. It tells how big decision I made. I'll be serious and focused on skating when camps started in upcoming season (2019-2020). Until the camps start I'll spend this off-season carefully not to get injured. Camps will be the turning point to be on.

Q: When will you go to the camps and when will you come home?
A: The schedule has not officially decided yet. Maybe I'll go to a camp from around mid or the end of June for a bit longer than a month. Then I'll come home for a show. And then I'll go to a camp again. Maybe I'll have more training in camps than at home.

Q: What do you worry about staying out of Japan?
A: It's fun and comfortable in Japan. That said, first of all I'm not a type who enjoys going out of my room. So I'm not worrying. Lots of people will support me. I'm looking forward to training there.

Q: Have you decided your coach yet? What are you expecting from your new coach?
A: Well,...I'm more of looking forward to the new environment. I'm excited about the environment where I can train with excellent skaters.

Q: Do you enjoy something that grown-ups do, such as alcohol?
A: So-so. First of all I don't like alcohol so much. So I don't need to be hard on myself when it comes down to alcohol. Someone can put weight on it, but to me alcohol can not be said like "something to live for." I turned 21 yo. Before Worlds I thought I'll continue my skating life much longer than I think today. I changed my mind. I'll work hard with throwing the idea away that I'll continue my skating life for a long time.

Q: What are your thoughts about your artistic side?
A: I think it's changed during these 2-3 years. Especially I feel so when I skate 'Time after time'. I used to be a skater who didn't do much facial expressions. But these days, especially in shows, I'm paying attentions to that aspect. Now I feel I got matured in that area compared to myself in the past.

It seems that his jumps are getting higher, but the attempt from WTT seems to be more fully rotated. Anyway, seeing his landings I would love to know what joint supplement he is using, because it looks very effective.
On the previous photo - I was hoping his manager would advise him against wearing item with USSR symbols, but I guess, when in Rome...

National camp is ongoing and they had an interview with Shoma there.

Writer Wada from Jiji-press tweeted that Shoma will train without a main-coach this season. He'll continue training at Chukyo University's rink as his home rink. He'll work with Takeshi Honda as a technical coach (jump coach). He said "I'm not worrying [about training without a main coach]." As for searching a main coach he answered he'll take enough time to look for, mainly abroad. "The most important point to me is I want an environment where I can train with other skaters on the same level as mine, such as skaters who do multiple kinds of quads," he answered.

(my rough translation)
.....
"Eteri was a tough and kind coach. It was a very good experience," said Uno, "It's been a long time since the last time, probably since I was little, to train at the environment's pace and not at my own pace." It sounded the training was fruitful. Meanwhile, he plans to train in Chukyo University's home rink as well as go abroad. "I don't belong to any club. It makes me easy to go and see various places. The most important thing is what kind of determination I have in my mind," he explained the reason why he plans to train on his own this season.

One of the reasons why he left his long-time home club is "Coach Machiko [Yamada] suggested me to leave them as well. She also said our relationships had been like a family and it was the time to change the environments," he revealed that his teachers pushed his back to leave them. "Coach Mihoko [Higuchi] told me that she'll continue to be one of my biggest supporters from now on, too. I won't let my results down. Even if it's just one placement, I'll not let it down. I try my best to do so for Machiko-sensei and Mihoko-sensei."

Here is a glimpse of today's national camp. Shoma's landings look improved during Eteri's camp. We can see Takeshi Honda working with him at the board.
Shoma said during the interview "I try to receive even better results than before, by doing so I can return the favor to Machiko-sensei and Mihoko-sennsei." and "I want to find my own skating."

Nice to see Shoma smiling relaxed at the national camp.

I was just wondering regarding some of his interviews - does he really have a ice just for himself when he is training? He made it sound like he was just by himself when he was skating in Nagoya.

No, when he trained in Chukyo University's rink, he usually had other students of Yamada/Higuchi to share the ice time, i.e. Kanako Murakami /Mako Yamashita, or other skaters who study in Chukyo University. But none of those skaters were on his peer level, such as nailing multiple kinds of quads, that Shoma wanted.

A small portion of Kiss and Cry interview with Shoma translated to English. Thanks to yawning_shoma

Thanks! I just came here to post the same article from Kiss and Cry.:)

!! gracious, wise, elegant people.... (this is how any partnership should end or be put on hold, or even be a next step towards future) and yes, one's teacher is a "sensei" and should be treated as such, and a good sensei knows when to give one space. This is almost like a folk tale "wise sensei and her pupil".

Few recent fotos of Uno.

I somewhat felt like posting my translation of the whole interview by 'Kiss & Cry' magazine that @kittyjake5 posted earlier on this thread.

(my rough translation)
Q: How was the camp in Russia?
A: It was a good experience. Previously I heard Eteri was a very tough coach. Yes, she was a tough coach, but toward the end of the camp I felt kindness from her. I think we could have personal mutual-understanding during the camp. I often make my training plans on my own these days, but [at Eteri's camp] I was told "Do this" and I did the thing that I was told, thinking "It's like I'm back in the days when I was a kid" in my mind.

Q: Can you explain the process how you left your team?
A: [Yamada] Machiko-sensei (*sensei=teacher) encouraged me to leave them saying "Probably you should leave us". I was also told that in a sense we had known too well to each other, there were good points and bad points of such relationships, it was beyond teacher-student relationships, we were like a family, and probably it must be the right timing to change environments. Well, I'm not sure I'm good at summarizing this type of discussion. So I don't want to mention it too much.

Q: What did Mihoko Higuchi tell you?
A: She told me "I'll stay as the biggest supporter of you. I'll root for you whatever happens. Good luck!"

Q: What kind of results do you want to leave in 2019-2020 season?
A: I want to leave better results than before for the sake of Machiko-sensei, Mihoko-sensei, people who will work with me in the future, and above all for the sake of myself. Working on my own makes me think that I need to improve up to a higher level than before. Last season it was like "results, results" but this year it's more like "I want to discover my own skating."

Q: Did the consistencies on 4Lz and 4Lo improve during the camp in Russia?
A: Not at all. I had no successful 4Lo and I didn't work on 4Lz at all.

Q: What did you get during the Russian camp, on the technical side?
A: I don't think there will be many opportunities to use 3Lo on the second half of a combo, but when I tried it, I felt "I might be able to do it if I work on it." Although I didn't acquire any new jumps at all, I felt I could make the camp a turning point to think "I want to try (a new jump)!"

Q: What about 4T on the second half of a combo?
A: Since 4T was the jump that I had already acquired, I could do it in Russia, too. I think the consistencies on 4F and 4S are more important than the consistency on 4T when it comes down to doing 3A-4T combo in my program.

Q: Are you excited about your new environments?
A: Maybe it's not the answer to the question that you asked, but I've only skated the competitive programs choreographed by Mihoko-sensei so far. I skated the exhibition numbers choreographed by David-san [Wilson] and Shae-Lynn-san, though. There are good points of Mihoko-sensei as well as there are good points of Divid-san and Shae-Lynn-san. Every choreographer has his/her own personality. It's just the same as every skater has his/her own personality. Also, I've usually used very competition musics for competitive programs so far. But for this season I'll probably skate programs that people might think "Aren't they exhibition programs?" in competitions. It's not a done deal yet, though.

Q: Your new programs are not made yet?
A: Not yet. My new FS is to be choreographed by Daivid and SP by Shae-Lynn. David sent me two musics and asked me "Which do you like?" I answered "This one," but I have no clue about the name of the musics. (laugh) I just can say it sounded like a music for exhibitions.

Q: Is your new SP by Shae-Lyn the same style?
A: My new SP is a dynamic and hard one. It's a verrrry Shae-Lynn program. I'll show it after we finished working on it.

Q: You had paintings on your face when you skated 'Great Spirits' by Shae-Lynn.
A: That made me jump out of the nut-shell. That said, I had the paintings in dark rinks for shows. I can't imagine how things will work when I skate that type of program (like 'Great Spirit') in a lightened-up rink, especially under the pressures of competitions. But I'd say I'm more excited than I'm worrying. I'm actually more excited than I expected. I'm looking forward to skating my new programs and I wish so is everyone.

Q: As for the exhibition-like programs you mentioned, did you try any new methods to work on the choreography?
A: I have not worked on choreography, yet.

Q: Do you think you'll try anything new in the choreography?
A: This is not that I'm complaining about rules, but now in the current era jumps are centered in competitive programs. You can't win if you can't jump. It's not fun if you can't win... Me too have skated programs which focused on jumps for years. Transitions were transitions for jumps and not transitions for the program. The other day I discussed with David in S Korea. I told him "The program I want to make is not 'a program for jumps' but 'a program to build up with my own creativity'". It was my first time to tell my opinion about a new program. I did so since I wanted to show my own personality as well as wanted to enjoy myself by skating the program in competitions.

Q: Will you use Chukyo University's rink as your home-rink until your new overseas base is decided?
A: At this point I don't know what happens in the future, but the next place to go in my plan is Stephane's [Lambiel] camp. I don't have any other plan to go abroad at this point. I'll train in Chukyo University's rink during the rest of the season. [Takeshi] Honda-sensei is not my main coach but I asked him to teach me jumps several times per a month.

Q: You haven't decided your new main coach, right?
A: Probably I can't decide my new main coach within this season. New season is starting too soon. I feel for the coach if he/she is asked to accompany me to all the competitions with this very short term of preparations. Probably he/she wouldn't know what to do with me. Thus, I'll train on my own here at Chukyo University for a while and take enough time to find and ask the coach to work with me.

Q: Are you nervous or excited? What kind of feeling is the strongest in you?
A: I don't have any fears since I think I can train on my own.
