The Shibutanis Thread Cinco...Mambo!

The Shibs got a medal with NO help with this effing panel. That FD was 116-117 at least. From the TE to the individual FD, the judges and callers have been trying to find ways to lowball the Shibs and they were put under a microscope in a way no other team was put in unless that team made major mistakes. Their whole career is like the judges and some fans trying to make fetch happen and the Shibs are always like "stop trying to make that happen, it's never going to happen!"

ITA. The Shibs have been the team that's most been under the microscope and they've always risen to the occasion. I'm so proud of them.

Wow I’m so happy for the Shibs right now!! They won bronze!! And so well-deserved!! I loved their FD tonight, I was totally into it. Loved the speed, energy & emotion, and it was very seamless and I didn’t notice any little errors at all. Everything looked really effortless. I definitely was expecting a higher score, and I’m a little disappointed they were denied a higher score by the judges, but they won bronze anyway and convincingly so. They are the owners of 3 World medals and 2 Olympic medals!! amazing!! :cheer2:

It's nice that they keep proving their critics wrong.

I mentioned this before but it seems to me that they have more haters/critics than what's typical. I might expect that from a team like Grishuk & Platov since they were the #1 team from 94 to 98 and both their style and her personality polarized viewers at that time. But I don't see what's so polarizing or unlikeable about the Shibs.

Ah well, they have their results and their amazing performances which speak for themselves.

One thing I keep seeing from regular people on social media is that they all loved the Coldplay FD because people felt like they kept seeing nothing but heteronormative sex on the ice and the Shibs offered something fresh and new to them. The Shibs took a risk by doing another Coldplay dance AND got a lot of flack by the ice dance aficionados online, but they were so smart with their choice (like V/M) and they knew they were not playing for the niche ice dance crowd but for general audiences. And the Shibs certainly captured the imagination and attention of people.

They really did. They went with their gut instinct and it paid off very well. It was probably their best free dance.

I picked on them for the trilogy - primarily because I thought it would hurt with the judges. That was the ice dance crowd to be concerned about imo. But they improved on it all season - and I think doing the team event helped hone all their levels.

I ugly cried really hard tonight during the Shibs skate, it was absolutely fabulous. Scores aside, this was the best I have ever seen them skate, in the SD and in the FD. They gave everything they could to the ice and to the audience. They deserve that medal so much, I'm so happy for them.

Btw, I've been so sick all season of hearing how the Shibs should lose because they don't have THE SEX and look like little kids. I get we like our sexualized females in ice dance, but that whole idea is so heteronormative and regressive AF.

I think it puts them at a little disadvantage, and that just proves how good they are to still rise up and be among the top teams. :)
