I can well understand their desire to live in Canada. Not sure how you can just resign from the Royal Family but I guess it must be an option. Does Harry get automatic citizenship to Commonwealth countries?? Cant they just move wherever they want?

If the airport someone is going to is their final destination then 30 minutes are no big deal. But if it's not and someone misses their plane (and 30 minutes are easily enough of a delay to make you miss your plane), it can mean hours of delay, if not a delay until the next day (and if this is your well-earned vacation then it definitely sucks if you have to spend a night at the airport because some princess (or other VIP) couldn't get their act together) and depending on what one's plans are, it can snowball further. (For example, when you plan to board a cruise, you could miss your ship).

Sure, delays can happen anyway but if you're a VIP and get special treatment you should at least be considerate of those who are not and be at the airport early enough, so that if the plane is delayed, you're not the cause. It's common decency and shows respect of others, in my opinion.

Sorry, that was actually my point. If they are no longer going to be senior royals then, at their ages, they should fund their own lifestyle. I can see why Edward and Sophie and Anne are funded. They take on a huge number of engagements every year. I believe with Sophie and Edward they have security only when on official duties. At least I know that was discussed but not sure if it was implemented.

@starrynight Harry did 201 and Meghan did 83. Meghan’s number is understandable given she is still new and was on Mat leave. Remember also that each place Royals visit while on a tour or in a day is considered “an engagement” so it is possible to rack up a number of engagements in one day. Not a judgement, just explains how Prince Charles can do 521 engagements in 365 days.

well I still question whether it’s my country but they can stay 6 months. It wouldn’t be Cdn citizenship though and my understanding is that they want to be in the U.K. part of the time.

I agree, that's what I've been thinking. It would only take the Cambridge children being teenagers for the press to forget about Meghan and Harry. I'm sure there could have been ways of quietly stepping back Meghan and Harry without even mentioning it publicly. But I don't think they want to quietly slip off out of view to a country estate and only a handful of engagements.

And then that would also be controversial if it was seen that they weren't 'carrying their weight' and were still in receipt of funds from the public purse.

Maybe the ideal position would be to be a more minor royal like Prince Edward, who I saw photos of speaking at an event yesterday. He gets to do public engagements and support his causes, but the media aren't so much as interested. But then the flip side of the media not being interested is that he doesn't have as much influence.

I don't think they have a choice about taxes.

From BBC News:
As US citizens, Meghan - and her baby son - are liable to pay US taxes.

The US is one of only a few countries to charge tax based on citizenship and not residency. Other countries that tax non-resident citizens include Eritrea and Myanmar.

This means that even though the duke and duchess will be living at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor, the US government still expects Meghan to file tax returns with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) - the US tax authority.

Are royals entitled to be dual citizens?

For example, the Australian government requires members of parliament to renounce other citizenships and they are not eligible for parliament if they are dual citizens.

I don’t get the impression that Harry and Meghan want to get out of the public eye. They are talking about launching an international charity initiative (at least that is my impression.) My understanding is they don’t want the restraints or the oversight they have now as Senior Royals. Prince Edward actually did more engagements last year than Harry and Meghan combined so while he may not be as high profile, he certainly is pulling his weight.
 
FWIW I know someone (not a royal) who was born in the US and moved to Canada with his parents when he was six months old. He has never held a US passport or worked in the US, but the IRS still requires him to file a tax return every year. They threatened to garnish his Canadian income if he didn't :eek: So I don't doubt that the IRS will also expect Meghan to file a tax return - and I would imagine she still has a small US income from TV/movie royalties.

I think it would depend on where they were born. If they were born outside the UK, like Meghan, it would depend on the policies of the "other" country on dual citizenship. If they weren't born outside the UK, then I don't think they have any automatic right to citizenship in other Commonwealth countries, or any claim to citizenship anywhere else. The Queen doesn't have to have a passport because theoretically she is the one who grants UK citizens their passports, but she is a special case.
 
There is no way Harry would give up his citizenship. That would be a much worse scandal.
 
One thing I'm confused about is why Meghan made a beeline back to Canada. Surely she could have stayed a few days to hash things out with Prince Charles, William, and the Queen? Unless relationships are so broken they can't be in the same spaces together even to discuss life-changing events.

She went back for Archie. I think it’s actually wise as it’s Harry’s immediate family. She was there for the first part now he can deal with this.

Meghan should not be part of that discussion IMO. It's like when my MIL died & her kids were fighting over the estate. I did not make one comment on the situation, it wasn't my business. And of course she was going back to her baby.

What I can't believe is we're still talking about that 30 min delay. None of us know if that was Meghan's fault & if it was, so damn what? It's not the end of the world. I had a plane held for me coming back from New York City. The security people called the gate & told them we were coming, actually running thru the airport. BTW I'm not a celebrity or a royal.

Nailed it, taf2002. On both fronts. Meghan could very possibly be giving Harry and his family space respectfully, keeping it focused on them.

And this 30 minute delay being a thing at all, let alone STILL, is honestly ridiculous. Harry is finally making the exit he's low-key openly wanted from the business of the British Royal Family, and you're talking about a late flight? There are so many things that could be at play-- maybe the Queen herself wanted Meghan on this flight, ASAP-- would everyone still be so aghast if that were the case?

There's enough legitimate muck to go around, including with Meghan & Harry. Getting caught up on really stupidly overall small things like this is purely petty. It was 30 MINUTES! It wasn't even an hour!!! From a major international airport! Isn't there some ages-old skating debate you can resurrect instead or something? Teach the new generation about the Kwan vs. Lipinski wars, Russian drama of the '90s, whatever?

Isn't she currently also being paid as as royal and doesn't it affect her (financial) future as well?

If you're lucky, that happens. But it's the exception to the rule as delays cost airlines a nice chunk of money (€1,000-€1,700 per minute in Frankfurt).

If someone misses their flight, they miss their flight. What difference does it make if it's by 30 minutes or an hour?

And it's not about the delay itself. If she was the cause for the delay, it's the attitude that bothers me. If you get preferential treatment, you can at least have the curtesy to be on time. And that goes for everyone who travels like she does.

So? As I said, Heathrow is known for its delays but you make it sound like overseas flights are delayed from every major airport all the time. They're not. Delays cost money, so airlines actually are interested in keeping their flights on time.

Every flight I have taken in the past 2 years has left the gate 20-30 minutes after the time they said we would and every single one has landed on time or even early.

Until we know that the flight was late on the other end and enough to make people miss flights (so 5-15 minutes wouldn't do it) or we learn that it was late because Meghan was extremely thoughtless/inconsiderate, harping on it just makes it look like people are working to find things to criticize her for.
 
What we really need is for the BFR to issue a detailed statement outlining exactly how everything is going to work going forward for H&M. We require details, graphs, spreadsheets, witness statements, EVERYTHING. Then we can study it all and argue why none of it will work and how unfair it will all be to George’s yet unborn children.

We need more information darn it.

I keep trying to come up with a joke about how time evolves your opinion, and I've learned to wholeheartedly agree.

I cannot wait for more international royal tiaras to look at. From anywhere. Or skating, that would be pretty great.

I was not speaking about Meghan. I was speaking about the Duchy of Cornwall. As discussed in subsequent posts. The Duchy of Cornwall has no tax liability in the US.
