Thanks for the update @Gerry and @Lee. You are so correct that often the staff (at least the nurse and therapists, the doctors do when follow-up appointments happen) don't see the work of the miracles/hard work.

I remember very clearly the little boy who had bilateral brain hemorrhages who woke up after nearly a year in a coma - when his parents brought him back to see us, how we all cried and hugged each other, his parents and Billy. The hospital staff - from the nurses to the housekeeping staff will love to see you!

In a world of turmoil, your good news is a welcomed break. Hugs to all of you.

And, from anecdotal, maybe then it would be measured.
Yes... though probably by a different type of doctor-researcher. Maybe physiatrists specializing in brain injuries?

I was really thinking more of what the families are told in that scary first period. The truth is, the ICU doctors are not responsible for the long-term recovery process and don't know much about it. Especially since it varies vastly from patient to patient. So arbitrary factoids like the 18-month thing, that might discourage patients and families from continuing to seek improvement, aren't especially helpful IMO. And then there are things they could say to prepare the family but don't.... But I don't mean to be ungrateful. I am as thankful to the doctors and staff at Roosevelt as @Gerry is to those at wherever Lee is. One of these days I will drag my hubby in to display his recovery and thank them whether he wants to or not!

Wonderful news @Gerry & @Really, I know it's baby steps with brain injuries but with my dad he continued to make progress right up to the day he died (not from his brain injury). Quite amazing how her brain will make new pathways, my dads taste in food even changed. He also became much more aware of his senses, especially his hearing. Occupational therapists were the best helping with the aphasia. Continued good luck on your healing journey

Such good news @Gerry - what a relief to have Lee just two minutes from home :cheer2: The care she has received from yourself and the medical teams has been phenomenal and this is such a big step. I'm so happy for you all. I agree with @Asli that this surely is the good news thread we need :)
