Resurrecting this thread as I am finally back to posting some skating after a long hiatus.

Firstly, a really cool montage of footage I put together years ago and for some reason never posted. It's all pre-war skaters and is really a tribute to the early pioneers of the sport containing footage from the early 1900's through to 1939.

We all owe this next lady a huge debt of gratitude. It was Janet Sawbridge who, having turned to coaching after retiring from her own competitive career as an international ice dancer, had the idea to try out two young skaters together training in Nottingham. Their names? Jayne Torvill & Christopher Dean. Their legacy stems from Janet's initial foresight to see their potential together. And I for one am hugely grateful!! But Janet had a stellar career of her own. From 1963 to 1974; a phenomenally long career for the time, Janet was one of the most successful ice dancers in the world. She was a multiple British Champion and World and European medallist, but what makes Janet's career so unique is that she was able to stay at the very top of the sport with three different partners and without ever missing a season. Twelve consecutive world championships with three different partners!! Each of her three skating partnerships won medals at the highest levels of international competition; a unique achievement in skating. Here, Janet and her third partner Peter Dalby skate to the bronze medal at the 1972 European Championships behind the shock result of the decade when the Bucks beat Pakhomova & Gorshkov. This includes the medal ceremony (where I am living for Ludmilla's bevel) for quite obvious reasons. Who WAS that man? I uploaded this for Janet herself and I'm proud to have been able to get to know this fabulous lady!

If Janet's Wiki page is correct, it's crazy that she competed in the one season with two different partners.

Janet placed 6th at the 1971 European Championships with Jon Lane, then a month or so later was 5th with her new partner, Peter Dalby, at the 1971 World Championships

Thank you for sharing your amazing archive with us, @floskate

That's not right. Jon retired at the end of the 1969 season having skated with her from 1966. He now coaches in Canada and his wife is Carol Lane, the commentator and ice dance coach.

Janet teamed up with Peter Dalby in the 1969 off season and competed through to 1974 together.

I found it odd, to say the least. That certainly makes more sense now. Thank you for clarification.

I think someone needs to alert Janet's Wiki page. Or at least, how I interpreted her successive partnerships.

Given Jon Lane's connection to Janet (and how she suggested T & D pair up), I wonder how influenced Carol Lane was by Torvill & Dean in choosing the music from Mack & Mabel for Piper and Paul this season.

Carol competed against Torvill and Dean. She said in one of the interviews that she decided to retire when she saw their Mack and Mable, it was that good. T&D are also her favourite ice dance team.

Speaking of Torvill & Dean here is probably byhe rarest film if their early skating. To find any recordings of OSPs back in the 1970's is hard enough but early OSP's by T&D? Impossible.....

Until now!! Here they are skating to the Masquerade Waltz on their way to winning their first National title (1979 British Championship) which took place in November 1978. Super rare and super gorgeous.

Even at this early stage of their career, some of the trademark T & D styling is already evident.

I'm reminded of their famous Pasa Doble OSP Cape Dance from watching this YouTube video, too.

Yes, floskate has the men's free skates from 1971 Europeans for Ondrej Nepela and Yuri Ovchinnikov as well.

For the women, it's Christine Errath and Sonja Morgenstern (earlier linked in this thread).

Thanks for the shout out @Seerek! Haig's freeskate in Zurich was among his best performances. It was an interesting championships in all events and I hope to be posting more from the competition in the coming weeks :)

In the meantime here are some new uploads from my collection:

This is a real find!! Scott Allen remains the youngest ever mens Olympic medallist in figure skating after winning the mens bronze medal in 1964 aged just 14. A year later he won the world silver medal having just turned 16 in Colorado Springs. Unfortunately ABC only showed the last minute of what actually was a brilliant performance but finally here it is in its entirety;

Inspired by @floskate's find of T&D's 1979 Masquerade Waltz OSP, I hoped to find their 1979-80 Foxtrot OSP, but no luck. However:

Linichuk & Karponosov's - much more interesting than their FD for me :)
Natalia Linichuk Gennadi Karponosov OSP olys 1980 Fox Trot

I've watched this program many times because of the beauty and presentation. The Pairs couple is Elena Bechke & Denis Petrov. They performed to the music, Romance, at the 1996 US Pro Championship.

Their skating was eloquent, and their inside death spiral was amazing.

All we have of their OSP is the Olympic version, but that's only partial.

But by 1984 not only had they conquered the free dance they had conquered the OSP section, with this amazing Paso Doble at the 84 Olympics!

Looking for a way to pass the time while you're trying to avoid Covid-19? Then take a trip down memory lane!!

Here's a brilliant performance from way back in 1968 by Canadian Jay Humphry whose marks caused such a ruckus that the next skater, Gary Visconti ended up having a Dorothy Hamill 1974 Worlds moment all his own!

1968 Olympics - Jay Humphry FS

And speaking of the lovely Gary Visconti - here he is skating one of his best performances outdoors in the glorious winter sunshine of Davos. Love these old outdoor skating videos!!!

My good friend and still the last British lady to medal at a major ISU international - silver at the 1973 Europeans - Jean Scott a year earlier in Gothenburg.

1972 Europeans - Jean Scott FS

I've been posting some "before they were famous" videos recently. Here's the wonderful Jan Hoffmann with possibly the worst haircut ever seen on ice.....and it's always fun to watch Frau Muller and her multitude of hairstyles over the years while waiting for the marks. :glamor:

The media darling of Grenoble wasn't just Peggy Fleming. There was also the very small matter of the youngest participant in the event. To this day she remains the third youngest ever skater aged 11 years and 168 days to compete in figure skatign at the winter Olympics. Ahead of her are Cecilia Colledge and Megan Taylor who were both younger 11's in Lake Placid in 1932. Sonja was an older 11 in Chamonix 1924. It's a shame this little lady didn't have a longer career because she had great charisma.

1968 Olympics - Beatrice Hustiu FS

Ever wondered when the first ever 3-3 combination was performed? Then wonder no more. Many will remember Grzegorz Filipowski from teh 1980's. He had a very long career from 1980 to 1992 and now coaches Roman Sadovsky along with his partner Tracey Wainman in Canada. Tracey was the youngest ladies competitor and here making his own bit of history was the youngest mens competitor...

1980 Worlds - Grzegorz Filipowski FS
https://youtu.be/ECSCi11G0Ko

And here's the star of the 1980's in the 1970's as a just turned 13 debutant at the 1979 Europeans....

Thank you so much @floskate for sharing this treasure trove of historic figure skating videos! And I thank you, @skatesindreams because I do remember all of the research and sharing of your fabulous video collection while at MKF!! I know this goes far and beyond the collection I have which only dates back to the 1992 Olympics, and I still haven't had the chance to make videos of the rest that's on my VHS tapes.

So this is very much a treat and pleasure to enjoy watching!

Watching some of these older programs makes me lament the musical changes in skating. Ladies’ free-skating programs used to be so classy...what got me into watching skating in the first place! Exhibit A: Kumiko Sato in Grenoble ‘68 (another gem from @floskate ).

Unable to post link...saw it beneath little Beatrice’s.
