The Good News Thread

Not sure where this belongs, so I am inserting it in this thread.

Yesterday I got back from another visit to Alaska. This time I took three family members along because I had enjoyed it so much last year! They enjoyed it too. We took a 5-hour cruise from Anchorage to see glaciers, we rode an aerial tram at one of the resorts, visited the wildlife center, visited Denali National park, panned for gold in Fairbanks, visited the ice museum there, and after my guests left (on an earlier flight) I took a tiny float trip on the river, and visited the museum at the University of Alaska. All in all it was time well spent.

I love Alaska so much- at least in summer! I almost feel like trying for work there and make a move there. Not sure if I can handle the cold and the dark days though.

Acts of kindness are rare these days, particularly by top athletes. We read about top athletes getting in some kind of troubles, but this story about Cam Newton, quarterback of the Carolina Panthers, is completely the opposite.

A couple in Baltimore, went for an after dinner stroll, and they saw Cam Newton give a bag of food to a homeless man. Cam and some of his teammates had just come out of a restaurant after dinner. Cam didn't give the homeless man leftovers; apparently he ordered extra food to go. He did it quietly, secretly, without drawing any attention to himself. His teammates say that he does things like this frequently.

That's a nice young man, and he happens to be a great athlete and the reigning NFL regular season MVP. I will root for him.

A special person...Cam Newton! :respec:

(BUT...MY HEART STILL BREAKS FOR HIS SUPERBOWL RESULT):(

This month starts my GS-12 (federal government) - I started at my agency as a GS-09 and worked my @#$ off and put up with a lot that no one else would have and was selected for a promotion. Now I can start saving for a nice vacation and pay off my student loan even faster! :D

Congratulations! You deserve that vacation.

This is not necessarily a good news, but some of you may know Craig Sager of the NBA. He interviews players after games. He has an aggressive form of Leukemia, and he recently received a third bone marrow transplant from Charles Barkley. His prognosis is still not good but it's nice to hear that others are stepping up to save Craig Sager's life.

*** Florida State University football player eats lunch with Autistic student sitting alone :

A friend of mine sent this beautiful picture to me today and when I saw it with the caption "Travis Rudolph is eating lunch with your son" I replied "who is that?" He said "FSU football player", then I had tears streaming down my face. Travis Rudolph, a wide receiver at Florida State, and several other FSU players visited my sons school today. I'm not sure what exactly made this incredibly kind man share a lunch table with my son, but I'm happy to say that it will not soon be forgotten. This is one day I didn't have to worry if my sweet boy ate lunch alone, because he sat across from someone who is a hero in many eyes.
I saw a follow-up story on the news that said many students are now sitting with Bo at lunch & have befriended him because of this.

OK---you will have to let me know if this is not the "good" news that belongs in this thread. This is a shout-out for British SAS troops and one man in particular. The Mirror is reporting that American and British troops have been looking for a particularly sadistic ISIS executioner who liked to put prisoners in cages and kill them with a flamethrower. He and his crew were getting ready to do this to several Syrians who had been deemed "disloyal" when the Brits found him. With a single shot, at about 1000 yards way, the SAS soldier hit the flame throwing equipment which then exploded and burned this man and his crew to death. A commando raid then freed the prisoners. To those men that died I say Karma is a bitch, baby.

So I've always loved Lynn Johnston's "For Better or For Worse" comic strip and I love her specials that aired on television---particularly the two Christmas shows and the Halloween show. I had them on ancient VCR tapes and thought I could purchase them years ago but it turns out it was other programs. Well now I see the website is offering all of those half hour specials. Most are on one dvd and "The Bestest Present" which came out first is offered alone. I'm glad they are not lost forever and I've ordered them.
