The Dance Hall 9: Bring the Bling or No Beijing 2021-2022

An article about Jimmy Manners, the hip hop choreographer used by a few US teams, notably Green & Parsons.

Beyond teaching his students the hip-hop moves, Manners has been adamant about providing additional education on the history, culture and vocabulary of hip-hop. By providing the background of moves and techniques, Manners believes it can help a dancer "channel a character authentically."
The above is one of my favorite parts, because I always look for this in a performance. The more a dancer understands the dance, the more they can show in the performance. Really hope more ice dancers work with choreographers like this and learn the most about each type of dance they perform.

Perhaps if Piper and Paul have retired they will choose the Maple Leaf March for the 2023/24 season since Worlds will be in Montreal

Are Yanovskaya / Lukács taking a break/reflecting about the future for the rest of the season?
They haven't competed after Nebelhorn.
A couple of other teams haven’t competed since Nebelhorn either - Is there any news on Min/Eaton (I think they were also rumoured to be taking a break / considering their future but I don’t remember anything being confirmed) or Zhata/Akalin?

Did the British Championships air on anything other than the remarkably hilarious online feed? The commentators thought the 2021 World Championships were part of this season and were therefore incorporating F/G’s Lion King freedance into a discussion on how that program has been evolving from the World’s rendition.

Does anyone know if Turkkila & Versluis are planning to continue after the Olympics? I was just looking at the list of countries with multiple berths in dance at Europeans & thinking that it would be nice for Finland to earn two.

I’m a bit confused about the rise in scores for the Armenian team this season… are they much better than before?

I went and watched both performances and Reed / Ambrulevicius were on fire whereas Hawayek / Baker were quite laboured so it's nice to see the results reflect the skates I guess!
yes, and it helps that r/a got all 4 kp's (while h/b got yynn) in the mb section and a higher level in midline steps
(i've really enjoyed this rd from r/a since they debuted it, so good to see them skate it so well here :cheer2:-- and allison looks hot in that cat suit!)

I find the music choice doesn't work for H/B. It's a bit cringey.

I LOVE both their RD and FD! I am a bit sad for H/B but also delighted for R/A!

They have said several times that their main goal is the next Olympics in 2026.
Well, that sounds good. There's something to root for then as a team. How high would T&V need to place at Europeans to earn the second berth? Tenth?

Am I completely out of touch or is Reed/Ambrulevicus leading Hawayek/Baker at the Golden Spin somewhat unexpected?
Definitely unexpected in that Hawayek & Baker defeated Reed & Ambrulevicius by over 2 points in the RD at Rostelecom.

But also, not too surprising in that H&B came into Golden Spin with the pressure of expectations to win (can be tough). Plus, I don't think their RD is fully cooked yet. I didn't think so at Rostelecom & they've had little time to work on it as they were signed up for this. Anyway, the free looks more polished at this stage.

I watched the two RD videos today and have no problem with the results. I would really like R&A's program, but I still think it needs to be sharper to fully reach its potential.

I am wondering whether this upset in the RD might be enough to make H&B have to deliver in order to earn high scores over their competition at Nationals. We'll see.

I was :( to find that there are almost no videos from the RD & FD searchable on youtube. A bunch of pairs & most of the men's SPs, but I've only found the 2 RDs and H&B's FD. (I need to re-up my Golden Skate pass).

I know I'm late to the party, but I must say the young French team of Lop/Bri has my interest. Dare they move to IAM in the new season? They have the skills to go far. Still cannot stand their RD, but their FD has really grown, real character and intrigue in their movements. They know how to dance, that must be a plus, right?

well she's Russian and they're based out of Moscow, they currently work with Roxane Petetin, Fabian Bourzat and Zhulin so I can't see that move happening

The weekend brings us to the second stage of Spanish Dance battle.

I was wondering about who would have been invited to fill up the panels as Spanish Fed usually don't have enough people.
The names have been now published.

Technical panel: Dutch Marie-Louise Gijtenbeek as TS (Rostelecom Cup, Warsaw Cup, NRW Trophy, Nice Trophy and Lombardia Trophy this year) and Italian Valeria Rosa as TC (she is not TC at international level). ATS is Spanish.

Panel of judges: 3 Spanish judges (their usual 2 ID international judges + 1 of their single/pair international judges), Buchanan from Great Britain and Grampelhuber from Austria.

It’s such a shame that Spain doesn’t have two spots as both teams are fairly even and worthy of representing the country at the Olympics.

Question about Diaz and Hurtado. In the ‘On Edge’ docudrama, Diaz made a somewhat cryptic, sideways comment about he and Hurtado having very different ideas about training. Did they ever discuss exactly what those differences are?

I don't think I've ever seen Diaz comment on that split at all until now. Hurtado said at the time that they really tried and just couldn't make it work.

Spanish federation should have sent H/K to post-Olympic Worlds in 2018. I think there's a good chance they'd have gotten that second spot, and it's easier to maintain a second spot than to earn one with two teams at that level.

I remember something to the effect that Sara was very training oriented and extremely focussed on her skating career. I don't want to imply that he wasn't, but maybe to a lesser degree. I think it got conflictual enough that one of them had to leave the Montreal Team.
Take it with a grain of salt ... I can't back this up with actual comments.

Yes this was also my remembering of their split. That Adrian wasn't serious enough in his training according to Sara's eyes. Maybe it was just a side comment of a poster here though, I can't back it up with sources either.

Sounds like they just had different training methods and processes.
