One of the comments from Smart that I thought was interesting was how she didn't follow skating before 2015 - she didn't know who any of the top skaters were & she never watched skating until she went to the 2015 World Championships.

I think that's relatively common, at least in the UK. I hear comments from parents & kids at my rink that make it very clear that they have no idea where their capabilities would fit within the international standard.

Yep, that was my experience too!

That was why I took Tiff to compete in an international solo competition before moving to France.
I wanted a reality check, to see if I was wasting my time or not.

Enjoyed 4CC dance event. Kind of nice having the big shots out of the way for a change. I have questions. We get BeeGees and Rocket Man and ABBA. But why no Donna Summer medley? Or, the greatest hits of Captain and Tenniel? We get Hip Hop rhythm dances. But, why no double bump pattern. Hopefully these things will get an airing after Olys.

Well, Hawayek/Baker are using a remix of Donna Summer's "Bad Girls." But I agree, an entire medley of Donna Summer would've been fun. :)

Andreeva, Makarova, Krauziene and Molina were at Sochi 2014 too.
Sobkov and Makarova were also at PyeongChang 2018.
Makarova was also on Turin 2006 panel. She is the daugher of Ludmilla Mikhailovskaya who was a member of ISU Ice Dance Technical Committee decades ago.
Krauziene was also on the panel in 2010.

Krauziene was once reprimanded because she spent half of the Pair FS at 2016 Nepela Trophy loudly chatting with Babenko.
“J1 and J2 talked amongst themselves during the event. They were not speaking in English. This began during the program of the team that was third to skate and continued throughout the second warm up and subsequent performances….
“Subsequent to the Pairs Team from Great Britain skating there appeared to be a lot of conversation between Judge 1 and Judge 2 seated on the judging panel. The competition resumed and the conversation continued between the 2 judges"
“During the Pairs FS, judge 1 and judge 2 began talking quite loudly after the British team missed a lift. Judges 3 - 6 looked at that direction, nearly in unison, as the distraction was so severe. After the skaters finished their program the referee walked behind us and spoke to judge 7 in Russian, making him laugh. Judges 1 and 2 continued to talk.”
“During the program of Wilkinson / Boyadij I heard a conversation between judge 1 and judge 2. I could not understand what they talked about because it was not in English. I was irritated and it disturbed me. The referee joined the conversation after a few seconds. I could not understand anything because they talked also not in English.

Cesaro had the ISU ID Technical Committe putting a case of national bias case against her for her marks for Guignard/Fabbri at Euros 2020 and for Portesi Peroni/Chrastecky (vs Terreux/Perron) at Junior Worlds 2020. She won because a) the technical committee doesn't know ISU rules and filled the complaint about Euros after the deadline b) she managed to justify the GOEs/PCS to PP/C and got away with "evidences remains at the level of suspicion".

So, looking at the list of officials/judges - it would seem that, unlike Sochi & Pyeongchang, the same tech panel will be used in the TE as the individual events.

Confirmed that Japan withdrew their ID judge.
Russia will get their spot in the ID Team Event panel.
No additions to the "individual" ID event panel. In the case of later withdrawal such as this one, it is possible to do a draw "out of a pool of ISU Members, already drawn and having named Judges in any of the other disciplines for the Olympic Winter Games and willing to serve in the discipline in question as their second event".
They did it in Pairs but not for ID. Looking at the names for Single/Pair, I think only Azerbajan (Kliushnikov) and Czech Republic (Misurec) could have been an option. Czech judges are not willing to serve in 2 panels, because the Pair WD was them and didn't try to use the same judge twice (or maybe they didn't realize it was possibly for Olympics as it is not allowed in ISU Championships).

In yesterday's post, I put Andreeva as ID judge for Russia but it is either her or Fomina as both are in the list of nominations and are qualified for ID at Olympic level.

Oh wow. Do we know how Russia got assigned the spot? Was it based on which competing countries didn't already have a judge on the panel?

This will really help SinKats keep the North American teams at bay in the Rhythm Dance.

Interesting that Russia gets the TE judging spot... wonder how that was determined.

A part of me is joking that that Japan just gave up on ice dance politicking to get them some extra points for the TE points total after Nationals.
Japan could have given itself points by leaving its judge in the team event. The Japanese dance team has a bunch of points on the line for their team. They do have a member on the tech panel. Higashino was on the panel in 2019 when K&K missed the FD cut also. She has been on 2 Worlds panels and now an Olympic panel in this quadrennium. Seems incredible even when you take into account the rule that none of the top contenders' countries are to have a member of their country on the tech panel.

Japan have only 1 ISU Ice Dance judge. So they are very dependant on her being available. If for whatever reasons (Covid, work, etc), she decides not to come, they can't replace her.

Thanks for having reminded the recent rule about top 5 contenders not being on the TP. I totally forgot about it. That also answers one thing I wondered about the Single/Pair panels for Beijing.

Indeed, 2 Worlds and 1 Olympic in 4 years (given that 1 edition of Worlds has been cancelled) is quite a lot.

The number of ISU specialists (35 in total) by ISU member is

Canada 3 (Marie Bowness, Rock LeMay, Laurean Senft)
Great Britain 3 (Doreen Hoppe, Helen Prior, Candice Towler-Green)
Italy 3 (Francesca Fermi, Maurizio Margaglio, Fabrizio Pedrazzini)
Ukraine 3 (Olga Akimova, Sergei Baranov, Maria Tumanoskaya)
USA 3 (Judy Blumberg, Julia Rey, Philipp Rey)
Poland 3 (Joanna Budner, Dostatni, Sylvia Nowak)
Russia 3 (Petr Durnev, Svetlanda Lyapina, Denis Samokhin)
Australia 2 (Maria Borounov, Monica MdDonald)
Japan 2 (Ayako Higashino, Nakako Tsuzuki)
Slovakia 2 (Slavka Grincova, Tomas Kika)
Azerbaijan 1 (Kristin Fraser)
Belarus 1 (Anna Krytskaya)
Finland 1 (Pia Maria Gustafsson)
France 1 (Roxane Petetin)
Hungary 1 (Gyorgy Elek)
Israel 1 (Galit Chait)
Netherlands 1 (Marie Louise Gijtenbeek)
South Korea 1 (Yang Tae Hwa)

Dostanti and Bowness did Turin 2006
Humphreys-Baranova (not active as TS anymore) and Fermi did Vancouver 2010
Elek and Higashino did Sochi 2014
Grinkova and Yang did PyeongChang 2018

I think some of the 35 have never called at ISU Championships level. Obviously, some of them are limited by being coach of some entries (Margaglio, Durnev, Chait, ..) or being relative of some of them (Lyapina, but she has been used for 4CC or Jr Worlds).

I see Victoria MANNI / Carlo Antonio Guido ROETHLISBERGER listed as Italy in the Egna Dance Trophy entry list.
They used to skate for Switzerland. She is Italian, her mother is Franca Bianconi.

So is it why they didn't enter any competitions this fall while seemingly still training? Assuming it is not a typo.
I am not sure it opens more opportunities though. The scores Portesi Peroni/Chrastecky got in September were already higher than what M/R usually got in international competitions and not lower than Tessari/Walker's scores (who would now have a free route in Switzerland).
