RIP HM Queen Elizabeth II

It's not really surprising but still shocking. An era ends - Churchill once said about young Elizabeth: "This country is so lucky." (At least this is what I read.)

Is Charles now automatically king or does it take an anouncement or the crowning ceremony?

I'm sorry for the family. Not a fan of monarchy, and this family in particular seems to have a lot of dysfunction. Hope they can get it together for the next chapter.

Automatic. The coronation will be months from now.

She wasn't born to the crown, but she took it and all the weight on her shoulders and did what she had to do. Many of us could learn a lesson.

I feel for Charles. His life just got a lot harder.
I think Charles has already been doing a lot of her duties.

RIP to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II. What a life she led and what history she saw and made. The Queen certainly did devote her entire life to service, her country and the commonwealth. We will not see anyone of her like again.

I'm so sad.

There will be a huge, huge, huge funeral and yes a swearing in (not sure that’s the right word).

Oh…what sad news! 😢 One of the great public figures through my lifetime.

May Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II, Rest In Peace.

p.s. Among many changes, the gold-embroidered letters on the red velvet curtain of the Royal Opera House in London will change from “ER” to “CR”!

From the BBC website:

"In the first 24 hours or so after his mother's death, Charles will be officially proclaimed King. This happens at St James's Palace in London, in front of a ceremonial body known as the Accession Council.

This is made up of members of the Privy Council - a group of senior MPs, past and present, and peers - as well as some senior civil servants, Commonwealth high commissioners, and the Lord Mayor of London."

Is there an Accession Council? I remember the one for King George VI in The King's Speech movie.

Also, when will William become the Prince of Wales?

The proclamation will come tomorrow, and the coronation in months, but he became king the moment her heart stopped. The press release announcing her death referred to him as the King.

Notably, William does not automatically become Prince of Wales. That title has to be given separately by the sovereign.
