The ALL NEW Youtube thread!!

What was Trixie's LP placement in 72? I can't believe that there weren't at least 8 other LP peformances better than that. The whole performance looked like that of a very good adult figure skater, not one who was World and Olympic chamion.

Do you mean at the Olympics? She was 7th in the LP. At Europeans she was 5th in the LP which is what this clip is and I believe at Worlds in Calgary she ended up 9th in the LP but I would have to check on that one.

Compare that performance of Trixie Schuba at 1972 Europeans to that of Sonja Morgenstern at the same competition - Sonja did awesome in the free skating and won the bronze overall. Sonja even had a 3 salchow - pretty rare for 1972.

Klára Engi and Attila Tóth, 1992 Challenge of Champions - The Feeling Begins

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3cuD6aK778

Engi & Toth were 6 time Hungarian Dance Champions.

I LOVE this program! They also skated it at euros and olympics in 1992. When anyone puts up one of those "Who has the best 'The Feeling Begins'" polls, I'm always pissed that it's not included. This program is so well researched and constructed, with moves incoprorated right out of the Sema that's performed by the Whirling Dervishes. More info available here http://www.mevlana.net/sema.htm

I really liked Engi &Toth's Feeling Begins too)

I also liked Engi & Toth's Ragtime program:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woAG0rs9Ugs

And while we're remembering Engi and Toth, their muppet show exhibition (with them dressed as Kermy and Miss Piggy) was a total classic. I couldn't find it on youtube though.

I didn't know she had her face shattered and skated for a year in a mask while reconstructive surgery was in progress

You know I saw the Muppet Show program once, I wonder if I have it d/led somewhere!!!!!! That Ragtime program made me remember that once upon a time you used different styles of movement to actually interpret the music. I'll always miss that, there just isn't much dance in ice dance of any kind anymore...

I didn't know she had such a horrible facial injury, either, that's horrifying:eek:

Of work ill so I thought I'd upload some oldies again. But these really are OLD!!!!!

1932 Winter Olympics Lake Placid - Practice session footage
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FcjyqZx_2f4

Anyone know if the tall girl with dark hair is Maribel Vinson Owen?

1948 Winter Olympics St Moritz - Dick Button & Barbara Ann Scott
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=46bHRVndot0

This is such a great clip in lovely colour. Very good quality.

1952 Winter Olympics Oslo - Dick Button
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZR1CKZCw4tE

Again a great clip - Uncle Dick's skating is just amazing in this. :swoon:

1960 Winter Olympics Squaw Valley - Vinson Owen family and Pairs
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zTgEQCq_JY4

Amazing footage of 3 generations of Vinson's just one year before Maribel's Mother lost all 3 of them. Breaks your heart to think of it when you watch this. The pairs shown are the Ludingtons, Kilius & Baumler, the Jelineks and Wagner & Paul in that order. Ignore the narrator who's researcher should be shot ;)

1960 Winter Olympics - Carol Heiss and David Jenkins LP Hilites
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esMOC6coY8U

David Jenkins' skating = :respec: :swoon: There just are not enough superlatives. He was unbelievable!!!!

Enjoy :)

No wonder why Uncle Dick harps on female skaters with bad turnouts. He had a better turnout than all of them.

Maribel Sr. was still in great shape in 1960.

He sure did, and flexibility. I have a picture somewhere of Dick doing a split jump but in a ballet style with his front leg parallel and the back leg turned out. He has a 180 split and the leg line is amazing!!

Thanks so much for sharing all of these very special clips; all are amazing! I too would give anything to see more of David Jenkins' skating; far ahead of his time.

Kwan's 96 SP at Worlds, sans commentary.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYBeIqsE-qs&feature=related

Honestly, the best SP in terms of musicality, choreography, and character EVER. I am no Kwaniac, but watching that program for the first time years ago made me a fan of Michelle's skating for life!

The camera angles, lack of commentary, and her fantastic movement to the music on this particular night just DO IT for me!

Oh yeah this SP is fantastic. MK poise in this program, for a 15 yo (!) is amazing. She really feels the music in this performance and maybe this is this particular program that set MK as a huge potentialy legendary skater.
And I'm not a fan of her !
I think this period (1996-1999) is her best. She had great programs and came onto the world stage with her unique and recognizable style.

Romanza is my favorite MK short program. I love the music and choreography! Its nice seeing it commentator free. :)

Ewwwwww . . . yes . . . John Tesh . . . the worst Olympic sport commentator ever, credited with single-handedly ruining the entire NBC 1996 Olympic Gymnastics Broadcast . . . that was his masterpiece . . . before that he would just ruin National, European and World Championships in various sports . . . mostly by saying with authority things that were completely wrong that his former athlete partners could not hope to correct gracefully and would have to hold their tongues in obviously disgust.

Tesh was bad.

You should have heard him, trying to saying the following (which he practiced by repeating for 15 minutes prior to each broadcast and then still screwing it up)

This is John Tesh and John Mischa Petkevich, coming to you from the 1984 World Figure skating Championships in Ottawa, Canada.

He couldn't say Mischa and couldn't say Petkevich, and he had a heck of a time with Ottawa, too. (We sat next to the CBS booth, and Tesh was a total PIA)

Jumpin' Joe Sabovcik 1986 Euros LP

Not only did Josef become Euro Champ, he landed the first quad in competition. Yeah, yeah, I know officially Kurt gets credit for this, but I truly felt Sabovcik's quad here should have been ratified. But what do I know?

Thanks. :kickass:
How were the jumps "ratified" back then? Going by the marks, the majority of judges thought it was okay and gave him credit for it....wouldn't the ISU not acknowledging it rend the results irregular.

He overly dramatized even the smallest thing that it got hard to take his commentating seriously.

I do think he's a genius as far as fluff pieces are concerned though, he's good at that.

I was watching Reflections on Ice this weekend and decided to make a montage of Cecilia Colledge. She was such a pioneer of the sport. As well as being the youngest ever Olympian - a record that still stands, she executed the first double jump (salchow) at the 1936 Europeans, she invented the layback spin, the camel spin as we know it and performed catch-foot variations that are still seen today as well as also creating the one-foot axel which should be called a 'Colledge'. An amazing woman who worked tirelessly for the war effort in WW2, Cecilia returned to competition for one last time to win the National title in 1946, eleven years after winning her first British title. After two professional titles Cecilia moved to the US to train. She died in 2008. This is my tribute to this remarkable woman!!

Wow . . . that first face shot of her is gorgeous and the rest is incredibly moving, and, yes, her spins are very recognizable.

And at 15 years old Tara Lipinski was skating to Anastasia...:shuffle:
