The Shibutanis Thread Cinco...Mambo!

The Shibs got a medal with NO help with this effing panel. That FD was 116-117 at least. From the TE to the individual FD, the judges and callers have been trying to find ways to lowball the Shibs and they were put under a microscope in a way no other team was put in unless that team made major mistakes. Their whole career is like the judges and some fans trying to make fetch happen and the Shibs are always like "stop trying to make that happen, it's never going to happen!"

Cool for the Shibs. I loved that program and I was really feeling it. They overcame, but I'm just not happy that Hub/Don were left off the team, and now they leave with no medal and the Shibs have two. It doesn't seem fair to me. I know that figure skating isn't fair. USFS was in a bind re team selection and I guess they thought H/D had a good chance for the individual medal. I'm happy for the Shibs but upset for Hub/Don.

V/M brung it as usual, but I just didn't feel the same emotion that I felt for P/C's work of art. V/M have enough medals and didn't really need another gold.

They looked exhausted in the box with PC. They gave it everything. And it was worth it!!! There is going to be so much joy on SM tonight and tomorrow! Congrats, Maia and Alex! You reached Paradise and you're double Olympic medalists! And congrats to Shibmama and papa too!

Since you brought that up, I think this FD, 2017 Worlds, and a bunch of other competitions proved that the Shibs were the best bet for the FD in the Team Event. Going into the third day, the U.S. almost lost the bronze to Italy.

Yep, I don't have any problem with the Shibs doing the FD for the team event, and US fed as I said did not want to keep either Adam or Mirai off the team, so they had little choice. Shibs would have won Nats too except they were a little set back by what had happened at GPF, and they were likely feeling for their friend Ross (he was not selected for the Olympics on the same day Shibs had to skate their FD). Also, Shibs hadn't worked out issues with their FD by Nats. I think that both of H/D's programs were very strong and their FD was better than the Shibs' for most of the season. Here there was just that slight error by Zach, but I'm not sure why they lost so much when the scoring was so close in the SD.

I just really feel for H/D. They were U.S. National champs and they leave with nothing.

I'm conflicted because the Shibs were so great, and I felt their hearts in that program.

I'm still reeling it in. Everybody all season were saying how the Shibs were finished. In the TE we had people laughing at their scores saying their chances for an individual medal was over. People were gleeful and entitled and adopting narratives to paint the Shibs as these artificial people whose success and results were only due to their publicity machine and that they bought their success ignoring their entire career and how hard they worked to build up their fanbase since 2012. I said it all season, they may try to deny the Shibs but they refuse to lay down and die. If they did, their career would have been finished by as late as 2014. They kept going for it even when they had less than ideal results. They didn't bitch and moan and say arrogant affirmations. They kept quiet, never openly complained, and just kept working and improving little by little and gained survival skills to deal with being lowballed over and over again. They also learned how to compete under pressure and that seriously served them well tonight.

Only 2 skaters could be substituted after the short programs, so the choice was subbing in men's and ladies. They could have had H/D sub, then someone else wouldn't have been on the team. We could make a list of "not fair" but the team event, unfortunately, is limited.
