Tessa Virtue & Scott Moir #48: Long Time Running

Thank you.
I couldn't tell whether Tessa and Scott understood the questions asked in French or whether they were given the questions in English ahead of time. Thoughts?
I think they had translation devices in their ears which gave them the questions in real time. That's my guess anyway.
I wish I knew how to turn on closed captioning in English :(

Yes, the English speaking guests on TLMP have translations devices in their ears, you can see Tessa adjusting hers at some point.

Well, I much preferred the TLMP show over their Ellen episode. It just felt too repetitive to questions they have answered so many times. I also would have preferred a different game where they really competed against each other and a better dance segment. Maybe just me but although I am a huge fan of Ellen and think Tessa and Scott did all they could, think the writers could have done better.

I also found the ellen show a bit ... repetitive and borderline embarrassing... I thought especially scott looked almost uncomfortable the whole time.
But maybe it was only hardcore followers found it so, those who saw all the same questions being asked for weeks now... Maybe the ellen audience is different (mainly american? ) from those that followed the whole canadian press tour, so not everyone feels it to be so exagerated...
Oh and the thing is they must be alright with being asked these questions as at interviews/shows at such level managements/reps actually do discuss what subjects are to be and not to be discussed in interviews. i´m pretty sure tessa/scott/their management has to give a nod of approval to all questions asked at interviews...

I suspect you are right that the audience is different and Tessa and Scott did gain international attention through an amazing amount of chemistry, so it is naturally going to be a big part of the dialogue. They always say they take it as a compliment to their storytelling in their skating but I think the bond between them is so tangible I see and feel it any time they are together. Scott could really teach a number of leading men how to show tenderness, sexual tension, and how to invoke all the feelings we women really crave. I felt Ellen was not as witty as usual and a different game would have been more fun and it just kind of ended abruptly. I also wish they had had a longer dance section - maybe some of their great hip hop moves like from the Prince short dance.

I watch stuff with closed captions all the time (in fact I really can't do without them, realizing how much dialogue I often miss otherwise).

It's easy - one of the buttons on the converter is to turn captions on or off. This is Telus, but if you have Shaw I'm sure it's the same. Should be in your manual, or you can give them a call. :)

You're talking about TV :-( I'm talking about the internet.

Nice to see them have such a great time on Ellen.

My takeaway? Ellen did not really seem to know who they were and their appearance was likely initiated by producers (who are maybe fans themselves) who saw their popularity on social media. Even so, I think producers underestimated how much of a draw they would be. They were not advertised at the beginning of the show despite having MILLIONS of hits on their intro dance the night before the broadcast. And in her intro, Ellen said specifically that Canadian fans campaigned for them to appear on her show, which is not quite true. From what I can see on social media and on this board, V/M have a strong, international reach !

The reason they were invited seems to be in large part due to the "shipping" on social media, so I'm not surprised that's where the big focus of their interview was. I think Ellen was telling a little white lie when she said that they would have appeared on her show even without the social media campaign, especially since it took a full month for them to appear (Adam Rippon appeared weeks ago). But she was polite and seemed to enjoy them, and more importantly, they seemed thrilled to be there. I feel like Scott was giddy and trying to contain his excitement. (I had to laugh when he said J.Lo because I couldn't help but notice that Tessa's hairstyle was reminiscent of J.Lo's hair circa-2000.)

I wish they'd done another game than the Newlywed game again. (Missed opportunities: A question about boxers or briefs, but no offer of Ellen underwear?? A mention that The Office is Scott's favourite show, but no mention that Ed Helms was the next guest?) But I was happy they had two segments.

Can I point out that they appeared on her show on March 20th? Olympic starting order 20 (twice) in year 20 of skating together. Can't wait to see what happens April 20th! :)

Saw them on that french canadian show, they were BRILLIANT. Tessa is brilliant. I am less in love with Scott than with Tessa. I wish I could be her. I'll miss them :(

Yes same here. Tessa said she wants to get her MBA. I will miss them very much too. They gave me a great appreciation for ice dancing that’s for sure.

Crowd’s reaction after Tessa and Scott’s score was announced in Pyeongchang https://twitter.com/kbrollshereyes/status/976654613012135936?s=21

Love this! This was a true Olympic Moment. But as convincing as their win appeared, I think people forget that they were second in the FD. The judges still tried to give gold to someone else despite V/M skating to their full potential. It's confusing to me - this is the kind of Olympic Performance people will talk about for years and it shot figure skating into the forefront of media coverage. And I think V/M's world record will be wiped out by generous judging towards the French either this week or next year.

Same here. Tessa has come into her own. It's not that there's anything wrong with Scott - it's that she is so extraordinary. Look at the way she won the TMEP audience by confidently complimenting them in French. From what I hear of people who've worked with them, they like Scott, but they are EFFUSIVE about Tessa. I wish I could be her friend. :p

I suspect the person running the Olympic channel has a crush on them too. They've been on two music Mondays and they've now come out with a tribute to them. (Do you hear this, ISU judges?)

Regarding the remark about Tessa and Scott's WR being overtaken this week, do figure skating WR scores even count for anything anymore? It seems anymore there is a new WR in every competition. It's not like when Torvill and Dean got straight perfect 6.0s and it stood as a record forever. We know they did it, they know they did it and I suppose that's the important thing.

Yeah, I don't think it really matters. And I doubt Tessa and Scott give it another thought. They've gotten everything they've aspired to.

Exactly. Jock radio DJs are talking about their appearance on Ellen like it is celebrity news. People are going to remember "Moulin Rouge" far beyond this year's season, whereas I think the only people who will remember PC's "Moonlight Sonata" are hardcore figure skating fans (P/C fans obviously, but also people like us who will remember it even if it is just in connection to the fight for Olympic gold). P/C fans would obviously come in and lynch me ( :lynch: ) for saying that and claim that they will always hold the WR, they won the FD, costume malfunction, blah blah blah, but as lovely as a program it was, it did not connect with the general audience or create an "Olympic Moment" the way VM's FD did, and that mattered in the end way more than a WR score that only serious figure skating fans really understand.

(Even though I still dislike the Moulin Rouge soundtrack in isolation and have no desire to ever see the movie, I do have to say that I get a lot of delight and snarky amusement out of the fact that in the entire pre-season, people were saying "Moonlight Sonata" was a classy, Olympic-worthy program while MR was tacky, cheap, whore-ish, totally the wrong choice, etc... and then look what happened in the end. :D)

Their biggest record is probably their 5 Olympic medals, 3 of them gold. Looking at the current medalists of 2018, Osmond would have to medal in the Team and individual in 2022 to tie (And would still lose with gold as tiebreaker). Med and Agitova and Hanyu would need to do 2 more Olympics to match or beat. Maybe Sui and Han can challenge if China improves in the Team.
