Royalty Thread #7: Do They Get Frequent Flier Miles?

All the British royals went to Sandringham, and I think the best dressed award should go to the Queen and the Princess Royal. Anne's hat game was strong this year.

I absolutely love that pumpkin-colored coat on the Queen! She is so cute. The brass buttons & jewelry are just the right highlights. Yeah, she gets my best-dressed, too. :)

Kate and Meghan both looked lovely. What a nice coat on Kate--Christmasy but not crazy. :D And Meghan's earth-toned outfit is understated and so flattering on her. Meghan is so fresh-faced--she looks younger than 36, imo.

I didnt care for the Queen's coat. I loved Meghan's - so classic. And the boots!

Also looking awesome: Sophie Wessex. It's not easy to wear that coat without appearing upholstered.

Oh, and apparently the Duchess of Cambridge and Meghan Markle were also there.

I didn't really like Anne's hat but the Queen looked fabulous. Her outfit was gorgeous! On another note, I read today that Andrew's daughters Eugenia & Beatrice have their noses out of joint with all the attention on Meghan. Apparently they think both Kate & especially Meghan are too common to be in the family.

Um. Was their Mum born Noble or Royal? Nope. Didn't think so.

I find it unlikely too. Sarah Ferguson was not even an official "Lady" or was she? I know Diana was.

Eugenie and Beatrice are not exactly the most fortunate looking amongst the bunch but whether that wold make their noses out of joint.......doubt it. They were never in the spotlight much anyway? Unless for a funny looking hat? They are just not that photogenic. Sorry.

What do their looks have to do with anything?

I think Eugenie is often very well-dressed, and Beatrice has some fun with her clothes (occasionally). But there is so much more to them than their clothes. Eugenie has dealt with scoliosis and Beatrice with dyslexia; they've done charity work related to these and other issues. They're both university graduates. Beatrice was the first member of the royal family to finish the London marathon. All of these things are more important than how photogenic they are.

Sarah didn't have any titles of her own, nor did her parents, but she is descended from (illegitimate) royalty according to Wiki:

Sarah once described her family as "country gentry with a bit of old money". She is descended from both the Stuart and Tudor houses. On her father's side, Sarah is a descendant of King Charles II of England via two of his illegitimate sons, Charles Lennox, 1st Duke of Richmond, and James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth. By her paternal great-great-grandfather Henry Brand, 2nd Viscount Hampden and her maternal great-grandfather Mervyn Wingfield, 8th Viscount Powerscourt, Sarah also descends from Lady Anne Palmer. Lady Anne was the eldest child of Royal mistress Barbara Villiers, Duchess of Cleveland; she was acknowledged by King Charles II and adopted the surname Fitzroy.

She has aristocratic ancestry, being the great great-granddaughter of the 6th Duke of Buccleuch, a great-granddaughter of the 8th Viscount Powerscourt and a direct descendant of James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Abercorn and of Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire, making her a distant cousin of her ex-husband Prince Andrew, Duke of York and also of Diana, Princess of Wales. Her paternal grandmother was Marian Montagu Douglas Scott, a first cousin of Lady Alice Montagu Douglas Scott, who married Prince Henry, Duke of Gloucester, an uncle of Queen Elizabeth II.

If your goal is to be highly covered by the tabloid press, photogenic tops all the things mentioned.

Being photogenic is different than being gorgeous or not. The camera just loves some people, and some don't fare as well.
Photogenic (esp of a person) having features, colouring, and a general facial appearance that look attractive in photographs

Sasha Cohen - photogenic. Julia Roberts (not traditionally pretty) but way photogenic. You are just drawn into them. If there is a group, your eye goes to them. My cousin's grand daughter.....not a pretty child at 2 1/2 but photogenic up the wazoo!

I didn't realize this was the Kardashians thread.
The assertion (that is likely false) is they are jealous of the attention on Meghan. She is an accomplished woman in her own right, but much of the attention is photos of her every move and outfit. If they were absolute stunners (and I personally think they are reasonably attractive, and always nicely put together), the press would follow them - they are princesses. But they aren't knock outs, so they seem to be too far from the thrown to sell papers. Harry is now quite far, but he wasn't always, and is obviously a hugely popular royal, so of course Meghan is getting oodles of attention

I don't get the sense that Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are trying to be tabloid fodder. They certainly know that it brought their parents no joy.

Being part of a royal family, or marrying into one, doesn't necessarily mean one wants to be in the public eye. Some of it goes with the job, as it were. But not everyone seeks it. The late Prince Johan-Friso of the Netherlands didn't hesitate to give up his place in the line of succession in order to marry Princess Mabel. Chris O'Neill - the husband of Princess Madeleine of Sweden - is a private citizen (though he does attend some functions). Marius, the son of Crown Princess Mette-Marit of Norway from a previous relationship, is now an adult and has asked not to be included in coverage and materials related to the royal family. And in the UK, I imagine that Prince Harry is quite happy not to have the pressure of being a future monarch, and being able to find his own way. It seems to me like Princess Beatrice and Princess Eugenie are doing the same.

And now for some fun, here are Norway's royal kids interviewing various other royals ;)

I would think pretty much anyone in Britain is descended of some form of royalty and/or nobility. Even I, with no British roots at all, can claim a third cousin who a fourth cousin of Prince Charles, both direct descendants of Queen Victoria :)

I read somewhere that 25% of residents of Britain are descendants of Edward III--that immigration has made the percentage go down over the years.

I think they managed to find some royal ancestors for both Kate and Meghan as well (Edward 111 for Kate and maybe Tudor for Meghan?) As you said, it probably covers most people in Britain if you look hard enough, and especially if you include illegitimate lines of descent (as for Sarah Ferguson).

Having no British ancestry myself, I can confidently say that I have none- or from any other Royal family (I have traced one of my lines back to a 14th century herring salesman, though!)

Zemgirl, you seem to be missing completely that I don't agree that they feel that way. Only why being photogenic would matter if they did.

Could someone in know say whether the questions and responses were in Norwegian, Swedish, Danish, or some combination thereof?
I'd love to know, too.

No, I understood what you meant. But l don't see any indication that the York princesses are interested in being chased by the tabloid press, so I'm not sure why this hypothetical discussion is needed. I recommend the Norwegian video instead!

I think your sources got their royals confused, as there's someone skulking around behind the queen in an attention-seeking shocking fuscia coat everyone is completely ignoring. :P

Obviously, the young royals haven't mastered Dutch yet, and it appears that Princess Beatrix never learned Norwegian. ;)

The kids are speaking Norwegian and Crown Princess Viktoria is answering in Swedish, Crown Prince Frederik in Danish. Really cute and fun, I can do a translation later.

Yes, I noticed that. I also noticed that next to the Queen, her outfit clashed & looked off-the-rack. I hated the black trim.
